A sci-fi/thriller story centered on a special-ops team that is dispatched to fight supernatural beings.
Civil Unrest in the European country of Moldova has US forces engaging the insurgents however there is a new threat who has decided both are their enemy. This new threat resides in an alternative spectrum that makes them invisible to the naked eye and instant death to anyone confronting them. Locals believe they are Spirits of War but others believe they are superior arms technology fabricated by the Moldova government..
Spectral is an eclectic film that borrows heavily from a variety of genres of entertainment.

Perhaps, the most obvious for gamers, like myself, are the Call of Duty military action games. The high tech mix of contemporary and visionary future weapons, and military equipment is very familiar. As is the premise, of a special forces unit in a global trouble spot, fighting against a dystopian dictatorial government.

That said, there's a lot more going on here than a cinematic reproduction of computer games. The sci fi/horror elements found in this film are reminiscent of any number of films you care to name. For me, perhaps the most obvious was the Aliens trilogy. The heavy vehicles heading into unknown territory with well armed confident troops. A scenario that quickly turns bad and heads out of control, for me, recalls Aliens 2.

The spectral/ghostly elements of the film brought to mind titles including Poltergeists, Outpost, Raiders of the Lost Arc and The Ring (not to mention many many, other films too numerous to mention).

The big question is, does this creative mix work? The answer, for me, is a resounding "yes". This is an inherently watchable film. Its stuffed full of action but more than that, the story its built upon, is actually quite intriguing in a Frankenstein-ian sort of way. With a now familiar message on the ethics and pitfalls of scientific endeavor.

Its not easy to take so many elements and use them to craft a film yet Spectral not only manages this feat, it does so with polish and a certain gritty/creepy style. Eight out of ten from me.
Spectral has had a bumpy ride on its way to being released, due to Universal Pictures' lack of faith in the bankable cast, but thankfully Netflix finished the movie and released it in all it's visually-satisfying glory. The story: when soldiers start dying in a war-torn European city after the downfall of a totalitarian regime, the lead engineer of equipment used by the Special Forces teams is brought in to "clarify" what his goggles are picking up, and they soon find themselves in the midst of something far more terrifying than an insurgency.

For director Nic Mathieu's directorial debut, this one hell of a solid entry, looking like a slick cross between Ridley Scott and Michael Bay. The script is never cheesy or over-the-top, but straight-forward all the way through. There are no subplots, and there is no romance. Once the action starts, it doesn't let up, not even a little. The cast is all around solid, with James Badge Dale being a fantastic lead as the engineer, Clyne. The supporting cast (Max Martini, Bruce Greenwood, Emily Mortimer) fill there roles perfectly, and Martini even steals a couple moments in the third act, one of which is truly awesome to say the least. The production values and visuals are incredible, and never look just like CG. For a movie that was filmed a couple years ago, this could be an Oscar- contender for Best Visual Effects and Production Design. Even the score is superb, coming from acclaimed Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL (Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool, Black Mass). The only negative i can think of is the editing. The transition between the second and third acts is a little sloppy, as the dialogue, character movement and filming becomes uneven and choppy, happily just for a short bit.

Spectral is a surprise hit for Netflix, and definitely a strong entry in their collection of Originals. Honestly, this could have been successful in theaters, just not the scale of blockbuster Universal was probably hoping for. Still, a must-watch action- thriller that's as entertaining as it is interesting.
