An enema is the injection of a liquid into the lower bowel via the anus . After injection, the liquid is held for as long as possible, (usually no more than a few minutes), before it is expelled.

In so-called dry enemas, a sterile lubricant (such as glycerin or KY Jelly) is inserted instead of water. The usual amount of lubricant applied is about 2 tsp (10 cc), and can be applied with a suitable type of syringe. It will result in a bowel movement in 30 minutes or less, and the movement will be produced in a compact body, rather than in the more copious liquid form produced by a wet enema. A further advantage of this technique for sexual hygiene is that any slight remaining traces of fecal material will - due to the presence of the lubricant - tend to adhere to the wall of the rectum rather than to any foreign object which may subsequently be inserted.
