I had written a ton of stories with strict sexy young moms who end up adopting and raising their cute lil troublemaker boys with plenty of corporal punishments along the way. Most of these are standalone stories with a lot of spankings but also may contain other kinks like breastfeeding, age regression, pegging (in cases of the boy being of age). Children were not the only victims of corporal punishment. Wives were often whipped by their husbands; the "right" to do so dates all the way to 1800 BC in the Code of Hammurabi. EASTON, MD. -- What rotten luck. Just as Michael L. Pullen was about to make partner in one of the most prestigious law firms on Maryland's Eastern Shore, the stories about his boss were getting stranger and stranger.
Could it be? Was it possible that George Joseph Goldsborough Jr., scion of one of the state's mighty founding families, whose forebears include a Colonial governor, a congressman and a delegate to the Continental Congress, harassed women in the oddest way: by spanking them?
The spanking stories were so old (some dating back to the 1960s) and so widely believed that by 1980 smart alecks in Talbot County's small legal community were privately referring to the firm of Goldsborough, Franch & Collett as "Spanky and His Gang."
But suddenly, on the eve of Pullen's ascendancy to partner, the rumors had metamorphosed into "a problem," as Goldsborough's colleagues somberly put it that day in 1982.
They told him they had just received an angry phone call from the boyfriend of one of Goldsborough's clients. The man alleged that Goldsborough had twice spanked her, once in her home and once in his office.
The partners had had enough. They were going to eject Goldsborough and set up their own firm, and they wanted Pullen to join them.
Pullen, a cautious man, decided to check one thing for himself:
"I had heard there was this book in his drawer, and I went in and looked. It was 'Spanking and the Single Girl,' " Pullen recalled. "That confirmed it for me. I closed the drawer, and I was out of there."
This is two stories. The first is about a lawyer accused of bizarre misconduct. The second is about how the allegations went uninvestigated for more than a decade as an insular legal community protected through its silence and inaction one of its most powerful members. Twice since the early 1980s, groups of partners have split acrimoniously with Goldsborough, largely because of his outrageous behavior toward female clients and female staffers, they now say. Easton is brimming with former Goldsborough partners who heard the stories.
"He wouldn't pick on big, strong, brave secretaries. It was the weak ones, or the woman who needs help -- 'Please, my man has left me!' " said an Easton-based former partner, who left about the time Pullen did.
One woman says Goldsborough repeatedly grabbed her and tried to touch her; another says he suddenly began kissing her while she tearfully explained her marital problems; a teenage secretary says he spanked her repeatedly, sometimes pulling down her pants, prompting her to seek psychological counseling after she left the job.
Yet for years no one reported the incidents to the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission. Or persuaded any of the women to file a complaint. Why?
"I feel really badly about how I acted under the circumstances -- to just sit back ..." said Pullen, who still practices in Easton. "It's a very tough question. There are all kinds of moral implications... ."
Many others in Easton and across the state are pondering those same tough questions, now that the 67-year-old Goldsborough is facing unprecedented misconduct allegations.
The Attorney Grievance Commission charges, in a civil suit scheduled to be heard today and tomorrow in Wicomico County Circuit Court, that in separate incidents over a nine-year period Goldsborough kissed one female client, spanked another and subjected a 17-year-old female secretary to repeated, sometimes bare-bottomed, spankings.
"You've been a bad girl," he told client Catharine K. Sweitzer as he pulled her over his knee, according to the 1989 complaint she filed that led to the charges. The incident happened in 1979, she says.
