MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WZTV/CNN) — A Tennessee man is facing child abuse charges after hitting his son.
Video from a surveillance camera shows just how brutal the beating was.
Nia Snow said it started off as a typical night.
Her three children, including six-year-old Damian, were playing outside.
That’s when Damian’s father, Randy Dickens, started spanking him for bad behavior in school.
“All of a sudden, his (Dickens’) whole body just started going into it,” Snow said. “He was drooling out of his mouth. He was putting so much effort into it.”
The video taken from a camera on the front porch shows Dickens aggressively hitting Damian, shoving him to the ground, even kicking him.
More surveillance footage shows this continuing into a playroom.
That’s when Snow secretly called 911, afraid to confront Dickens because she said he was carrying a gun.
“I tried to do things the right way and I did what the police told me to do and I didn’t want nobody getting shot,” she said. “And I knew that’s what would have happened. So I tried to be smart.”
Snow said watching her son get beaten was the most heartbreaking thing she’s ever experienced.
“The whole time it was happening, he was screaming my name. It’s very hard,” she said.
Snow said after the beating stopped, she persuaded Dickens to leave the home.
When Wilson County deputies arrived, she showed them the video.
Dickens turned himself in. He is charged with child abuse and neglect.
Snow said he since bonded out of jail with terms that he can’t go near her or Damian.
Still, she said they need to get away.
“This isn’t going to last forever. So, he goes to court in a few weeks. I just want to get them away,” she said.
The bruises, cuts and welts on Damian’s body from the beating are a reminder of when he was beaten by Snow’s ex-boyfriend at just two months old, resulting in 18 fractured bones.
Snow, herself said she’s a victim of physical abuse.
“Find that inner peace,” she said, encouraging other victims of physical abuse to speak up. “Stay humble and find the safest and quickest way out.”
Authorities also seized two rifles from the home.
Police notified the Department of Children’s Services of the situation.

A VIRAL video of a man spanking a child in public has sparked a debate about whether the punishment was too harsh.
The video shows a man, who many commenters believe is the child's grandfather, repeatedly smacking a young boy on the bottom.
He then tells a female child sitting next to the boy to, "Sit your a** down."
The video has been viewed millions of times after being shared on Twitter, Facebook and Reddit, and sparked much debate from commenters about the correct way to discipline children.
While many commenters said they were spanked when they were out of line as children and turned out fine, others said making children fear you is a poor way to parent.
"This is gross and anyone condoning it is disgusting as well," wrote one Twitter user who goes by the name Zach Hayes. "If you have to hit your kids to make them listen, you're the problem."
"That is far too much," wrote another who goes by Micah on Twitter. "Kids are learning and growing still. They're not full adults who understand everything. This kind of hitting is abuse."
Despite the fact that the child was hit multiple times, many people said that spanking is a necessary disciplining tactic sometimes.
Olympic hurdler James Carter even chimed in , replying to a re-posting of the video on Twitter.
"That's what my parents did to me and I made two Olympic teams and finals," Carter said.
Professional boxer Jamel Herring also commented on the video .
"Got my a** whooped as a kid... plus those whoopings in public not only embarrass you, it gets your act together," he wrote.
"All the people that are saying this is abuse probably disrespected their parents and lack discipline," added another user who goes by the name K.
"Compared to how I was whooped, this is light work."
Still many parents called the spanking "lazy parenting," "crossing the line" and the like.
Several also had a problem with the man choosing to discipline the young boy in public.
"Wow... hmmmmm I believe in spankings. I discipline my children with a occasional spank now n then," added another user who goes by the name Brandon on Twitter.
"That's how I was raised, my parents, grandparents, so on, and so on. I turned out fine and respectful to everyone. BUT, a spanking that bad with hand in public? I'd never do that."

For many parents, discipline comes in many forms, including spanking. As a child gets older, however, spanking sometimes becomes more difficult.
One Florida father decided that when his 17-year-old son was acting up again he would use his belt. After a few blows, however, the teen laughed at his father and the spanking .
The reaction from his dad was to put down the belt and grab something else. That decision landed him in jail.
The Pasco County Sheriff’s office received a complaint of child abuse and investigated Waren Gibson, 50, of Land O’ Lakes, Florida. Gibson admitted to officers that he not only spanked his son, but when the teen laughed, he also grabbed his Taser and used it on him. According to the arrest report, Gibson “used a cane Taser one time on the inside of the victim’s left leg.”
Gibson said neither form of punishment left a mark on the child, according to the report, and authorities said they “did not observe any injuries on the victim at this time.”
Gibson was arrested on Monday, May 20, 2019, charged with felony child abuse and taken to the Pasco County Jail. His son told police that “he did not have any marks from the belt or the Taser,” the according to the police report.

A mother who claims she was seduced by her 15-year-old son has avoided jail for having sexual relations with him.
The 50-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was told by a judge at Gloucester Crown Court that she had 'clearly breached her obligation as a mother.'
She pleaded guilty to three charges of sexual activity with her son but maintained that the boy initiated sexual activity and she just went along with what he wanted out of motherly love.
Prosecutor Stephen Dent said the woman spanked the boy with a paddle at his request and she dressed up in knickers, bra and boots as he wanted.
The 50-year-old woman, who cannot be named, was told by a judge at Gloucester Crown Court that she had 'clearly breached her obligation as a mother'
He said: 'He would wear a t-shirt, nothing else. This happened more than once, but less than six times,'
Simon Burch, representing the woman, said: 'He instigated and established the sexual offending.
'She had no enthusiasm for the conduct and was ashamed and contrite.'
Judge Ian Lawrie QC said: 'It does not absolve your client's responsibilities.
'She ignored the appropriate boundaries between mother and son.'
Mr Burch continued: 'Yes. Yes, she did.
'But she is vulnerable for a number of reasons. She is easily manipulated.
'In her previous, abusive, relationship, she was subject to physical violence and made to engage in sexual acts she did not want to.'
Referring to 'plaguing persevering messages' from her son, Mr Burch said: 'Not once had any of the ideas come from her. Not once did she encourage him.'
The judge at Gloucester Crown Court (pictured) imposed a 16 month jail term suspended for two years with a requirement to attend forty rehabilitation activity sessions
Mr Burch added that the woman had 'not one iota of enthusiasm,' for the sexual relationship with her son.
There was merely 'reluctant acquiescence,' on her part, he said.
He added: 'This was a mother struggling to bring up her son in an appropriate way and control him.'
She was someone who was 'bedevilled and plagued' by the boy's demands and she capitulated, he said.
'She should not be regarded as predatory,' Mr Burch argued.
'I regard her as weak and foolhardy.
'This is a case where she did not respect the boundary. She could have done but she did not.
'It is an unhappy combination of offences. She clearly breached her obligation as a mother.'
The judge said he viewed the chance of further offences as 'highly unlikely'.
'I think this is very much a creature of the moment and the time between the pair of them,' he said.
'I am cognisant of the unusual circumstances. Frankly, it was quite extraordinary combination of factors.'
Imposing a 16 month jail term suspended for two years with a requirement to attend forty rehabilitation activity sessions he told the woman: 'You've pleaded guilty to three offences of sexual activity with a child family member, that is your son.
'Whatever the prompt or dynamic, it is ultimately that you had a responsibility to your son.
'He was vulnerable,' the judge said.
'At age of 16 he was difficult. Threatening in his behaviour.
'There was persistence by him, and on one view pressure from him, to indulge in those sexual acts.
'That does not excuse, and can never excuse, that you failed as a mother to observe as a mother the appropriate boundaries.
'There is a greater need for you to exercise discipline and restraint. Not to acquiesce.'
'You have breached the obligation of a mother. Not just on one occasion, but a variety of occasions.
'But there is no prior sexual deviancy and a significant level of remorse.'
The court heard the woman had no previous convictions or cautions recorded against her.
The judge added 'Your appearance here will be hugely humiliating and embarrassing for you.
'On one level so be it, on another it is a harm that should be acknowledged.'
Alongside the suspended jail term, the judge ordered the woman to sign the sex offender register for ten years.
