Kindergarten and my first real spanking Growing up in the 1950’s was full of music in my house. My mom always had the radio on or her Hi Fi on playing records, you know the 45’s that were popular. We were always dancing to whatever music was playing. My first day of kindergarten was not something terrible. My Mom told me who my teacher was, told me to stand on her line, called me “Karen Ann”, snapped my picture and off I went into the classroom.
What I do recall was being all the way in the back of the classroom because my last name began with a “W”. There was no sitting next to your friend, it was all about sitting in alphabetical order. This was something I learned to despise over the years. I never was able to sit in the front of the room. Oh, how I wished my last name began with an “A” or a “B”. It seemed with everything we did in the classroom it had to do with alphabetical order. Teacher’s pet...who got to be the teacher’s pet first..who was the monitor, who erased the board...whatever the task was, it never seemed to make it to me..”W” .. I was always the last for everything ...even my birthday... My birthday was in the month of December , the last month of the year ....When it was time to celebrate my birthday my Mom baked cupcakes for the entire class...In those days Mom’s didn’t seem to worry who liked what flavor, or who was allergic to anything... When it was your birthday you felt pretty special on that day. That was until you remembered what was going to happen. There was the dreaded moment when Mrs. Wollen called you up to the front of the room to announce your birthday to the entire classroom. That part wasn’t so bad. The part that was dreaded was when she gave you the “birthday spanks” over her lap for “good luck”. Who ever heard of a spanking being for good luck. She called me up to the front of the room and I immediately started to worry. I had never been spanked before. I had witnessed other kids in the class getting their spanks for good luck and was horrified. I had a beautiful new dress on for my birthday and I was going to be spanked in front of the entire class. It was the worst experience in my life!! I was spanked five times and then once more for good luck!! I was so choked up with fear and was never more ashamed in my life. I just couldn’t understand the reason for being spanked. I thought getting spanked was when you were bad. I decided then and there I was never going to let anyone spank me again. When I met my Mom outside of school that day I remember telling her how much it hurt to be spanked in front of the class. I told her it wasn’t fun, the class laughed and my feelings felt very bad. I know my Mom knew I was sad that day and tried to cheer me up by hugging me and telling me I wasn’t spanked for being bad but I didn’t understand why my teacher spanked me.
I recall during all my school years never being scolded or spanked ever again. I guess my kindergarten teacher left more than an impression on my butt, she must have left an impression right down to my soul.
Wow, that's a vivid memory indeed. I don't remember spankings from any teachers but certainly from fun-loving classmates. From one Karen Ann in the fifties to another, aren't you glad some things have changed?

Hi Karen, I wonder if all the teachers did this..or your particular teacher took some private glee out of embarrassing young kids...or maybe a fetish? Back then they didn't know much about those things. I too would NOT have liked that at all. I can SO relate to always having to sit at the back. My last name was Sanquist..so I was right there with you W folks.
Love the part about the house filled with music...............getting spanked for good luck in front of the class on your birthday.........not so much! I think the "W" for Mrs. Wollen really stood for "weird"!
Oh my, you poor little thing, that mean ol teacher, how dare her call a little girl up on her first day of School and spank her like that in front of everyone, even if it was your birthday. It's especially not suppose to hurt! That even hurt my feelings
WOW... A teacher certainly couldn't get away with that crazy behavior these days! Times have changed a lot since then, but Even back then, I don't think that Spanking for luck was acceptable behavior.... Especially from a teacher.

No way that would have happened when I was a kid! I remember my Mom telling my principal, "No one spanks my children but me." She went against the grain for the day, but she was dead right! I'm with you -- who spanks a kid for their birthday?
Karen I can relate, I did not like getting hit for no good reason.
I sure hope they don't set up the classes in alphabetical order these days, that is not a fair system.

As a boy in the second grade in the 1940s, I went through the same traumatic birthday spanking experience as you, giving a lifetime of dubious memories (including my little-boy-eroticism about seeing little girls spanked...) Some may have thought it was all in fun, but not me! In addition, I didn't just dread the idea on the day itself, but for almost two whole months leading up to my turn in late October. In perspective, of course, all that was nothing compared to the real cruelties sufffered by so many children elsewhere. But as you say, definitely a soul-impression!

Five decades of research made its debut in a study published in the April 2016 issue of the Journal of Family Psychology . The verdict: The more you spank your children, the more likely they are to defy you and to develop issues including anti-social behavior and cognitive difficulties.
The study, out of The University of Austin and the University of Michigan, analyzed 50 years of research involving 160,927 children, following many of them to adulthood.
"Spanking increases the likelihood of a wide variety of undesired outcomes for children," says co-author and University of Michigan associate professor Andrew Grogan-Kaylor. "Spanking thus does the opposite of what parents usually want it to do."
That finding mirrors research published earlier this year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
At the same time, however, the ruling also invoked a broader context, finding that spanking as a form of corporal punishment “remains firmly woven into our nation’s social fabric.”
A large majority of Americans believe it is “sometimes appropriate” for parents to spank their children , according to a 2013 Harris Poll , and the percentage of those who think a child sometimes needs a “good, hard spanking” is also high . Although the trend of using corporal punishment for discipline has waned over the years, especially as more research shows the adverse effects of spanking on children , it continues on.
Americans are willing to tolerate a minimal level of corporal punishment if it’s intended to discipline, not cause pain. But do parents across the country have a legal right to use force against a child?
Each state has its own definition of what is acceptable, and some states’ laws are more vague than others. For instance, Utah state law says that inflicting “serious physical injury” on a child is against the law, but the “reasonable discipline of minors” is an acceptable defense. Laws in Washington state, on the other hand, are more specific; they permit “reasonable and moderate” force against a child yet specifically outlaw throwing, kicking, burning or cutting a child, shaking a child under 3, interfering with breathing, threatening with a deadly weapon and more.
The word that appears over and over again in states’ statutes is “reasonable,” a standard that requires interpretation. That lack of clarity affords state attorneys some discretion in deciding which cases to prosecute.
The Gunderson National Child Protection Training Center has collected state statutes relevant to spanking so you can see exactly where your state stands on the issue.
Internationally, 43 countries ban spanking with Canada on the way to joining the list, as of earlier this year.
However, it’s better to refrain altogether from disciplining any child who is not your own. Even if you are unlikely to face a criminal charge, you could possibly face a civil suit from the child’s parents or guardians.
In 19 states, yes. The other 31 states have outlawed corporal punishment in the classroom for uses other than maintaining a safe environment. The amount of force an educator may use against a child in the remaining 19 states varies considerably, from allowing “reasonable and necessary” force to causing “no physical injury” to using “non-deadly force.”
It’s not uncommon for teachers to be arrested for child abuse. In March 2015, a Los Angeles teacher was charged with child abuse for putting a plastic bag over a child’s head. And in May 2015, a Florida teacher was charged with aggravated abuse for digging his fingernails into a child’s hand and calf.
Being convicted of child abuse could lead to jail time, loss of custody of the child, a heavy fine, and more. Because the consequences can be severe, it’s best not to test the limits of your state’s laws by using corporal punishment on any child, even your own. The line between “reasonable force” and “abuse” isn’t quantitative; it can only be evaluated in the eyes of the state prosecutor. As the controversy over football player Adrian Peterson shows, even if a parent believes his or her method of discipline is acceptable, the state may not agree (your spouse might not either; disagreements around parenting are a major cause of divorce).
