They've been hailed as wonder garments that can give women the hourglass figures of their dreams - but until recently, they've come come with a catch.
However, ladies wearing Spanx have had to refuse liquids and cross their legs to avoid having to go to the loo for fear of embarrassment.
However, now the brand has finally provided a solution: a 'double gusset' which it describes on its website as providing 'ease when nature calls'. In other words, it has a pee hole.
But does it really work? Three women put it to the test with hilarious results - watch how they got on.
Spanx fan Kim Kardashian admitted that she struggled with the brand's 'crotchless' offerings and had even had a few accidents while squeezed into them.
She confessed to Love magazine: 'I always pee all over my Spanx. It's a disaster. They aren't crotchless enough!'
So, could our FEMAIL writers fare better wearing the life-saving designs?
Emily holds open the Spanx pee hole which the three Femail writers tested
Three brave FEMAIL writers, including Talya (pictured) try the 'double gusset' Spanx, designed so that the wearer is able to go the bathroom while wearing them
If successful the feature would surely come in handy in an all-in-one bodysuit, so the wearer - Emily (left) and Talya (right) - doesn't have to remove any items of clothing in order to relieve themselves
Our guinea pigs pulled on their £72 My Day Open Bust Bodysuits and put them to the ultimate test.
Their verdict? It seems Kim's predicament is a common one.
One of our testers Talya admitted: 'I definitely peed on myself.'
Lisa added: 'The first time you go while wearing the Spanx feels very odd. But once you get over that it’s fine. You do need to be careful though, one false move and you’ve peed on your underwear'.
Kim Kardashian has admitted: 'I always pee all over my Spanx, it’s a disaster. They aren’t crotchless enough'
Lisa says that she was 'a bit scared' as she prepared to test the waist cinching and bottom-smoothing undies
Only one of them managed to get away, literally, untainted by the experience.
Emily said: 'It was harder to go to toilet in the Spanx than I thought as the act of holding the gusset open really puts you off the task at hand.
'However, the gusset is big enough to provide enough space to do your business - I don't see why Kim Kardashian has such a problem, unless she is often caught short.'

Spandex , Lycra , or elastane is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity . It is a polyether - polyurea copolymer that was invented in 1958 by chemist Joseph Shivers at DuPont 's Benger Laboratory in Waynesboro, Virginia , US. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

The generic name "spandex", which is an anagram of the word "expands", [6] is the preferred name in North America . In continental Europe , it is referred to by variants of "elastane", including élasthanne (France), Elastan (Germany, Sweden), elastano (Spain), elastam (Italy), and elastaan (Netherlands); and in the UK, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and Israel, it is primarily known as "Lycra".

Brand names for spandex include Lycra (made by the Lycra Company, previously a division of DuPont Textiles and Interiors ), Elaspan (The Lycra Company), Acepora ( Taekwang Group ), Creora ( Hyosung ), INVIYA ( Indorama Corporation ), ROICA and Dorlastan ( Asahi Kasei ), Linel (Fillattice), [7] and ESPA ( Toyobo ).

In the post-World War II era, DuPont Textiles Fibers Department , formed in 1952, became the most profitable division of DuPont, dominating the synthetic fiber market worldwide. [8] At this time, women began to emerge as a significant group of consumers because of their need for underwear and hosiery . [8] After conducting market research to find out what women wanted from textiles, DuPont began developing fibers to meet such needs—including a better fiber for women's girdles , which were commonly made of rubber at the time.

By the 1930s, DuPont became interested in developing a synthetic elastic fiber. DuPont made its first breakthrough in the early 1950s when chemist Joseph C. Shivers used an intermediate substance to modify Dacron polyester, producing a stretchy fiber that could withstand high temperatures. [9] Determined to find a fiber to replace rubber in garments, after nearly a decade of research, Shivers perfected the fiber in 1958 at DuPont 's Benger Laboratory in Waynesboro, Virginia . [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] Moreover, the nature of spandex allowed it to be incorporated into other garments besides girdles and undergarments .

To distinguish its brand of spandex fiber, DuPont chose the trade name Lycra (originally called Fiber K ). [10] DuPont launched an extensive publicity campaign for its Lycra brand, taking advertisements and full-page ads in top women's magazines such as Vogue , Glamour , Harper's Bazaar , Mademoiselle , McCall's , Ladies' Home Journal , and Good Housekeeping . [8] Audrey Hepburn helped catapult the brand on and off-screen during this time; models and actresses like Joan Collins and Ann-Margret followed Hepburn's aesthetic by posing in Lycra clothing for photo shoots and magazine covers. [11]

By the mid-1970s, with the emergence of the women's liberation movement , girdle sales began to drop as they came to be associated with anti-independence and emblematic of an era that was quickly passing away. [8] In response, DuPont reimagined Lycra as the aerobic fitness movement emerged in the 1970s. [8] The association of Lycra with fitness had been established at the 1968 Winter Olympic Games , when the French ski team wore Lycra garments to compete. [12] This popularized the brand as essential athletic wear because of its flexible and lightweight material. The fiber came to be especially popular in mid-thigh-length shorts worn by cyclists. [12]

By the 1980s, the fitness trend had reached its height in popularity and fashionistas began wearing shorts on the street. [13] Spandex proved such a popular fiber in the garment industry that, by 1987, DuPont had trouble meeting worldwide demand. In the 1990s a variety of other items made with spandex proved popular, including a successful line of body-shaping foundation garments sold under the trade name Bodyslimmers . As the decade progressed, shirts, pants, dresses, and even shoes were being made with spandex blends, and mass-market retailers like Banana Republic were even using it for menswear. [13]

In 2014, it was noted that most clothes containing spandex end up as non-recyclable waste once they have been worn out, because fabric blends containing spandex are difficult to recycle. [14] This contributes to the pollution of the environment.

Spandex fibers are produced in four ways: melt extrusion , reaction spinning , solution dry spinning , and solution wet spinning . All of these methods include the initial step of reacting monomers to produce a pre polymer . Once the prepolymer is formed, it is reacted further in various ways and drawn out to make the fibers.

The solution dry spinning method is used to produce over 94.5% of the world's spandex fibers. [15] The process has five steps:

The exceptional elasticity of spandex fibers increases the clothing's pressure comfort , enhancing the ease of body movements. Pressure comfort is the response towards clothing by the human body's pressure receptors ( mechanoreceptors present in skin sensory cells). The sensation response is affected mainly by the stretch, snug, loose, heavy, lightweight, soft, and stiff structure of the material. [16]

The elasticity and strength (stretching up to five times its length) of spandex has been incorporated into a wide range of garments, especially in skin-tight garments . A benefit of spandex is its significant strength and elasticity and its ability to return to the original shape after stretching and faster drying than ordinary fabrics. For clothing, spandex is usually mixed with cotton or polyester , and accounts for a small percentage of the final fabric, which therefore retains most of the look and feel of the other fibers. An estimated 80% of clothing sold in the United States contained spandex in 2010. [17]

Thanks for sticking with us for a full year.
Thanks for sticking with us for 2 years.

Seriously, how is this accomplished? I've got a pair that I'm planning to wear, and they've got the hole and everything, but HOW? I picture myself making a huge mess. Any tips on how to do this? TIA!

Yeah, it's strapless. I thought of doing that! If that works it'd definitely be easier!

My suggestion is to go before you know you have to go. Don't wait until the last moment or you'll be sorry. If there's a pot nearby, or a lull in the conversation, take the opportunity and make a stop. Wish I'd done this! Don't wait until you're desperate. Also, first get the TP ready and in your hand. Then use your hands to pull apart the Spanx at the opening and hold it open while going. Wash your hands really well, of course.
I don't understand why one would wear spanks instead of a waistnipper if you're concerned about peeing in the wedding dress.

Yeah, the thigh-chaffing was the main reason I wanted the ones with legs. I wasn't planning on getting them, because I heard about Body Glide on here, and it's AWESOME. I was perfectly content sticking with that. But when I finally found a bra, it definitely needed the spanx to help smooth everything out a bit. And with 8 days left, I'm kinda out of shopping time

Or a highwaisted slip would also work for most dresses.
Honestly, unless you need the top of your thighs "slimmed", there is no reason to wear spanx with a wedding dress. And when you elminate the crotch of the spanks, you eliminate the peeing issue.
