Sister – A term used by sorority members in reference to one another . Sorority – The name that applies to female chapters and is characterized by a ritual, a pin, and a strong bond of friendship.
A Little Sister or a Little is a new member of a sorority chapter who is paired with an initiated Sister . She is mentored by her Big Sister or Big throughout her sorority life, college experience, and post-college life.
Fraterity little sisters, sometimes called “sweethearts,” are undergraduate . women affiliated with a men’s social fraternity ; they typically serve the. fraternity in a “hostess” or “booster” capacity. Fraternity men select women. to be little sisters on the basis of beauty and sociability, following a rush.
Prophyte: An older member of an NPHC or cultural-based organization . A neophyte becomes a prophyte after one year or when another line is initiated.
If you think about it, the amount of “g”s we can add before the word “big” can seem endless. A g-big, or grand big, is what we call our “big’s big.” So in a typical Greek family, you will have a little, a big, a g-big and sometimes even a g-g-big.
Essentially, if a Big has two Littles , they are considered Twins. If she has three, Triplets. Four, Quadruplets, and so forth. Twins are more common than Triplets and Twins are way more common than Quadruplets.
A twin can be from a different pledge class. Let’s say your Big decides to also take a Little in the Spring (because your sorority went through Informal Recruitment). This new member is your twin. Basically if the Big has two Littles, then they are twins .
Sweethearts are women chosen by the brothers, women who have “been around (the fraternity), who have hung out a lot ,” said John Gilbert, a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. They serve as party guests, public relations advocates, friends to the brothers and various other capacities.
As nouns the difference between sisterhood and sorority is that sisterhood is the state, or kinship of being sisters while sorority is a group of girls or women associated for a common purpose; a sisterhood .
Members of fraternities and sororities address members of the same organization as “brother” (in the case of fraternities) or “sister” (in the case of sororities) .
Sands: NPHC term referring to a member that crossed/was initiated the same semester and year as yourself — though they do not have to belong to the same organization . Comes from the phrase “cross the burning sands” which means to cross over (become initiated) into full membership.
Ace: The first person in an intake class for a culturally-based fraternity or sorority . ( Usually organized shortest to tallest) Active: An initiated fraternity or sorority member who is affiliated with the campus chapter.
Dirty rushing is when a Greek chapter specifically tells a PNM that if they want that chapter, it’s theirs . It can also include drinking/partying with PNMs and speaking to a PNM during the ‘silent period’ – the period after final party but before bid day where members of Greek Life are forbidden to speak to PNMs.
Big/Little Reveal Each big is wrapped in wrapping paper and has on a pair of socks that matches a pair of socks they have given their little to wear! The little finds the person with their matching socks and sits in front of them and then everyone unwraps their big at the same time!
One of these new terms being a “big sister” or often just shortened to a “big.” A big sister is an initiated sorority woman who acts as a mentor to you . All new members of a sorority are matched with their big during the new member period, which takes place before initiation.
Here are some suggestions on how to get to know your new sorority big:
Big/Little Reveal!! So for those who know nothing about Greek Life (don’t worry, that was me a year ago) every sorority has Bigs and Littles. Basically, every new member is a Little and gets a Big, who is someone a year older than them to show them the ropes and hang with a ton .
At the core, a Big Little relationship is a mentorship . The Big’s purpose is to guide her new little through initiation, college life, sorority life, and life after college. The Little, in return, is to learn all she can from her Big so she can pass it on to her own future Little(s) or new members in the sorority.
10 Things All Good Sorority Bigs Do
The Pike Dream Girl is any woman from a sorority who best represents and unselfishly supports the fraternity . Each year a new Dream Girl is chosen. Active brothers vote several weeks before the formal function on which sorority girl will win the coveted title.
Each year, the undergraduate brothers vote for the woman who best represents our Chapter of Kappa Sigma . During our Sweetheart Formal in the Spring, the Kappa Sigma Sweetheart for the following year is announced.
