My friends and I call it pepper. That indiscernible length of armpit hair like stubble. It’s sharp and pointy and, when no one is looking, kind of fun to touch. More result than intention for me, pepper has always popped up between showers until very recently, when I put down the razor and tried the hard stuff. I️ first got turned onto the idea of waxing my underarms via a colleague who cited Manhattan’s European Wax Center for being affordable, sanitary, and available for appointments made on a whim. After four sessions stretching from the end of August through September, I️ was hooked. It took me a moment to get past the initial pain—nobody tells you how, after spending 17 years shaving every other day with a throwaway pink Gillette razor, insanely tortuous it is to wax your underarms.
Still, it was worth it, I️ told myself, because I️ had never seen my skin so perfectly bare. There was no pepper and definitely no five-o’clock shade. My underarms were, for the very first time, ready for their close-up. That was, until an ingrown hair showed up, then a second, and then a third. My wax technician Martha suggested a serum-and-exfoliate routine. But emotionally, I️ just wasn’t up for more maintenance in the name of the armpit.
Then, after a particularly crazy workweek, I missed one wax appointment, followed by another. And before I knew it, I had consciously uncoupled from all things hair removal. And why not? A new generation of women are jumping on board the no-shave movement and even well established icons such as Julia Roberts and Madonna have at one point hopped on the pro-hair wagon, too.
Philosophical solidarity is one thing—but in practice, being okay with hair under there took time. At first, there was only a dash of pepper—slightly pathetic, barely perceptible, but very manageable. A week later, there was just enough growth to get by during Hasta Uttanasana pose without feeling too self-conscious in yoga, though I dodged some side-eye (whether imagined or real) and bowed out of a post-namaste convo to dash to the changing room and throw on my coat. Two weeks and one appearance in a red Nili Lotan slip dress for a wedding later, and I really felt like I was living on the edge—which was sort of thrilling until “Shout,” the song where you throw your hands up, came on and, feeling suddenly uncomfortable, I took my seat.
But alone, in the confines of my own apartment, I was intrigued, even proud, when lifting up my arms for my husband. “It’s cool,” he’d say, but I️ could tell he wasn’t invested one way or the other in my hard work (or lack thereof). So I sent a selfie to my best friend, Lili, and her little sister Simona, the sibling duo who first introduced me to the term pepper with the caption: “Guys, I have pepper that would get me arrested in certain parts of the country, but I kind of love it.” They responded immediately. “I loooooooove it,” wrote Simona. “So impressed by your pepp,” followed Lili. It felt invigorating to have hair wherever I wanted, and to know that my fellow rebel hearts approved.
Now, a full month in, the color is much darker than the hair on my head, and the texture is thin and straight. It’s more fluttery (whiskery?) than peppery, but it definitely brings a certain spice to, say, a conservative sleeveless cap-sleeved Protagonist top. Perhaps it’s a subtle reminder of the more grounded side of me. What I know for certain is that it allows for more important things to be top of mind—like, you know, the state of our country—because it requires exactly zero fuss.
