Sony's MDR 7520 is something of an "anti-Beats" headphone that fashionistas will shun, but its real strength is its neutrality . Just as I started working on this review, I met with Naotaka Tsunoda, one of the designers of the Sony MDR 7520 , in NYC .
This is a review of the Sony MDR 7520 , which I will compare to my Sony MDR 1R . Looks Well no contest, if you are going in for a beauty contest, the 1R wins hands down . It is just a wonderful looking headphone compared to the 7520 . Which is just utilitarian in design .
As Sony's highest level of professional headphone, the 7520 is designed for critical listening applications . These headphones utilize ultra wideband 50mm HD driver units incorporating liquid crystal polymer film diaphragms . That's why the listener gets high power handling capability with great durability and unparalleled sound quality .
The Sony MDR- 7520 , like most closed back over-ears, are not the most breathable headphones and will still make you ears make your ears fairly warm during long listening sessions . Their closed-back over-ear design prevents a good amount of airflow so they won't be suitable for exercising or working out but should be okay for more casual listening .
Sony continue to offer the 7509 but have launched two new models in the range, the less expensive MDR 7510, and the pricier MDR 7520 , which is reviewed here . Sony say the 7520 is a completely new model, but I expected it to at least be similar to the MDR 7509, perhaps sharing a 'family' sound, but with a few subtle improvements .
My brand new Sony 7520 headphones fell apart after carefully using them only about 20 times over a couple of months . Amazon put me in touch with Sony who told me the warranty did not cover any breakages or physical defects and that Sony would not honor their "warranty" on any such defective product .

MDR-Z1000 .That was something I always assumed, but a belief I had banished for me in a head-to-head comparison of the two with Sony's Naotaka "Nao" Tsunoda (Nao was the lead engineer for these products) .
