An 11-year-old Auckland boy fathered a child after having sex with a friend's 36-year-old mother.
Contact between the boy and the woman reportedly began right around April of last year when the boy was 11.
The woman's son took a day off school and encouraged his friend to do likewise, spending the day at his home.
During the course of the day, the woman gave the boy beer and then later took part in a sexual encounter with him.
The sexual contact continued for a number of months after the initial encounter. The boy had turned 12 by the time the child was born.
Social services took the baby into care about two months ago.
The boy approached his principal in his office about two-thirds of the way through the 2012 school year and told him he had a disclosure to make.
"You won't be very happy with me," he recalled the boy saying. He said he had been having sex with his friend's mother "and it needs to stop."

A woman has said she refuses to invite one of her son's friends to birthday parties because of his mum's behaviour - and now she's told the mother why.
Sharing her story anonymously, the woman said that her 10-year-old son was throwing a sleepover party to celebrate his birthday and he invited his closest friends from school - except one.
The boy, named James, had been invited in the past - but his mother was always late to collect him so now the birthday boy's parents decided enough was enough.
They didn't like being at the wayward mum's beck and call, so they didn't invite James - but then James' mother caught wind of the party and asked why he wasn't invited.
Sharing the story on Reddit, the mother of the birthday boy said: "My son is/was friends with a boy named James from his class. He came to the last two sleepover parties, and while well behaved, it was his parents who I felt were the problem.
"When we send out the invites, we tell the parents when the party is and what time to pick the kids up the next day. For the last two parties, James was always the last one to be picked up."
The mother went on to say that at a previous party James' mother was supposed to pick the boy up at 11am as the family had other plans, but the mother didn't turn up until much later.

She continued: "I assumed she ran an errand and was just running behind, no big deal. By 12:30, she hadn't shown up, I texted her again and I reminded her that we had somewhere to be and she needed to get here as soon as possible.

"She responded that she was eating lunch and would be there soon. By 2:00PM I texted her again and let her know that she needs to pick up her son ASAP, that we were getting ready to leave in an hour and her son was not invited to come with us.
"I had assumed that would prompt her to come get him. By 4:00PM my husband left with our kids to my in laws, and I called James' mother.
"I left her a voicemail and told her that if she was not at my house in thirty minutes to pick up her son, I was calling the police to inform them that he was an abandoned child.
"She showed up within fifteen minutes to get him. She made a half-a**ed apology about how she was busy with errands and running her other children to their activities."
The woman continued: "Today I received a text message from her about why James was not invited to the sleepover party. Apparently one of the other moms was talking about how much fun the kids had at the party, and she wanted to know why her son was not invited.
"So I told her the truth, that her son was not invited because I was not sure if she would come get him in a timely manner and without disrupting our plans for the rest of the day.
"I explained that any time her son is at my house, she is always late to pick him up and I was tired of catering to her schedule. She called me an uppity b**ch, and has since blocked me on social media and her phone."

After sharing her story online and asking for advice, many Reddit users flocked to the woman's defence and said she did nothing wrong.
One user said: "You gave her the honest reason based on experience. Instead of saying, 'You're right, I'm so sorry. I don't mean to have my child punished for my behaviour, so could you please give him/me another chance?' she responded with profanity and blocked you?
"That's a good way to ensure the poor kid will never be invited again - and no doubt other parents feel the same way."
And another added: "Her use of the word 'uppity' makes me think there may be a socioeconomic class difference between you and James' family.
"So she’s decided the OP 'is looking down on her'. In her mind OP is the asshole who is 'discriminating' against them. Someone like that will always twist the narrative in their head to make themselves some kind of victim."
While a third person said: "That mom is used to hearing this issue raised. If she's treating OP this way, she likely treats any adults who ever care for her child's time the same.
"That mom didn't have to think this through, she's been here many times before. The "insult them and block" is apparently her chosen go-to behaviour.
"If she lacks self-awareness one day she'll look around her and wonder why she can't get anyone to interact with her where her child is involved."
