After a mysterious group of individuals breaks into Laura's home and attempts to steal her eight-year-old son, David, the two of them flee town in search of safety. But soon after the failed kidnapping, David becomes extremely ill, suffering from increasingly sporadic psychosis and convulsions. The commitment to blood-vomiting, entrail-chewing special effects, and the niggle of child peril anxiety makes for an effectively propulsive genre picture.
Kavanagh once again delivers potent chills and an ominous atmosphere to create a powerfully discomforting depiction of just how far a mother would go for her son.

Son hits in so many emotional spectrums and somehow does so with impact in each. It's not easy to craft a story that scares you or a story that pokes at your heart and somehow Kavanagh does both. Tearjerking and terrifying, Son is a must watch.
A dark and bloody horror thriller that explores the maternal bond in the face of paranoia and trauma. Is she really being pursued by a cult? Is her son really changing?

Filled with disturbing scenes, plenty of blood and gore, and more than one ghastly moment, Son delivers the chills if not the jumps.

It really doesn't do anything we haven't seen before and the script is fairly routine, but as a director, Ivan Kavanagh does have some flair.
Gets credit for exploring the emotional trauma of a mother/son relationship, which is more than what most horror thrillers accomplish, the film is still a mixed bag that keeps you invested but can't resist the urge to stumble into its own spooky traps.
