A mum says she has been forced to sleep in her sons room because the walls and ceiling in parts of her flat are plagued with rats.
Laura Monk, 28, lives in a Derby Homes flat claims rats infested a bin store nearby before managing to make their way into the block of flats via damaged air vent covers.
The mum-of-two says the rats now keep her up at night as she hears them crawling in the walls.
Miss Monk said: "I dread to think how many there are, there must be about 40 or 50 there. We've got a bin store that's attached to the building. That's where they've started making their home and nesting and managing to enter the walls.
"The bin store is filled up with rats everyday so you can't really go in and put your rubbish there.
"At night you can hear them more, you can hear them scratching in my bedroom wall. You can hear them scratching, you can hear them squeaking and you can hear rumbling sounds from when they move.
"Thursday night was horrific, I basically had to move out at half past ten last night and go and stay at my mum's because they were in my ceiling.
"I've never heard anything like it. You could literally hear them running across the ceiling. It was above my room, the kids' room and the bathroom. You could hear them running so fast it sounded like there was hundreds up there, it was just awful."
Miss Monk says that she and her mother, who lives on the top floor of the building, have repeatedly reported the problem to housing officers.
"I suffer from paranoia and anxiety, living with rats isn't helping either of them at the minute and on Thursday night I just broke down. I was freaking out, it was horrible," she said.
"I've genuinely never heard anything like that and I don't think Derby Homes realises how bad it actually is.
"They're not living with it and they're not hearing it every day, they just seem to think it's okay. I've got two kids, I've slept with my three-year-old for the last few months because I daren't go in my bedroom."
A spokesperson for Derby Homes said: “We continue to work with tenants in the affected block to keep them informed of the actions being taken in response to the reported infestation.
"Work to date has included liaison with pest control specialists, exploratory and remedial drain work, replacement of damaged air vent covers and replacement of communal bins.
"We are liaising with residents on the outcomes of the most recent pest treatment and will continue to work closely with them until the matter is resolved.
"As a further support to residents, our Estate Officers have increased communal area bin inspections in the block to ensure the bin areas remain clear of food items that may attract unwanted pests.”
