How to Replace the Ignition Key on a Saab 9-3

Unlike older models, most modern Saab cars use an electronic transponder inside the key-fob rather than a physical key to unlock and start the vehicle. The first step is to remove the key-fob off. Insert an open-ended head into the slot that is in the middle of your case. It is important to take your time, as the plastic is extremely thin and is susceptible to damage.
Once the case is opened and you are able to prepare the new key by combining the lower part of the previous key with the transponder and banana on the new key. This will ensure that the new key is connected to the CIM correctly, which can make all the difference when replacing the only key for your Saab 9-3.

If you don't have two keys, you'll need to remove the steering wheel and dashboard to access the ignition. Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Once the battery is disconnected, you can take off all the trim pieces as well as dashboard pieces that surround the steering wheel. How to replace the ignition Key on a Saab 9-5

How to replace the ignition Key in the Saab XC90
If your SAAB 9-3 key fob starts having problems turning the lock barrel it could be time to replace it. It's a simple process and you don't need to visit a dealership. You can do it at home, using a couple of simple tools.
You'll first need to prepare the new keys. Before you start, ensure that the anti-theft device is disabled by placing blocks on the rear wheels and releasing the handbrake. Insert the key into the ignition, and then turn it to the "on" position. This will activate the accessories, but will not start the engine. Repeat this procedure 5 times, then turn off the key in the "on" position.
You'll then need to purchase a new case for your key fob. They are readily available at many auto parts stores and are generally quite affordable. They can be purchased without electronics depending on the model.
To open up the case, put a flathead screwdriver in the slot that is in the middle and gently work it. The case will break easily, and once you do, you'll have access to the internal electronics. To remove the electronics, employ a small screwdriver and attempt to pull them out in a gentle manner.
