When my husband suggested we watch this movie I had zero interest. But once it started, I couldn't look away. The story in itself is amazing. This young man is amazing. Beyond the story, the filming and the way it was put together was professional and amazing. A very good watch!

My five stars is likely due to the fact that I went into this knowing what to expect, after reading the reviews here. I loved it, actually. I did not think I would, but the reviews, particularly the negative ones, actually intrigued me more. I’ve always been interested in Alex Honnold. It’s the same as my fascination with the late Dean Potter. These two have some similarities, beyond their daredevil climbing, for sure. What drew me to wanting to watch this film was an interest more in the psychology and especially his relationship with Sanni amidst his lifestyle. From my perspective I think that, though I initially felt annoyed and slightly suspicious of Sanni, I actually realized through watching this that, regardless of either of these two humans personal flaws, they are actually in love with one another. The love is true. What can anyone do to change that? And being one who does believe that the heart has its own wisdom, I think they are meant to be a part of one another’s lives. Whether it’s for the rest of their lives (short or long) I couldn’t say. But they are attracted to each other for a reason. Especially on a psychological level. And... they are so young. Young, and learning. So I forgive Sanni for being a somewhat (in many ways) typical girl in her 20s. I felt tenderness for her, especially in light of the often harsh and negative comments I’ve been reading here about her. She’s just a human trying to figure out life, and she goes after what she wants. Too many don’t. I applaud her for that. As far as Alex... I see him as an immensely unique individual who has his own psychological traumas from childhood centering around perfectionism and not feeling good enough. So these climbs, though obviously a true passion for him, are also fueled by this psychological trauma of needing to be perfect... in fact... needing to be absolutely superb. The best of the best. In a way, it’s like he is the realized subject of what Dean Potter called himself: An Artist. PS. I found that monumental climb at the end absolutely intolerable to sit through. I had to shield my eyes through much of it. Even knowing, obviously, that he doesn’t fall, and even watching it a second time. I simply could not bare it.

‘Look what you have overcome to get here Look at the distance you've run The doubts that you’ve pushed down Fear that you've drowned out When they said that it couldn't be done’ Gravity by Tim McGraw What do you do when you are the first and only Free Solo climber of El Capitan in Yosemite ? Who knows but we do know Alex Honnold has trained relentlessly to conquer this 3000 foot piece of rock. If you have not seen El Capitan, try to see it, a magnificent feat for a climber, none the less one without any ropes or any safety precautions. He had his feet and hands and his intelligence. Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin are the filmmakers of this documentary. Jimmy Chin has been with Alex for ten years. He has filmed and photographed Alex 1,000 times on his solo climbs. Alex is a child of a father who had Aspergers and never had a hug, nor was he told he was loved. His mother is alive and well, why she did not hug is a mystery. Thus Alex found his life centered around climbing, extreme climbing. He had his brain imaged with an MRI which showed he needs much more stimulation to show excitement or emotion. And, then Sanni, a lovely young woman comes into his life, and he does find love. However, climbing free solo is his first love and El Capitan is to be conquered. As we climb with Alex it is an unbelievable sensation, and I had to look away several times. But, it is an enormous relief to see him summit. He summited in 3hours and some odd minutes, what a relief and feeling of joy. And, to top it all this documentary won an Oscar for Best Documentary. Wonderful, wonderful!
