Let's take a closer look at the 2022 Electra Meccanica Solo.
ElectraMeccanica Vehicles Corp is a Canadian Vancouver-based vehicle designer and manufacturer that recently made the leap to global electric vehicle manufacture. The company released its first flagship product called the SOLO , which is a purpose-built, single-seat, three-wheeled, fully electric cars that hit the assembly line in the fall of 2020.
Let's take a closer look at the 2022 Electra Meccanica Solo.
The Solo EV has a range of 100 miles, powered by a 17.3kWh NCA liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery and a top speed of 80 miles per hour, certifying its safety to be driven on highways. She also packs 103 ft-lbs. of torque, a 53hp electric motor and a rearwheel drivetrain capable of pushing 0-60mph in 10 seconds.
On a level 2, 220V charger, the Solo EV charges exceptionally fast and is fitted with a J1772 universal connector that is compatible with universal charging stations, and it is possible to install a low-cost charging station at your personal residence. It takes roughly four hours for a full charge, but an overnight charge (8 hours) is recommended for a typical 110V charger.
Although the Solo is technically classified as a motorcycle, on its front stands a slick grille neatly mounted on a set of 15” wheels, flanked by stylish LED headlamps. The single-seat high visibility cabin is accessible by two doors on each side, meaning you could park at a tight spot and easily exit and enter the vehicle and a single 215-40 R16 wheel on the rear.
It offers a full digital LCD instrument cluster , a rear view camera, a 4-way adjustable heated seat, climate control and defogger system, a digital Bluetooth stereo system, and remote keyless entry. The fully enclosed cabin with a steering wheel and foot pedals delivers the aura of the normal passenger vehicle we’re all used to but only for a single occupant.
As far as safety is concerned, the Solo EV is fitted with triple-level side impact protection on both sides and a roll bar to keep the driver safe in the event of a collision. The EV’s engineers also considered employing Electronic Stability Control (ESC), which is a computerized technology that improves vehicle stability by detecting and reducing loss of traction when making tight turns at high speed.
This means braking is automatically applied to the wheels individually to counter oversteer and understeer, thus reducing the chances of the driver losing control of the vehicle. The Solo EV proves undoubtedly safer, more reliable, and more weather resistant than a two-wheeled motorcycle.
The Solo has two responsive 15” front wheels shod with 135-70 R15 tires, a wide steering geometry upfront, power disc brakes, and offers a great turning radius considering it runs on three wheels. Combined with an electronic power steering, the Solo is capable of comfortably maneuvering around tight spots, making it remarkably easier to park compared to a four-wheeled passenger car.
With a 53” height, the Solo EV offers a relatively low seating position, giving it a sense of sportiness and a low center of gravity that majorly contributes to its stability. She rides smoothly on the highway, and the build is quite commendable for a three-wheeled vehicle.
The Solo EV also has a sense of uniqueness in the fact that the 180-degree view from the Solo’s single seat cabin is superb considering you have a clear view of all around the vehicle. Further, with the help of the power mirrors and a rear view camera, the vehicle has very minimal blind spots. The Solo also comes with a five cubic ft. trunk and carpeted storage compartment under the hood , which is quite a lot of storage space relative to what two a wheeled motorcycle has to offer.
As unorthodox as it may seem, the Solo single-seat EV makes a lot of sense in the real world. Most drivers on the road in normal passenger vehicles tend to be on personal errands and drive alone, and a four-seat cabin is a little too extra for one occupant. This cumulatively concludes the increase in the number of vehicles on the road and results in traffic congestion.
With the Solo EV, the car occupies only 10 feet in length and is all you need for a solo drive. Do the math, and the benefits are enormous to both the ecosystem and the flow of traffic . The car is also astonishingly low maintenance considering it has 99% fewer parts than an internal combustion engine vehicle, reducing the chances of the car breaking down and in turn saves you cash. The Solo EV also enhances a zero carbon footprint considering it is a fully electric vehicle; it doesn't emit incombustible gases into the atmosphere.
With prices ranging from $18,500, the Solo EV is available for pre-order from their company website and comes in red, white, black, and grey—a perfect low-cost, low maintenance, eco-friendly EV that could potentially shape the future of micro-mobility.

2022 Solo 401(k) Contribution Limits & Maximum Deferrals

Employee Deferral – $19,500
Employer Contribution – $38,500
Catch-up Contribution – $6,500
Total Contribution Limit – $58,000 or $64,500 for those age 50 and older

Employee Deferral – $20,500
Employer Contribution – $40,500
Catch-up Contribution – $6,500
Total Contribution Limit – $61,000 or $67,500 for those age 50 and older

Each year, the IRS adjusts the Solo 401(k) contribution limits mainly due to cost of living increases. Some years, there is little if any change. Others, like 2022, there is a nice bump to what you can save annually. Currently, the Solo 401(k) contribution limits are $58,000 or $64,500 if you at least age 50. The 2022 Solo 401(k) contribution limits will increase those totals. Here is what you can expect to see next year.
For the past two years, the employee deferral has remained the same at $19,500. For 2022, you can contribute an additional $1,000 to a 401(k) plan. However, the catch-up contribution, for those at least age 50, remains the same as 2021. The employer contribution increased a whopping $3,000 from 2021, which means you may contribute a lot more money as the employer.
Those with self-employment income can contribute as both the employee and employer. This means anyone with a Solo 401(k) plan may contribute up to $67,500, an increase of $3,000. A percentage of your business/self-employment income is used to determine the amount you can contribute as the employer. The compensation used for this calculation also increases to $305,000, which is $15,000 more than 2021.
Further, if your employer allows for them, you can contribute after-tax funds up to the new annual limit of $67,500. However, the recently-updated tax proposal has closed the “backdoor” on after-tax conversions. Beginning in 2022, you will no longer be able to convert after-tax funds to a Roth. As a result, making after-tax contributions to a 401(k) may not be a wise decision.
It’s important to keep in mind, that the overall contribution limit is for all 401(k) plans and types of contributions in the aggregate. Therefore, if you contribute to a 401(k) plan through your employer, this lessens the amount you can save in a Solo 401(k) plan. Obviously, if you only have one 401(k) plan, you may contribute the maximum to that plan.
As an employee, you have the option to make the Elective Deferral, also known as an employee contribution. For 2022, the Solo 401(k) maximum contribution limit for the elective deferral is $20,500 if you’re 50 and under. This is an increase of $1,000 from 2021.
The elective deferral contribution if you’re 50 and older is $27,000, again, a $1,000 increase from 2021. Employee deferral contributions can be made in pretax or Roth.
The Solo 401(k) Profit Sharing Contribution is also known as the Employer Contribution. For 2022, you can make a contribution of $40,500, which is an increase of $2,000 from 2021, no matter your age. Unlike the employee deferral contribution, which is a dollar-for-dollar contribution, the Solo 401(k) plan employer contribution is based on a percentage of earned income.
You may contribute up to 20% or 25% of your self-employment income. Please note that these contributions can only be made pretax, and not Roth.
Your spouse can participate in the Solo 401(k) Plan if he/she earns compensation from a business. He or she can make separate and equal contributions. This increases the annual contribution to $122,000 (under age 50) or $135,000 (50+) that a couple can make for 2022.
The saver’s credit is an incentive for low- and moderate-income earners. This tax credit is provided to those people who save for retirement, who are under certain income thresholds. To receive the credit, your annual income must fall below $68,000 if you are married filing jointly (up $2,000 from 2021), $51,000 if you file as a head of household (up $1,500) or $34,000 if you are a single filer or married filing separately (up $1,000).
As you can see, there are big changes to the 2022 Solo 401(k) contribution limits. Everyone with a 401(k) plan may contribute an additional $1,000. If you are self-employed, you can contribute a whopping $3,000 more.
