Solo Stove makes some of the best smokeless fire pits. Now they're a lot easier to clean, based on our hands-on test with the new middle-sized Bonfire 2.0 model.

Solo Stove fire pits are among the best smokeless fire pits out there, and while they work great and their stainless steel construction gives them a sleek appearance, they have one flaw: They're not so easy to clean up. However, that's changing with the arrival of the new Solo Stove 2.0 fire pits , which are available in the same three sizes -- Ranger 2.0 (small), Bonfire 2.0 (medium) and Yukon 2.0 (large) -- and have a removable ash pan, a feature missing from the 1.0 models (which are no longer available for sale).
I tested the midsize Bonfire 2.0 model, and it's been a breeze to get fires started -- the 2.0 fire pits have the same 360-degree Airflow Technology that allows for smokeless fire -- and on the outside, the 2.0 fire pit looks the same as the 1.0 version. The difference is on the inside: once your fire has gone out and fully cooled down, you simply remove the screen over the pan, which collects the majority of the cinders, then remove the pan itself and dump the remaining ash (you no longer have to turn over the fire pit to remove the ash). A bit of the finer ash can end up at the bottom of the fire pit basin after you remove the pan but that's easy to remove with a wet rag or paper towel.
I was able to get a robust fire going in just under 10 minutes.
Alas, if you already own a Solo Stove 1.0 fire pit, you can't buy the new removable ash pan for it. "There is no way to retrofit the 1.0 Fire Pit to have a removable ash pan," a Solo Stove rep told me. That's unfortunate, but it's certainly a good thing that Solo Stove has finally delivered the most-asked-for feature from its users.

They're still more expensive than the 1.0 models were, but I do think the ash pan is a significant enough upgrade to spend the extra dough on.

Great patio fires. Once burning, it really does burn smoke free. Produces a good flame and nice heat. Two items to note: 1) Standard cut fire light are too long to fit. Must be cut shorter, or you must buy shorter logs. 2) The stainless turns to a gold color after first burn. Looks good, but if you like stainless don't expect it to stay silver.

I was a little concerned putting it on my exposed aggregate patio. Used my laser thermometer and the based read 75 degrees and the top part of the solo read 200 degrees. Worked awesome!

I am not 100% convinced by these stoves. They look great and light really easily. They do not eat up as much wood as I expected and certainly burn reasonably cleanly. Are they better than an old washing machine drum? I don’t think so. The heat all seems to go upwards and does not really radiate out the sides (where people would be sitting). Is it smokeless? Well, you still know you have been sitting around an open fire in the morning as your clothes still smell of smoke. You would not want to leave this out in the rain as it would rust really quickly. I am also still waiting for the bottom stand to arrive which is frustrating after 2 months. I don’t think it will ever arrive.

I bought the bonfire specifically for a wedding party at my home in May. I predicted a chilly evening and wanted guests to be comfortable when outside. The bonfire exceeded all expectations, and I should be getting commission from solo stove due to the number of additional subsequent purchases from our guests! Everyone loved it. We had 10 people standing around it, many in disbelief that there was so much heat yet so little smoke. It became the centrepiece of the wedding party and it paid for itself in one evening. Amazing product.

I cant praise this stove fire pit enough it really is outstanding, used for the first time yesterday and our guests were mesmerized with the flames swirling around and even more amazing your clothes didn't smell of smoke at the end of the night, had a look this morning and there was very little to clean all the wood had virtually burnt away.

1. Airflow - Cool air comes in the bottom vents to feed the fire and enters between the two layers of stainless steel to be heated up. Having cool air come in the bottom vents allows the fire to always plenty of oxygen.
2. Raised Ash Pan - The ash pan is raised to keep the embers and coals contained and not clog the airflow. It's also elevated to protect the surface below.
3. Base Plate - The base plate allows a continuous supply of air to reach the fire while allowing the spent ash to fall into the ash pan. This ensures that no wood goes unburned! Since more oxygen can reach the fuel source, fire wood is burned more efficiently than traditional fire pits.
4. Secondary Burn - This is where the magic happens! The air that enters the double wall warms up and is pushed out over the fire. This creates a second burn that burns off the small particles of wood that would have been smoke. These upper vents also create the unique flame pattern so many customers rave about!
