For years, actress Soleil Moon Frye covered up at the beach. Now, the mom of three, who has lost 40 lbs. on Nutrisystem , is sporting a bathing suit for the first time in decades – and loving every minute of it!
“My husband said to me, ‘You’re the girl who always wears surfer shorts and rash guards [on the beach], so I didn’t even know what you looked like in a bathing suit until now!'” Frye tells PEOPLE.
So what does she think of her new body? “This is my best version of me,” says Frye, whose third child, son Lyric turned 1 in February.
Frye admits she was struggling with her body image last year after giving birth to Lyric. “I had the baby, and I was waiting for it to start coming off,” she says. “The frustrating thing for me was that one day I would lose a pound, but the next day I’d be back up two pounds. I needed help kicking it into gear.”
And after a serious low point – “when Lyric was four months old, four people in one week asked me when I was expecting” – Frye reached out to a friend who told her about Nutrisystem. “I haven’t felt deprived at all,” she says of her time on the program, which she started in May 2014. “It has something for every one of my cravings. And it’s just about making smart choices. I don’t want to go on a crash diet. I want to sustain this. I needed something that I could actually do and stay healthy.”
Finding body confidence is even more important to Frye in terms of setting a good example for her daughters, Poet, 9 and Jagger, 7. “I really want my girls to have a healthy image to look to,” she says. “I don’t want to be the mom that’s like, ‘I can’t have any ice cream.’ So the girls eat their ice cream sandwiches and I eat my Nutrisystem ice cream sandwiches. It’s been fun!”
An added bonus? Fitting into some pre-pregnancy fashion. “I have these really great rock and roll leather pants,” says Frye. “I put them on and it was amazing!”

Soleil Moon Frye (/soʊˈleɪ/; born August 6, 1976) is an American actress, director and screenwriter. She began her career as a child actor at the age of 2. When she was 7 years old, Frye won the role of Penelope "Punky" Brewster in the sitcom Punky Brewster. The series, which debuted on NBC in September 1984, earned consistently low ratings but the Punky character was a hit with young children. After NBC canceled the series, it was picked up for the syndication market where it aired for an additional two seasons ending in 1988.
After the series ended, Frye continued her career in guest spots on television and supporting roles in films. She attended The New School during the late 1990s, and directed her first film, Wild Horses in 1998. In 2000, she joined the cast of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch as Roxie King, Sabrina Spellman's (Melissa Joan Hart) roommate and close friend. Frye remained with the series until its end in April 2003. She has since continued her acting career working mainly as a voice actor. Frye also voiced Aseefa in the animated series Planet Sheen.
In 1998, Frye married producer Jason Goldberg, with whom she has four children. She has since opened an organic specialty clothing shop for children, The Little Seed, in Los Angeles. She also hosts a blog and web series which focus on child rearing and women's issues. In 2011, Frye released her first book Happy Chaos: From Punky to Parenting and My Perfectly Imperfect Adventures in Between. Frye is currently the host of Home Made Simple on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Soleil Moon Frye has a new documentary on Hulu called Kid90 that uses footage from her actual youth in the 90s in which the young and curious teen Soleil carried around a video camera everywhere to record she and her famous friends hanging out. It's an endearing documentary that shows them all having fun as well as showing the highs and lows (mostly the lows, honestly) of famous young people. All of this is to say, that this documentary has brought Soleil into people's minds again. It has many people flocking to Mr. Skin to ask: has Soleil Moon Frye ever gone nude?
The answer is disappointing. No, she hasn't. Everyone knows that Punky is blessed in the chest, but she has kept her breasts under wraps. Sad! That being said, she has shown up in her lingerie a few times for the camera. In the 1996 film Mind Games , she entered our mind with her beautiful cleavage.
