Outstanding sound, supreme value. Learn more
Analog tape has a smoothing effect and adds weight and glue to a mix – it turns the recording from a collection of individual tracks into a song, where everything is connected and works together.
Tape, with its component-level and physical modeling of three different tape machines, gives you all the warm vintage cohesion you could want in one plug-in. Add a few premium level features, like the mastering grade high shelf filter, stability control, and wet/dry mix knob, and you've got a new secret sauce. Mmm... tasty!
"Tape sounds FANTASTIC. I like Type A and C the best. Overall, the sound of it is outstanding!!!"
American music producer, composer, technologist, audio technician, multi-instrumentalist
Select your favorite tape machine (A, B, or C) and adjust the Amount knob. Instant mojo. Easier still, load up one of the included presets to soak your tracks in analog tape sweetness.
Experiment with different tape speed settings, or open the Remote Control panel where you can adjust the machine's stability, crosstalk amount, and several other features.
Like most Softube plug-ins, Tape is CPU-efficient. Use Tape on your master bus, or do it the retro way by adding Tape to every track. Tons of detail and texture, no CPU overload.
"Softube Tape is my new favorite saturation plug in. Parallel it with your kick or bass and drive it hard—thick and fat. Tape also lives on my mix buss alongside a couple of other Softube modeled plug-ins, glues my tracks, and gives me a lot of sonic options; from transparent to unwieldy and everywhere in between."
Producer, engieer and mixer for Smashing Pumpkins, Sheryl Crow and Kris Kristofferson
There are many ways to use and abuse a tape machine, and many modern engineers have never had the pleasure of working with a real (reel to reel) analog unit. That's why, to get you started, Tape includes presets made by award winning engineers such as Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, U2, Strokes) and Howard Willing (Smashing Pumpkins, Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson).
But there's no wrong answer. Crank Tape to its extremes and you'll get sounds that wouldn't even be possible in most analog machines, at extra-slow speeds for example, or with insane wow and flutter.
Type A is based on a classic Swiss high end reel-to-reel machine, known and loved for its precision and linearity. Type B is much more colorful — it's a transformer based machine which adds extra weight and cream to the low end. Lastly, Type C is based on a British tape machine with a distinct vintage vibe.
Each has its own story to tell, and its own special something to impart to your music. So experiment, listen closely, and choose wisely.
If you run Presonus Studio One, you can not only use Tape as a standard plug-in. Adding Tape to your MixFX slot gives you Tape Multitrack. Tape Multitrack includes all the goodies of Tape, but in addition, you get selectable crosstalk between each individual track — and you can easily control the Tape Multitrack settings from a single interface. The Tape and Tape Multitrack license is one and the same. This means that if you're not a Studio One user but at some future point decide to switch to that DAW, you will already have Tape Multitrack installed, licensed and ready to go.
You hear people talk about “the sound of tape”. However, there is not just one sound. Tape speed, head bump, distortion, transient response, hiss, crosstalk, bias, and other factors can all contribute to the sound.
An R&B or rock album may use 15ips across all tracks to saturate the mix with harmonics and low end by using tape B for vintage flavor. A classical or jazz album may only put Tape on the master bus at 30ips with Tape A or C to keep the tracks as clean as possible while pulling together the mix with some harmonic glue. A punk band may drive their guitars at 1 7/8 its while adjusting the stability and mix to create a gnarly flanging effect.
"I love the Softube Tape plug-in. It's great for just adding a touch of analog tape simulation to a final mix, but more impressively it's great for adding character to vocals and guitars. It provides instant glue for harsh or overly transient sounds in a mix."
Mixer/Engineer/Producer for Beck, U2, The Strokes, Elton John, etc.

All Softube products require a computer with appropriate DAW host software (none of which are included).
Versions from 2.5.18 and newer of the Softube plug-ins have the following minimum requirements:
However, due to plug-in host differences between DAWs - and our own rigorous testing standards - we only officially test our plug-ins and instruments in the most recent versions of Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Ableton Live, Studio One, Reaper and Cakewalk. Softube plugins are not tested in non-listed systems, but they most likely work as long as the system requirements are met. We cannot guarantee a solution for issues in unsupported systems.
Note: Softube plug-ins support 64-bit hosts only, and a 64-bit OS is required.
Note: With regards to the different VST formats, we strongly recommend using VST3 as some of our plug-ins have features that are not present in the older VST formats.
Supported sample rates: 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz, in both mono and stereo.
The most recent maintenance release of your DAW application is recommended. AAX DSP is not currently in active development. TDM/VENUE are no longer supported (old downloads are available on the Legacy Installers page)

Saturation Knob Is A FREE Analog Saturation Effect By Softube

By Tomislav Zlatic // Updated on January 23, 2021 News
Softube released Saturation Knob, a freeware saturation effect for digital audio workstations on Windows and macOS (requires free iLok user account).
Saturation Knob has been around for quite a while now. The plugin was first released back in 2011 as a free add-on for few select digital audio workstations (Pro Tools, Cakewalk Sonar, PreSonus Studio One, and Propellerhead Reason).
Thanks to a recent update, Saturation Knob is now compatible with all VST, AU, AAX, and RTAS plugin hosts on the market. It’s a great way to introduce some analog-style saturation to your mix.
One-knob style effects are not everyone’s favorite kind of audio tool. However, there’s no doubt that such tools will help boost your mixing workflow. Using specialized plugins with simple controls can save tons of time during a mixing session.
When it comes to compressors and equalizers, you’ll obviously want all the algorithm control you can get (although the incredibly simple DC1A compressor is still one of my all-time favorites). But with “analog mojo” tools, it often helps to use them as simple plug and play effects, just like a guitar pedal.
Saturation Knob by Softube is exactly that kind of plugin.
It features a single knob for adjusting the amount of saturation. The saturation algorithm works in three modes, depending on the flavor of the harmonic distortion you’re looking for. And that’s it! No additional controls to worry about.
Here’s how Softube describes the Saturation Knob plugin:
“The free plug-in Saturation Knob is a modeled output distortion that can be used anywhere you need some grit. Use it to fatten up bass lines, add some harmonics and shimmer to vocals, or simply destroy your drum loop.”
Saturation Knob is available in VST, AU, AAX, and RTAS plugin formats compatible plugin hosts on PC and Mac. It also works as a Rack Extension for Propellerhead Reason.
Please note that a free iLok user account and the iLok License Manager are required to activate the software (but you don’t need the physical iLok dongle).
Download: Saturation Knob (421 MB download size, EXE installer, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU/AAX/RTAS plugin format for Windows & macOS, RE format for Propellerhead Reason).

Wow, but more than 1GB installation for a saturation plugin? Why is it so big?
The installer contains all Softube products in one package.
You can download this separately as well, without all the other stuff. I just did it.
This is excellent news! Will go right next to Camel Crusher!
Oh yeah, the Camel Crusher is an oldie but still a goodie!
Tomislav, 7-Zip can also extract this file and some people might already have that installed. Extracting is the first thing I try with every single VST-plugin that comes with an .exe-installer.
Thanks for the tip UserFX, I’ll give it a try! Nice one!
Thanks UserFX, that tip saved me jumping through hoops with the installer. Can confirm (in windows), open the executable as an archive file with 7-zip, navigate to the “$_OUTDIR”directory, then at the bottom should be the saturation knob dll. Extracted it into my plugin directory and it opened up fine in Reaper. Thanks again!
Thats sad. I can deal with registration and newsletters but to I won’t download a 421MB packet just to install a vst that is probably something like 10MB. My internet connetion is slow as hell (ISP fail) and it would take 2 hours to download it.
It’s definitely a large download, but perhaps you could let it download over night?
I just installed it on OS X; the reason it’s such a large installer is because it has some stupid “Softube Plug-in Control” application that installs with the plugins to manage which ones will be available in you host. Kind of like the plugin manager that every major DAW has built in only three times as large.
I can confirm on Mac OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks and Logic Pro X 10.0.7 that you can install the plug-in, use Softube’s plug-in manager application to enable Saturation Knob, then delete the plug-in manager application.
Not that I’d like it even if I did, but I get the point of this plug-in manager if you own every single Softube plug-in. For a single free plug-in though it’s overkill. I also don’t get why the plug-in manager application is over 1Gb on your hard drive for what it does.
For those wondering the plug-ins themselves are a normal size (10Mb for the AU).
Thanks for the Mac OS report Robert! Much appreciated!
The Softube software installs all of the vendors plugins and you select which plugins to install. Unfortunately the uninstalled plugins are keep on your disk drive as junkware. I uninstalled it.
Can anyone upload the installed .dll file? This download is too huge!
Their download is absurd and they better god damn know it. 7MB free plugin, over 400MB of unwanted demos and some b******t program to manage it all.
Sorry guys, posting download links to third party software is not allowed.
Shame it doesn’t work on XP – But i saved the .dlls to the day I’ll upgrade my system :)
Just for the record – I’ve hesitated A LOT before moving to Windows 7, however my impressions so far (after two years of use, I think) are great.
I’ll definitely upgrade my system one day, but only when I’ll upgrade my PC, and it’s not that urgent yet :)
Giving away a free plugin like this is a great way for Softube to market the rest of their products. They make you download them all by luring you in with the promise of something free (and pretty awesome), and then you get tempted and pay for the ones you want to activate.
Honestly 420mb is not such a huge download… I live in a third world country where a 10mb line is about as good as it gets. I have a 4mb shaped line and the download only took like 40 minutes. At least it doesn’t require an iLok like some other ‘free’ plugins on offer (ahem, Slate!) :)
The installer allows you to select which plugin to activate, and then it says that “unactivated plugins have been removed.” But for me, that wasn’t the case. It’s nice to have the freebie, but if you don’t want the vestiges of the inactive VSTs, you’ll want to visit the installation directories and clean things out. I downloaded both the 32-bit and 64-bit, so give that a thought too, if you’ve installed both.
I LOVE this plugin but when I download the RTAS installer Saturation Knob is missing!
The installer shows other plugins but I just can’t find Saturation knob.
These are not ALL free plugins in the package right?
my computer is 64bit and daw is 32bit, but knob is automatically down 64bit. How do you download 32bit?
How to download the saturation knob? It says it’s free but I’m unable to download it from the website
