Commentators describe this as the latest in a series of actions that are weakening democracy in Cambodia. Democracy cannot exist without an independent media, says Dana Green, Chair of the IBA Media Law Committee. ‘The government's closure of VOD is clearly a violation of basic principles of freedom of the press,’ she says. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 (NDAA) requires certain U.S.-based foreign media outlets to submit reports every 6 months to the Commission regarding the outlets' relations to their foreign principals.

Law enforcement agencies have tapped the oceans of user data, including for the targeting of protesters and activist groups. Powerful political interests have hired data brokers to better influence voters. The data broker Acxiom, another tech firm that partners with many news websites, has provided data to the FBI and discussed programs to sell user data to the Pentagon.

Millions of Turks get their news “incidentally” on Google when they search for information and are presented by the algorithm results that are usually dominated by news publishers’ content. As a result, Google’s gatekeeping algorithm — which regulates its organic search results, carousels and the Google News application’s curation — plays a key role in the visibility and discoverability of news content produced by Turkish media outlets.

Visits to the CNN”s sites were down 37% to 15.9 million in July, while visits to nytimes.com were down 26% to 8.4 million. When it comes to the leading sites for volume of visits, the BBC’s digital properties, bbc.com and bbc.co.uk, remained ahead in the UK. Second-placed dailymail.co.uk counted 137.6 million visits during the month while third-placed theguardian.com had 110.3 million visits. Similarweb data for the BBC however includes visits to both the BBC’s main website as well as BBC News. Its data for MSN similarly covers visits to the portal, rather than just its news section.

Overall, seven of the biggest ten sites saw more visitors in September - the month that featured the death of the Queen and the nation's mourning period - compared to August. MEN was one of only three top ten brands to see month-on-month increase in audience in October, alongside Sky News (audience of 19.8 million, up 5%) and The Sun (28.9 million, up 3%). It was followed by The Sun (27.3 million visitors, 55% reach), the Mirror (25.5 million, reach of 51%), Mail Online (49% reach), The Independent (45% reach) and The Guardian (42% reach). This is the second month for which Press Gazette has year-on-year data for the sites in our top 50 ranking following Ipsos’ recognition as the industry-recognised standard in 2021. At the other end of the top ten list, Metro (14.2 million people, down 18%) saw a double-digit year-on-year fall in audience. Second and third fastest-growing Mail Online and Sky News grew 3% year-on-year (audience of 25.2 million and 17.9 million respectively).

It was followed by The Sun (27.9 million visitors, 56% reach) and Mail Online (24.5 million visitors, 49% reach) which overtook last month’s third biggest site the Mirror. Both the Mirror and Mail Online however saw slightly fewer visitors in September compared to August, and as a consequence saw their reach fall to just below 50%. Audiences spent 9.3 billion minutes with its content in December - over four times as much as second-best placed Mail Online (2 billion minutes) and 11 times as much as third-placed ITV (819.6 million minutes). Among the top 50 as a whole, lifestyle and culture brands performed well for year-on-year growth, although fastest-growing was Reach regional Nottinghamshire Live (audience of 5.3 million, up 102% year-on-year). It was followed by Time Out (4.4 million, up 64%), which closed its print edition last year after 54 years of publication and Glamour UK (3.4 million, up 52%).

Just as a comparison, we repeat the analysis, this time filtering the dataset to keep only the top 25 “newspapers” in Santiago—i.e., excluding radio station, TV channels, etc. (see Fig. 7). Here, for example, it is easy to distinguish newspapers with a local scope, such as portaldemeli or betazeta. For those, the influence of the geographic factor is higher than that of the economic and even the political features. Actually, in the case of portaldemeli (a small commune’s local digital newspaper), the economic factor is almost non-existing. We download the Twitter’s profile of 6,568,769 unique users that follow at least one of the 21 players for which we were able to find an official Twitter account.

“Turkey’s internet media is doing what can be described as ‘fast food newsmaking.’ Most outlets copy-paste each other’s content or following editorial policies burdened by their ideological baggage,” Kapsül editor Minez Bayülgen said. It was also noted that the top results in 94 of the 541 trending searches featured local media outlets such as Des Moines Register and the Houston Chronicle. We also studied the Turkish media outlets’ presence and interaction on YouTube, which is a key platform for many of them, including the broadcasters like Halk TV and next-generation video-based news outlets like Medyascope.

Featuring a massive cross-platform network of channels and insight, the outlet covers everything from breaking news to entertainment. London dominates the media sector in the United Kingdom as national newspapers, television and radio networks are largely based there. Emre Kızılkaya is the vice president of IPI’s National Committee in Turkey, and the project editor of Journo, a non-profit news platform supported by Turkey’s Journalists’ Union (TGS) and the EU. The reason for suicide must not be oversimplified.Suicide never occurs due to a single factor or event, but is the result of a complex interaction of a number of factors and often there is a background of psychosocial problems. It should be emphasized that the overt cause was the precipitating event and not the only cause of the suicide. While publicizing the background factors that may have played a causative role is neither necessary nor desirable, they should be acknowledged. Any history of psychiatric disorders including drug abuse should be mentioned. A couple of years after 7iber made the transition to a professional media in 2012, one of the key strategic issues that we started thinking about was sustainability and reducing dependency on grant funding.

It was followed by The Mirror (24.1 million people, 48% reach) and Mail Online (24 million people, 48% reach). Among the whole list of top 50 sites, fastest-growing was Reach’s Edinburgh Live (3.3 million visitors, up 7% month-on-month), followed by Washington Post (3.9 million visitors, up 53%) and Women’s Health (3.3 million visitors, up 31%). Five of the top ten fastest growing sites were local (or sub-UK level) newsbrands - all owned by national and regional publishing giant Reach.

It was followed by the BBC (39.9 million visitors, up 4%) and The Telegraph (16 million visitors, up 4%). The BBC was once again the UK’s biggest newsbrand by audience reach in July. The public broadcaster’s sites and apps reached 39.2 million people (79% of internet users aged over 15). Second-widest reaching was The Sun (27.9 million people, 56% reach) - the only other brand to reach more than half of the population.

There were 18.5 million visitors to the Telegraph site in September, an increase of 13% month-on-month compared to August. Fastest-growing was Yorkshire Live (7.4 million visitors, up 56% month-on-month) followed by Chronicle Live (9.1 million, up 37%), Lancs Live (3.4 million, up 24%) and Liverpool Echo (13.1 million, up 19%). The number of visitors to the DMGT-owned brand was down 26% year-on-year to 14.5 million, echoing a similar fall (28%) last month.

These results suggest that Turkey’s independent outlets reach a more diverse audience of news consumers on Twitter, while pro-government outlets function in what can be described as an echo chamber. Still, even a follower of a staunchly pro-government media outlet like Haber 7, which is on the edge of the echo chamber, can reach an independent outlet by a few “jumps” through common connections. Haber 61, which has the largest Facebook page in this group, grew 10%, while Dokuz Eylül’s interactions raced with this outlet for several weeks.

From the age of Ipekci, Turkey’s mainstream media had been the primary home to world-class professionalism, editorial diversity, and assets to produce high-quality journalism, including human resources and financial means. The AKP’s years-long campaign, however, led to the slow-motion destruction of this home over the past two decades. In response to a struggle by the media to find interesting images to accompany stories about radio, since 2017 Radiocentre has been building up a library of its own photographs. Settings such as a family breakfast, doing the school run, and getting ready for a night out have been included. This latest suite adds listening while driving alone, caring for children, gardening, doing housework, getting ready for the day and working from home into the mix.

This organization concentrates almost all the political power in this one region. In the same way, according to the annual report published by the Central Bank of Chile for 2016 [53], the Metropolitan Region participated with 46% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (5x the next highest contribution). With this heavily concentrated power in all spheres, and based on our set of hypothesis, the capital of Chile matches all the conditions needed by a population to receive an extensive media coverage. If anything, the “old” news industry has evolved and has adapted to the new environment. Being able to detect this kind of behavior in the media is of utmost importance. For example, a socioeconomic bias in the media system can be very damaging as it may exacerbate the gap between rich and poor areas.

Also in the top five was cornwalllive.com (5.5m, up 16%), devonlive.com (5.2m, up 7%), thesun.co.uk (69.5m, up 7%) and walesonline.co.uk (18.2m, up 7%). Examiner Live, which was rolled into Yorkshire Live and is one of several “Live” brands launched by Reach in recent years, was the second fastest growing site, with year-on-year visits up 64% from 4.6m to 7.5m. When it comes to the monthly growth in visits, inews.co.uk was again the leading site with visits up 48% on June 2021’s figure of 9.1 million. Also in the top five was kentonline.com (6.5 million - up 36%), manchestereveningnews.co.uk (30.9 million - up 29%), hellomagazine.com (26.4 million - up 30%) and thescotsman.com (6.3 million - up 2%).

Publishers should empower journalists to be more active members of their local communities, too. This can entail attending more events in the community while on the job or perhaps working out of a local coffee shop some days rather than in the newsroom. Large news organizations often have a plethora of resources, from newsgathering teams and producers, to editors, legal counsel and more. However, what Information source are increasingly drawn to is the individual talent in the newsroom – journalists they feel they can trust and who hold values in line with their own. The growth of digital advertising has forced nearly every major for-profit news website to utilize the most intrusive forms of mass surveillance, including browsing history and location data — a dynamic highlighted by the OpenX fine.

We think this is due to the fact that this alternative experiment is instead predicting the percentage of the population in the commune that follows the news outlets. This may exacerbate some bias in the selected sample (e.g., certain socioeconomic level of the Twitter users). The alternative target variable presents an interesting hypothesis that we would like to explore in future work. Political bias is probably the most studied type of bias in the mass media [12,13,14,15].

The outlets were selected to represent a range of audience sizes and sectors. “Kloop Media is a respected independent voice that strives to provide reporting about the human rights situation in Kyrgyzstan backed by fact. This attempt by the Kyrgyz authorities to shut it down is the latest move in a regression on freedom of expression and the exercising of human rights for citizens of Kyrgyzstan.

The Twitter’s API allows to automatically access the flow of tweets and query the system for user profiles, followers and tweeting history. This data availability makes it possible to explore the behavior and interactions of personal and institutional accounts, developing and testing social theories at a scale that was unfeasible few years ago. This is the closest thing we have to a record of the every-day life of over 300 million people (Twitter reported 328 million monthly active users in the first quarter of 2017 [31]). The second filter of the PM is in line with the predictions in Proposition 4(b) in [2]. This filter suggests that in their efforts to align their content with the advertisers’ interests, the media have shifted to a lighter and less controversial programming (e.g., lifestyle, fashion, sports, etc.) [5, 6]. In [7], the author presents some evidence of this, showing, for example, the media’s preference for “soft news” content that is favored by advertisers as it targets a demographic of female and young people.

In this regard, independent outlets outperform the pro-government media in the (19.2%) and 55+ age groups (20.3%) and among males (21.6%). However, their most significant underperformance versus Group B outlets is in the (28.7%) and (27.4%) age groups, and among females (27.7%). The two groups did not divert from the median significantly in any of the SES segments.

A population with limited access to the news is less informed and, consequently, less likely to hold authorities responsible for public expenditure and providing broad public welfare [10, 11]. In turn, this motivates the incumbent to prioritize and divert resources to places where they will receive more media coverage and not necessarily where they are most needed. According to Chomsky and Herman [1], these characteristics make the news media system comparable to a political scheme where votes are weighted by income. The list of popular sources these panelists turn to for political and government news often parallels the list of sources they are most likely to trust. When comparing 2021 to 2022 data, only two media outlets experienced double-digit audience growth on social media, Reuters (13.2%) and CNBC (15.2%). This tells me that most other outlets have leveled off regarding social media audience growth.

Among the whole top 50, GB News, which switched to a new .com URL earlier this year, saw the largest audience growth by far, with audience up 472% year-on-year to 8 million. This represents the eighth month in a row for which GB News has been the fastest-growing newsbrand in the UK top 50, being a relatively new website. Reach for The Independent was up 2% year-on-year as the brand reached a UK audience of 21.8 million people. Consumer advice newsbrand Money Saving Expert was meanwhile up 17% to 24.9 million as it re-entered the top ten in tenth place, according to data from Ipsos iris. The Independent and Money Saving Expert were the only top ten newsbrands in the UK to buck the trend by growing year-on-year in November, according to Press Gazette’s latest monthly ranking.

Additionally, these labels include a small icon of a flag to signal the account’s status as a government account and of a podium for state-affiliated media. A story published on VOD earlier that week had quoted a government spokesperson as saying that Hun Manet had signed an aid agreement in response to the earthquake in Turkey instead of his father, an act that Hun Manet denies. As joint chief of staff and deputy commander for the country’s armed forces, this allegation would suggest that Hun Manet had acted outside of his remit. In Your Area was the best -ranked aggregator on the list, this month overtaking DMGT-owned Newzit which featured above it in the list last month. The BBC, the UK’s biggest name in news, reached 38.4 million people in April, a figure largely unchanged from last month (its audience fell by less than 1%). Several household names in consumer finance and consumer choice also made the top 50. Money Saving Expert came in fourteenth place with 13.7 million visitors (down 1% month-on-month) while Money Super Market, part of the same group, was ranked 37th (4.3 million visitors, down 17% month-on-month). Product review and consumer rights brand Which meanwhile came in 35th place (5.3 million visitors, down 10% month-on-month). They were followed by the Daily Express (16.3 million people reached, up 3%) and last month’s fastest growing top ten site Sky News (18 million, up 3%).

For each outlet, we listed their three most popular videos produced in 2020. If the broadcasters, which have a significant competitive advantage, are set aside, it is notable that the staunchly pro-government Yeni Şafak daily and the next-generation independent media outlet Medyascope received the greatest number of video views. It may be encouraging for free press advocates to see two local outlets in Turkey managing to enter this viral content list.

In this case, the advertisers’ contracts have a significant impact on the media growth or even their survival. So, outlets are forced to comply and demonstrate to the announcer how their content may serve to its needs. The audience of a newspaper becomes its product, which can then be “sold” to the sponsors. The power of the press to shape the informational landscape of a population is unparalleled, even now in the era of democratic access to all information outlets. However, it is known that news outlets (particularly more traditional ones) tend to discriminate who they want to reach, and who to leave aside.

The Financial Times saw visits fall 32% to 11.2m, while the audience to metro.co.uk was down 37% to 22.4m. Leading the list for volume of visits were the BBC’s digital properties, bbc.com and bbc.co.uk - clear leaders. Second-placed dailymail.co.uk counted 156.8 million visits during the month - a little over a fifth of the BBC’s figures. Similarweb data for the BBC, includes visits to both the BBC’s main website as well as BBC News. Among the sites with the biggest year-on-year falls in traffic were several US newsbrands.
