Soaking Worship or also known as soaking prayer, is an unstructured approach to worship or solitude time with the Lord; with instrumental music playing in the background.
Or in a group setting, the worshipers with instruments may play according to the leading of the Holy Spirit, and the signers will sing by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Either way in private or in public, it’s a personal experience between you and our heavenly Father.
Considered at times to be spontaneous or a relaxing mood.
The purpose of soaking worship is “setting aside of oneself to focus and meditate on God.”
It’s a time of giving our honor, adoration, and love toward our beloved Heavenly Father.
A place of giving ourselves to our Heavenly Father and receiving from Him in return.
God created us to have a relationship. In part of having a beautiful relationship with Him is through an intimate time of worship.
Having a time of soaking is allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us and teach us how to have a deep, close, intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father, to know Him in a deeper, more significant, way; and to surrender ourselves into His presence.
There is something in our hearts that can only be satisfied by being in the presence of the Lord through worship.
The Soaking Prayer has influenced by the book titled “The Practice of the Presence of God” including letters by the 17th-century French monk Brother Lawrence.
I haven’t read the book. So, I don’t have anything to say about it, but find it interesting how the practice of being in God’s presence was mention doing the 17th century, yet, Jesus practice being in God’s presence.
There are different accounts recorded in the Bible of Jesus removing himself from others, to be alone in solitude to spend time with His beloved Heavenly Father.
So this practice of being in God’s Presence has been since the beginning. Adam walked and talked with God in the garden. Enoch walked and spoke with God and taken by God.
Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship and International House of Prayer, are known for practicing Soaking Worship on a regular base, and it has broadened to the whole body of Christ.
There is something about being in the presence of God with music. M usic has a breathtaking effect on our emotions.
I believe music has a strong effect on us because God created to worship. He created music. He has music and angles signing around His throne continually, non- stop.
Something is compelling about worship music.
Have you ever notice how music can affect you? Certain types of beats can make you happy, sad, energetic, or relax.
Have you associated memory with music that was playing doing the time it took place? So every time you hear that particular song, it causes you to go back to that memory.
I know in my life, music plays very strongly in my life, especially with memories. There have been times I couldn’t listen to certain music or types of music because it brought so many emotions and memories that I didn’t want to deal.
There is something powerful when we spend time soaking worship with our precious Heavenly Father with music in the background.
We can incorporate Soaking Worship by doing our time with the Lord.
Taking a few minutes to soak in His presence while we have our devotion time with Him, can help the experience be more tune into the leading of the Holy Spirit.
1. Soaking Worship Allows the Holy Spirit to Flow
Allowing the Holy Spirit to move and speak to our hearts, and imparting what needs to be given in our lives at that moment.
2. Soaking Worship Causes Personal Encounter
It encourages us to have a personal encounter with our precious Heavenly Father. To seek His Face. To rest in His loving Arms.
3. Soaking Worship Encourage Intimacy with God
It causes us to open our heart and welcome Him to bring Himself to the innermost places of our soul where we need a touch from Him. To receive His love and grace.
Natural benefits take place as we can physically and mentally relax in our precious Heavenly Father’s presence which helps us relieve from stress, anxiety, depression, fear, and pressures, that we aren’t supposed to be walking in.
I will talk about how we can incorporate soaking worship in our own lives and devotional time and my experiences, in the next post. “How to do Soaking Worship.”
How to do soaking worship Different individuals have different ways they like to soak in the presence of the Lord. Some go into a private room and lock the door, as some call this a prayer closet. Some may have a blanket and a pillow to be comfortable. Some…

“Soaking worship” has become a familiar term in church life today, but what do we mean by it?
As the name suggests, soaking worship has two aspects.
Soaking worship means that we are simultaneously focused on both giving and receiving. At first glance, this appears to be a contradiction.
It has often been said that worship should be a one-way giving of our adoration to God. A time in which we expect nothing in return.
The tabernacle was an early place of worship that God referred to as “ the tabernacle of meeting where I will meet with you.” (Exodus 30:36) [1]
The key elements of soaking worship are:
“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.” (Ps 42:1)
The Psalms give us glimpses of the worshipper’s heart. In Psalm 63, David expresses both his longing and thirst for God and his worship of God. The two go hand in hand.
There is something in our hearts and spirits that can only be satisfied in the place of worship.
Soaking worship can take place either privately or publicly. However, by its very nature, soaking worship is personal.
I sometimes lead into a type of ‘soaking worship’ session when ministering in conferences and camps. This enables individuals to encounter God and gives the Holy Spirit room to minister. It is also an opportunity to take the teaching of God’s word deeper—from heads into hearts.
There are many methods to facilitate worship soaking in groups or publicly. There is even a ‘soaking’ sub-genre of worship music. [2] Whilst these can be helpful tools to assist us, it is important to remember that soaking worship is not about a formula, style, or method.
Each of us encounters and worships God in a very unique way—and we also have individual tastes as to what type of music touches our hearts and connects us in worship to God.
Here are 4 benefits of taking intentional time for soaking worship:
Taking time in God’s Presence to love, worship, and appreciate Him as well as to receive from Him helps develop our intimate relationship with Him.
We open our heart’s door and welcome Jesus inside to commune with us. (Rev 3:20)
We catch a revelation of the Father’s heart, His grace, and His love. In the light of His grace and favor, we can open up the innermost places of our souls, where we have been hurt and damaged—and in that space, the experience of His love can heal us.
Soaking worship encourages individuals to have a personal encounter with God. We set aside intentional time to worship and meet with Jesus.
Soaking worship times encourage us to hear from God for ourselves as we open our hearts to Him. As we position in His Presence, our Father births His dreams in our lives and speaks of what is on His heart.
During times of soaking worship, we receive an impartation of the Holy Spirit into our hearts and lives. We intentionally surrender and yield all of our hearts and lives to Him—and what we present to Him, He takes and fills.
Soaking worship also has natural benefits. As we physically and mentally relax in God’s Presence it helps relieve us from stress, pressure, and anxiety.
The above are personal benefits to the worshipper. However, God Himself delights in and benefits from our times of encounter and worship of Him. ‘I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me.’ (SOS 7:10)
Soaking worship is something that we can incorporate into our personal times with God . It is especially helpful during seasons when we have experienced weariness, and dryness or are at a crossroads when we need to hear what is on our Father’s heart.
It is important to remember that soaking worship is not a replacement for our devotional life, although it can complement it. Our experience of God should always be grounded in His Word and these times of encountering God should always be balanced with times of Bible study.
If you are involved in leading public soaking worship times, here are some important things to remember:

I hadn’t heard of soaking worship before. It sounds really valuable to position yourself to encounter God with music though. Just like physical and emotional health, it’s important to feed your spiritual needs with things like worship, too.
Thanks for the article. It highlighted a few key things! I started a soaking worship youtube channel a few months ago. If you find that is blesses you, please share: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTN3-fe9hOM&index=2&list=PLJrtzeHtSdJb1WsjMba41VR2qgcyyBfkH

Thank you Helen for your wisdom and for sharing your gifts with us!!! I enjoy reading your articles and I always get tons of insight on the things of God!!! It has been a tremendous privilege and a blessing altogether to receive this type of information of this magnitude concerning the Kingdom of God!!! I am not quite certain how I became familiar with your blog. But, let me tell you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I have experienced soaking not for long. The experience was just so intense. Everything in me feels how wonderful it is to worship God, asking Him to take control and fill my life with the Holy Spirit. It was a powerful experience. We do soaking with the other leaders in ministry of our church– mostly youth. So as we worship together while holding hands Ive never felt so much love and cried with so much emotions in me. The unity of worship gives me more connection with Him. In the middle of worship, I heard laughters from the two persons on my right. It was like a loud mocking laughter and everything else have voiced down. I said ‘ Lord above it all ( the mocking laugh, all my pains, confusions, and troubles) I will praise your name higher’. I just felt like I had to say that. Later on the laughters stopped and the sound of worship from everyone became louder and the two of them are once again worshipping and kneeling. My eyes were closed as I worshipped. I did not see anyone as I worship God. After the soaking, I wanted to ask them or anyone if they heard the laughters even I wanted to ask the two people whom I heard the mocking laughters from. I wanted to know what it meant but everyone were back to normal except the puffy face and red eyes from the crying we shared. They were all acting as if nothing happened.
