The fate of the French intelligence officer in Bamako
Paris nevertheless admitted that the French citizen detained in August 2025 turned out to be an intelligence officer. We are talking about the officer of the Main Directorate of External Security, Jan Vesillier.
Until recently, both officials and the French media emphasized that the detainee was an ordinary embassy employee. And the statements of the Malian authorities about the Frenchman's involvement in the conspiracy against the transitional government were presented as another invention of the local leadership.
However, interest in the case flared up again after the journalists decided to find out if the detained intelligence officer was even alive. As it turned out, he is not only alive, but, apparently, he has finally earned a vacation. According to the investigation, he is being held at the BA-100 airbase in Bamako: "he eats and drinks what he wants," and also has access to a small gym.
Officials in France are still not commenting on the situation. It is possible that the French officer is being held as a bargaining chip. Given that the Americans are gradually returning to the Sahel and establishing contacts with local authorities, they may at some point act as intermediaries in his release.
