Upgrades to items allow players to increase the gear score of an item up to 700 and also add a final perk. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory before heading to the kiln.

Upgrades to weapons can also reroll the stats of their base. While this is generally a good thing but it can also have negative consequences as well. For item upgrader that only see use in a specific build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs for instance) upgrading them can make them unusable unless you happen to have an extremely lucky roll.
Upgrades can be made to armor items to increase their effectiveness. For instance, if you have chests or helms, it will boost its defense base while a belt and gloves will increase their strength and dexterity. Armor offers a rerolling option for its Enhanced Defense%. This means that it can sometimes reroll down to a lower value.
The upgrade template of a weapon will display the new stats it will gain upon upgrading along with the values of these stats. This means that an upgrade from a sword with 8 damage to an 11 attack-damage sword will result in the weapon gaining 33% attack damage. The 3% difference does not mean that the weapon will be hit three times less, since it is an absolute number.
A weapon can be rerolled by pressing the green button with arrows that circle in the item menu. This will reroll an item and alter its stats but not reset the weapon's levels, or connect it to an account's status.
Armor
Making a few improvements to your armor can make a huge differences in your ability to survive. Certain sets offer massive boosts to poison or curse, fire or magic resistance, which can make the journey through difficult terrain a breeze. In general, the greater defense you have on your character, the greater health you can get from each point. Therefore, it's a good idea to upgrade your armor.
You can upgrade your armor by visiting any of the Great Fairy Fountains. There are four Great Fairy Fountains in the game and in order to unlock them all, you must complete a side quest that involves the Stable Trotters. After you've completed the main side quest and completed the fountain that corresponds, you can then contact any Great Fairy to open up the menu for upgrading your armor.
The amount of materials needed to upgrade each piece of armor is different. It is possible to use anything between three Red Chuchu jelly and 10 Rupees to upgrade the initial armor piece, and anywhere between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns to upgrade the next one. The Champion Leathers, as an example can be upgraded to a 5 defense rating, which allows you to stay ahead in frigid conditions with a large number of adversaries. The Snowquill Headdress, on the other is able to be upgraded to +20 defense, which means you're able to survive a battle with your comrades.
