Sometimes, when a photo or video opportunity presents itself, it can be gone by the time you've pulled your smartphone out to capture it. A small wearable camera and video recorder named SnapCam from iON is designed to help make sure you don't miss those moments.
The SnapCam is like a cross between the Narrative Clip 2 wearable lifelogging camera and the MeCam wearable video camera. Not only can the SnapCam capture images and video like both of those devices, but it captures video in HD quality and is also able to live stream video to the internet. According to a company spokesperson, the camera is able to live-stream by connecting to a user's smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi P2P and using its internet connection.
Users can attach the SnapCam to a piece of clothing using a clip on its rear, which can be rotated to keep the camera upright. The clip is also magnetic, allowing the camera to be attached to metallic objects. The SnapCam is powered on with a swipe motion across its front and is said to boot up within 0.1 seconds. Users can then tap the device once to take a photo, twice to start recording video or three times to start live-streaming video.
The SnapCam is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2015 with a recommended retail price of US$149.99
The 40 x 40 x 13.5 mm (1.6 x 1.6 x 0.5-in), 30 g (1 oz) camera snaps 8 MP photos and video is recorded at 720p/30 fps. It uses MicroSD or MicroSDHC cards (up to 32 GB) for storage, which the user must buy separately.
iON says the SnapCam's battery, which is charged via USB, will last for seven days on standby, take 5,000 photos in time-lapse mode, offer 2 hours of continuous video recording or one hour of live-streaming. It has a splashproof aluminum housing and is available in grey, black or white, with colorful bumpers that can be added for personalization.
Accompanying apps for use with the Snapcam are available on iOS, Android, Mac and PC. These allow users to save and upload videos and photos to the cloud and to share them on social media sites.
The SnapCam, which is on show at CES in Las Vegas this week, is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2015 for a recommended retail price of US$149.99.
