So, you’ve got smelly Uggs? It is not surprising considering that they are the only enclosed shoes that that requires no socks. Unfortunately, socks play the role of the go-between from the foot to the shoe. When socks are not used, disaster strikes.
As with most shoes that people go commando in, it is quite normal for an unpleasant smell to develop with time. It occurs as a result of a build up of sweat and dead skin particles that rub off after continued use. In this guide, several solutions are available to wipe-out the odor inhabiting your Uggs. In using the following tips, you will increase your chance at eliminating your Ugg-based odor.
Pour 1/4 cup of baking soda into each of your shoe, and shake thoroughly to ensure that the powder gets deep think the wool fiber lining. Let sit for 24 hours and shake out all of the powder contents.
Place two fabric softener sheets at the middle and bottom of the Ugg boots. Set your hair dryer to max heat and aim it down into each foot hole for a minimum of 3 minutes each. Doing this will activate the sheet to release there odor resistant compounds within the woolen interior.
Take activated charcoal briquettes and place them within two pairs of old nylon leggings. Once one legging filled with briquettes deep down into both of the boots for 24-48 hours. This compound works well in neutralizing odor, and thankfully leave zero powder behind. You may wish to keep these nylon enclosed briquettes handy to place within your Uggs when they are not on your feet.
Many authentic Uggs allow you to take the linings out. If you find this to be the case, you can then place them within a sealable container filled partially with baking soda. Upon closing the container, shake thouroughly and let site for a minimum of 24 hours before removing and placing lining back within your shoes.
Many Ugg dealers carry replacement linings for approximately 15 dollars. By purchasing a second pair of linings, and always treating one pair, you will be able to rotate linings to make sure that you never have smelly Uggs.
As a final solution, you can take your Uggs to the dry cleaners every few months. They will be able to clean them and remove the odor, without introducing any moisture based cleaning methods notorious for ruining Uggs.

I coudn’t stand my Uggs – they smelled so bad. Kitty litter helps get rid of the smell! No joke!
It may seem weird – but it really works. Here’s a how to video:http://youtu.be/935gWJrvGR0
This really helped! Also, you can go to the drugstore and get foot powder (if women don’t get)! The foot powder smells like cologne but it still works! Women or men can use it though! 🙂
Great article. We had terrible problems with stinky Ugg boots. I have tried different things. I followed the advice of my podiatrist for using cedar wood soles. Our personal experiences are very positive, it helps very much. I bought the zederna soles and it was not too expensive.

Ugg boots are soft sheepskin-lined boots designed for casual wear. The sheepskin lining can cause the feet to sweat more than usual, especially if the person is walking around in the boots. This can lead to a very unpleasant smell from the Ugg boots. Although this is a problem for all footwear, the natural warmth created by the fleece exacerbates the problem with Uggs. However, there are remedies you can try to remove the stink from Ugg boots.
The insoles of shoes absorb a large amount of the sweat from feet. On a regular basis the insoles should be removed, wiped over with a damp cloth and left to dry naturally. Insoles will last a long time, but should be cleaned regularly to prevent the buildup of bad odors.
Mix together equal amounts of distilled water and vinegar and soak a sponge in it. Starting from the bottom of the sheepskin, scrub the inside of the shoe. The sponge should be wrung out on a regular basis and have additional cleaning mixture applied to it. Once the cleaning is complete use a sponge and just distilled water on the sheepskin to remove the vinegar smell.
Combine equal amounts of baking soda and corn flour and sprinkle inside the boots. A tablespoon of each will be enough for one boot. Leave the mix in the boots overnight and pour out the excess powder.
Never put Ugg boots in the washing machine. This works with sneakers, but will ruin the sheepskin lining of Ugg boots. Regular airing of your Ugg boots outdoors is the best way to stop nasty smells building up.

Uggs, we love em, we hate em, we love to hate em. Whatever your standpoint is regarding the world’s most discussed boots, they are hot.
Both in literal and metaphorical sense. As with all types of footwear that provide a warm, moist environment, sweaty feet are a result.
Do you too have smelly feet in your Uggs? And are you looking for a cure? I bet you do because you don’t want to discard your beloved woolly boots don’t you?
Well here’s what you can do to combat the bad odor your feet and Uggs may produce.
“My feet were so hot, they were soaking. “
Ugg boots are praised because they are so comfortable and warm. But oftentimes they are too warm.
Ugg boots are not waterproof (In Australia, where the popularity of these boots originated, they are only worn indoors)
Because of this water can go inside, for example on rainy days or when stepping into a puddle. When the water goes inside, bacteria can grow which leads to smell.
So avoid as much as possible getting your Uggs wet. If they did get wet, make sure to dry them well before wearing them again. Or use waterproof protective spray for Uggs .
When wet, they may also cause athletics foot, or another type of foot fungus to occur.
“fungus breeds in dark, wet environments – conditions that are usually seen inside the trendy sheepskin boots.”
The Ugg Boot Socks or No Socks Controversy
The Australian manufacturer recommends to wear Uggs without socks, as is advertised on the box. But we all know what happens with bare feet in footwear, sweat and foul odor ensue.
Fake, synthetic wool “Uggs” smell way more than genuine real lambswool Uggs
Do always wear socks in your Uggs if your feet are sweaty. Cotton socks (at least 80%) absorb sweat and foot odor. There are however, better socks .
Socks will also prevent some of the bacteria from nesting in the wool lining inside the boots. If your socks are thin, wear two pairs.
There exists controversy around whether you should wear socks in your Uggs or not. You should however wear socks. It is claimed that because they are sheepskin that breathes you don’t have to wear socks but this is BS.
You will know if you walked the talk and ended up with very sweaty feet.
So repeat after me, I shall wear socks in my Uggs.
To effectively treat smelly feet in your Uggs you must decrease the bacteria already living in your boots.
Sprinkle baking soda in the boots to kill bacteria and simultaneously remove odors.
Wash them how you normally wash them. Make sure to dry them properly. Use rolled up newspapers to hasten the drying process and remove lingering odors.
After washing your Uggs, use this spray . It’s magic. Spray it in your fluffy boots and make sure to reach all the way in the front.
Rocket Pure Natural Shoe Deodorizer is basically a foot spray you can use on footwear too. The blend of essential oils it contains make it truly powerful stuff.
If your UGGs’ insoles have had a tough life you may want to replace them with new ones. Amazon offers sheepskin insoles replacements for UGGs and other footwear. Not all of them are original UGG liners yet many are backed with a rubber insole similar to original Ugg boots.

Thanks for pointing that out. I fixed it.
Lol are you stupid yes they are !!! Lol even the website is called ugg Australia and the description of the website says made in Australia and the tag says mad in Australia , so don’t be stupide of course they are!!
No they are made In America, the ugg brand is American, although ugg boots were invented in Australia
The tag says made in China actually, and yes they are real ones
Uggs are Manufactured by Deckers Outdoor Corporation They have been making them in China for the past 2 years. They used to make them in Australia and New Zealand but have not for 2 years or more. The uggs that are advertised as made in Australia or New Zealand are FAKES. They are not from Deckers Outdoor Corporation.
Actually, what happened is that Uggs were invented in Australia (because of all the sheepskins from the high numbers in the sheep flocks), but the trademark wasn’t adequately protected by the naive business creator and some nasty American stole the trademark and made FAKE copies. The guy who made the Australian originals now can’t use Ugg brand for the real thing in the place they originated.
That same nasty American company now makes them in China, using Australian sheepskins.
If it was French wine, or cheese, there would be a law against this, but we Ozzies are too laid back (lazy) to take things that far.
I hope you’ve smartened up in the last 3 years and improved your attitude. What a twit.
Calling people stupid because they may not know a detail is very rude and unnecessary. If you want to be informative, consider doing it without attacking people, especially when you yourself are incorrect. That’s why people are ignorant, because they are afraid to ask their question without being made to feel insecure . Please keep that in mind and please do your research before providing your input. Thanks.
Also, please stick to the subject matter. This isn’t a forum to spread your peacock feathers and show off to people who not only don’t know you, but aren’t here for that. We were all brought to this forum because we were in search of the same information. So again, respect each other and stay relevant
Duh yes they are read the label! It says “ugg australia”
Um no. They are MADE IN CHINA. And have been for some time now. Just read the actual label. They used to be made in Australia but not anymore!
Oreduce sprey is the only thing that helped me with my uggs! I recommend it anyone who ever faced this problem. It can also be used on any other item you can not wash or treat frequently.
Hi— where can we find this product? I’ve never seen it. Thank you!
I came across your web page searching this problem, odor, that we have started to develop with are UGGS. First off, we do find that UGGS are comfortable and we have worn them without socks. Like you said, we walked the talk and now have developed a really smelly situation in them. My girl friend complained one time about how sweaty they became after walking around indoors at a convention hall. I remember that the heat had been turned up higher then it should be in the building. It was in the 30’s that day outside. After reading our blog and others; we purchased a UV light shoe sanitizer, Oust spray and are wearing a liner socks.
they are made in Vietnam….. read more. the idea came from Australia.
I haven’t worn socks in my uggs for 4 years. I live in a rain forest (Juneau, AK) and they get wet sometimes. They never smell.
We are from Australia and the whole family wears Ugg boots. But we had terrible problems with stinky boots. Thanks for your very helpful tips! I have tried different treatments. I followed your advice for using cedar wood soles. Our personal experiences are very positive, it helps very much. I bought the Zederna soles and it was not too expensive. Thanks again for your article!
If you buy double faced sheepskin you will never get smelly Ugg boots. The reason they smell is because they are split skin with a wool backing glued on inside. Double sided sheepskin is a natural product wool one side suede or leather the other, it is a natural material and it breathes, not like the split skin cheap version which you will never get rid of that small.
If people went to the source at ugg.com, they would learn the facts, not the “alternate facts”, or someone’s opinion, or another’s personal experience. If someone has smelly Uggs, they probably have other smelly shoes and smelly feet. If they walked in the rain or snow, that’s on them. The manufacture strongly recommends not letting your Uggs become wet. If they sweat too much, they probably shouldn’t wear wool lined boots at times when they are more likely to sweat. I have several pairs of Uggs, some for many years, and none of them smell. According to the makers of Uggs, they are designed to be worn without socks.
For the record, Uggs are Australian. However they never trademarked the ‘Ugg’ brand, as far as i know there are now hundreds of Ugg companies using that name, but the original Ugg’s that became a fashion craze in New York for the same shoes we just wear around the house are still made in Australia.
Why would the Australians make ugg when in flaming hot out there
Take a trip Down Under (around July/August) and get familiar with the climate there. Then, you will consider revising your post. Tasmania anyone?
My feet absolutely never stink after being barefoot in UGGs, as long as they are clean. I wash my feet daily, which works for me. Yes. They can come out sweaty after UGGs, but they do not stink.
With little girls it doesn’t even matter if they wear shoes with socks. A little girl will stink up shoes even after washing the feet and wearing clean socks. Stinky cheesy feet is a given for young preteen and teen girls, especially preteens. Trust me – I know!
I’ve had my uggs for many years and I wore them as the manufacturer suggested: barefoot. They only recently started smelling due to me walking barefoot inside my apartment, then putting my uggs on to go out. So, while i kept my feet clean and washed they were not smelly. After putting dirty feet in them, they started to smell. I just bought new insoles to get rid of the smell.

Have you ever been forced to throw out a pair of your beloved UGGs due to an overwhelming bad smell? Never fear! You won’t find this with our quality UGG boots. Our UGGs are manufactured from A-Grade Merino sheepskin. What does that mean, exactly? The magical properties of natural sheepskin prevents any odour from developing - hooray!
Merino sheepskin is odour-resistant due to the unique properties found in its fibres. The wool fibres can absorb large quantities of water vapour, helping keep your skin dry and prevent the build-up of sweat, bacteria and unpleasant smells. When you’re in your UGGs, your feet will be able to breathe and wick away any deposits of sweat as they start to form. Sheepskin also has wonderful ventilation properties, allowing moisture to soon evaporate.
To help keep your UGGs feeling and smelling fresh, there are a few handy tips you should follow.
When you purchase our A-Grade merino sheepskin UGG boots from us here at Ugg Since 1974, there will be no need to throw a pair away when they get smelly! Our UGG boots will stand against any amount of
