Breaking News: Small Plane Crashes in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Lancaster, PA – October 25, 2023 – A small single-engine plane crashed in a rural area of Lancaster County earlier this afternoon, sparking a swift response from local authorities and emergency services. The incident occurred near the town of Lititz, approximately 5 miles north of Lancaster Airport.

According to preliminary reports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft, a Piper PA-28 Cherokee, was en route from Lancaster Airport to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport when it experienced mechanical difficulties. Witnesses reported seeing the plane struggling to maintain altitude before it descended rapidly and crashed into a field near Rock Lititz Boulevard.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes. The pilot, the sole occupant of the aircraft, was found critically injured and was airlifted to Lancaster General Hospital. Their condition remains unknown at this time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported on the ground, and the crash did not damage any structures or vehicles.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and are expected to arrive at the scene to investigate the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that engine failure may have been a factor, but officials have not confirmed this.

Local resident Sarah Miller, who witnessed the crash, described the scene as 'terrifying.' 'I heard a sputtering noise and looked up to see the plane wobbling in the air,' she said. 'It just dropped suddenly, and there was a loud bang. I called 911 right away.'

The crash has temporarily closed a section of Rock Lititz Boulevard as investigators work to secure the area and remove debris. Lancaster Airport officials confirmed that the plane had undergone routine maintenance recently, but they declined to comment further pending the investigation.

This incident marks the second small plane crash in Pennsylvania this month, raising concerns about the safety of private aviation in the region. The NTSB will release a preliminary report within the next few days, but a full investigation could take several months.
