A new longitudinal study examined how college students slut-shame—and found that the practice is as illogical as it is damaging.
While the concept of a "slut" is not new, there has been a resurgence of its use in the context of cyberspace (Megarry, 2014). Studies exploring how and why girls became victims of slut-shaming online found that girls were threatened, coerced, or bribed by males to send revealing images of themselves (Backe et al., 2018; Papp et al., 2015).
High-status women employ slut discourse to assert class advantage, defining themselves as classy rather than trashy, while low-status women express class resentment—deriding rich, bitchy sluts for their exclusivity.
Slut walks emerged as a form of feminist protest early in 2011 when a police officer remarked that women should stop dressing like sluts if they did not want to be victimized, spurring a global mobilization promoting ideas such as "sexual profiling" and "slut shaming."
