Julie Stoddern has resorted to unconventional methods to raise money towards her quest to turn around the lives of addicts and offenders
Get the best and latest crime stories with our Court Insider newsletter
A year ago landlady Julie Stoddern was left battered and bruised after being savagely beaten, but now 12 months on and another court fine for overcrowding later, she is baring all to try to raise money and awareness for the work she does helping get troubled adults and teenagers back on their feet.
For many years award-winner Julie, who runs the service from her home in North Roskear Village in Camborne , has helped to work with former criminals , addicts and people who have found themselves living on the streets.
Julie's work has won her awards , but it has also landed her in court twice, receiving fines for overcrowding at her property.
She speaks of a number of success stories, working with troubled individuals to help get their lives back on track, one of whom was an ex-soldier.
However, over the years she has made a number of desperate appeals for money to help fund her work, saying that the only financial assistance she receives is housing benefit for her tenants, which often arrives late or not at all.
Julie, 49, is now branching out and working with people in other countries. These individuals range from a musician in Ghana she hopes to bring over to perform at the Camborne Music Festival and a Nigerian footballer who she believes can turn professional in the UK and escape poverty.
She has also posed for a number of racy photoshoots, which she hopes will shock the public and the authorities into recognising the struggles she faces to continue her work.
The photos have been taken at various locations around Camborne and Redruth, as well as London, where Julie went for a professional photoshoot.
She said: “It’s been a hell of a year when you look back on it. I’ve been beaten up and prosecuted, but I am going to keep going and need to raise money and awareness.
“I’ve just had a 17-year-old girl here for four months and never had a penny for her. All I get is housing benefit, more or less £67 per head, which doesn’t even cover the mortgage.
“We’ve had so many success stories. I’ve got a 17-year-old lad who was adopted and got kicked out, but now he’s at college and has an apprenticeship at a local company. I’ve also helped loads into their own accommodation and helped get them on course and into work.
“Every day my phone is ringing off the hook with more people needing help and I’ve had interest from all around the world. I’ve just been invited to India with a man who helps homeless people to see what things are like.
“I can’t believe the publicity the modelling is getting; I just need someone to publish it and get it out there. Some of the lads have said I’ve got a better bum than their girlfriends and we’ve sorted a yacht for a photoshoot in Marazion soon. It’s happening everywhere and it’s unbelievable really.”
Julie is particularly keen to hear from anybody willing to offer financial backing to the project or donate a laptop for administration purposes. She’s also hoping to be contacted by landlords who are able to offer accommodation that Julie can help move people into.
One of those Julie has helped is Pippa Mordle, who calls Julie ‘mum’.
She said: “I was a 16-year-old girl when I came to Julie’s. I was having problems and was hanging around at all times in the square of Camborne.
“Someone called her when they found me sleeping in the square. She came out and picked me up early hours of the morning and brought me back to hers, she helped me understand myself and my family and ended up living with her for four months, but no one helped her with any finances of paying for me.
“Nobody wanted to take any responsibility for me. The council wouldn't pay, neither would social services, but she looked after me using her own money without any help.
“I felt so sorry for her as she was putting up with me and all my problems. She was there for me, but because I had no money she never chucked me out.
"Before I lived at her house I really didn't know what she did and just listened to people putting her down, but she has changed my aspects of life completely.
“I now respect myself and my family and I wouldn't have been able to do this without Julie's help and understanding.
“It’s desperate times and I feel it’s about time we need to appluad her for the dedication she has and passion towards us all which she has coped with very well under the circumstances of dealing with suicide, overdoses , death, stealing, taking and smashing cars, being held hostage and beaten up but she is still here trying to give us problem people a chance in life where others just walk away but she is a hell of a woman.”
Stuart Skiton added: “I was on the streets four years ago after a break-up. I had no connections to Cornwall, but got hold of Julie and was there two weeks until she got me in my own room.
“I’ve now got a nice place in Bude and I am enrolled in a higher education course to become a social worker. Everybody is close to being homeless and the family here has helped turn my life around.”
