I still have this release on LP. Now I have it on CD. This is a cool release of VH. Theres some good songs on this title like: "Where Have All The Good Times Gone!" & "Hang'em High" & "Dancing In The Street." & more. This is VH in their heyday. Until the time I've seen Alex's drums from this release was up for sale. I wonder if anyone rich enough to have bought that huge set? This was released in 1982 it still kicks the dirt. (I guess being loud enough?) VH - Diver Down isn't a disappointment. You must like VH from the start? Recommended.

I don't know why this was Eddie's least favorite album. It's classic all the way through. And the pressing is quiet to boot

Van Halen fan all the way, but this was not my favorite. Should you get it? Of course, it's Van Halen (with Roth). They were exploring a lot, Pretty Woman for example and it just was not my favorite Van Halen album. My favorite would be Fair Warning and Van Halen 1.

The early Van Halen remasters so far have been great and this is no exception to the rule. Re-Released on 180g vinyl by Warner Brothers this heavy vinyl is ultra quiet. The cover is made from heavy card stock and the original inner sleeve with artwork is included. Also as an extra bonus the record itself is in an audiophile quality while paper sleeve that is plastic lined. Every care and careful detail has been put into these vinyl re-release projects for Van Halen and they really are amazing. Having Ted Templeman as a producer from 78-84 was a plus for the original audio capture for instruments and voices so the original material was laid down well. With the exception of Pretty Woman. I’m not sure what happened here but I’ve heard this on everything from vinyl, CD, to cassette, to 45 and now the Remastered version and they all sound similar. Maybe they were trying for an AM type retro sound. Don’t get me wrong, this is still the best that that Pretty Woman has ever sounded, it just wasn’t captured well from the start. Everything else is great. Most people prefer the Dave albums that got the most airplay and are the most recognizable like Van Halen 1 and 1984. But the albums from Van Halen 2 to Diver Down all have a similar format and order and are loaded with creativity. This may be the most diverse collection of tunes for this band. It’s certainly entertaining to listen to. The cover tunes are fun and pretty good. Cathedral is an innovative instrumental. Secrets is a wonderful song showing the band’s ability to scale it back a bit. Intruder is the intro to Pretty Woman and it is captured well with a phenomenal sound. Each song just shows off that Van Halen with Dave was capable of so much. If you’re considering it, it’s worth it! A truly wonderful vinyl experience...

i bought the Roth era 2015 remasters (mostly from amazon) and what i got were cds that look exactly like cds from 30+ years ago (with the black cd backing and spine) The back cover of them are a little different that the amazon pics too. through days of research, i have found these are European re-issue remasters. these ARE a remaster, they just DON'T LOOK like it. they will have the new warner label (in bold print) that have the word WARNER above the word RECORDS with an almost circle just to its left. the last 5 digits of the barcode printed on the SIDE SPINE are: Self/Titled: _55243 / VH2: _54918 / WaCF: _54956 / FW: _54970 / DD: _54994 IMO these do sound better than the originals as they are louder, cleaner and clearer, wider soundscape and i can hear greater definition between vocals and other instruments. these might not be perfect but i have heard worse attempts in remasters. JUST BE WARNED THAT THESE WILL LOOK LIKE THE ORIGINALS, CHECK BARCODES BEFORE OPENING AND MAKE SURE IT SAYS 2015 IN THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION BEFORE 'ADDING TO CART'.

Good buy with some of their big hits.

As soon as I spun this, I felt a sharp pain in my neck as my head started banging to the music! My hair grew out (I’m bald) and I had an uncontrollable urge to air guitar! The record arrived on the wings of an angel and was in perfect shape! Thanks! Highly recommend. 10 stars!

Where have all the good times gone!

Is it me or do most hard rockers/metalheads despise "Diver down" and "5150"? I can't seem to get away from it lately, I heard an interview where Eddie Trunk gave very cold views on this album. Why do I love these albums? Mind you I don't just listen to metal. Now without disappearing up my own rectum, most people who put this album down don't play an instrument. I can't imagine Eddie Trunk could ever realize the creative awakening a song like "Cathedral" could possibly have on a blue collar musician. David Lee Roth is pretty much as good as he was ever going to get, by the time this album was released. Seriously, you can put it down all you like, but really take that into consideration. "Where have all the good times gone" is a great album opener, leading into the more fast paced and hard hitting "Hang 'em high". The next track is "Cathedral" which like a lot of Eddie's solos left me with my jaw on the floor the first time I heard it. You kids don't know how lucky you got it. You can probably type in any song on YouTube and learn it on guitar. Damn the amount of songbooks and tabs that inaccurately butchered this song in the days pre-internet, some of you will just never be able to grasp. "Secrets" is a slow but intriguing number, maybe hinting at more laid back numbers on the next album like "I'll wait". "Little guitars" the intro and main song itself is just fantastic. So many amazing intertwining licks and riffs all just locked and loaded and ready to blow your head off. "Dancing in the street" is another cover, but with a very funky vibe. The band are a solid unit here. Whether or not egos or personalities were starting to clash within the camp by this point I do not know. It sounds like they're on fire. But David Lee Roth would only survive one more album before relations deteriorated rapidly. So clearly something was brewing behind the scenes of this historical album. This is on point, fun 80's hard rock. If this isn't in your Van Halen collection, then I'd love to hear why.

VH treads water

The issue with this album is it wasn't planned and this shows in the randomness of the material but with hindsight, Diver Down so shouldn't have come as such a surprise - Van Halen's albums had come almost two-by-two in terms of character, VH & VHII contrasting with Women And Children First and Fair Warning and so something different was never too far around the corner. The artwork makes it look like a live album, which it isn't but coming off the Fair Warning tour, David Lee Roth suggested recording a one-off single, just to keep their name out there. Having heard the result - the Roy Orbison cover, "(Oh) Pretty Woman" b/w the short, jokey "Happy Trails", Warner Bros. demanded more, without giving the band a pause for breath. The album version is the same as the 45, although the instrumental "Intruder" which precedes it acts as a lengthy intro - it's Eddie's only dark moment on this otherwise up-beat release. For the album opener, VH once again plundered the Ray Davies songbook - this time for "Where Have All The Good Times Gone!". The answer is ... nowhere - they're right here, right now but there are only 4 original songs (+ 3 short instrumentals). If having 5 cover versions suggested this was a band treading water, Diver Down would be an important stepping-stone to greater mainstream commercial success with the band's 1983 release - 1984. "Jump" from that album would be something of a shock to listeners of Terry Wogan's Radio 2 breakfast show - who had been weaned on a VH diet of Diver Down's "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)", a jokey jazzy number which features Jan (dad) Van Halen on clarinet. And despite the passage of time, to me this remastered CD sounds as fresh as when I bought the album back in 1982.   Although Diver Down is a mixed bag compared to Van Halen's previous output, it was the perfect antidote to the brilliant darkness of Fair Warning. There is much emphasis on humour, courtesy of DLR (that's singer David Lee Roth - not the Docklands Light Railway) and this is very much the softer side to VH. Although Eddie had exerted himself over the last two albums, Dave Lee Roth and producer Ted Templeman took the opportunity to take hold of the reins again, in search of a hit single, hence also the Motown and Jazz covers alongside the handful of originals - one of which, the hard-rocking "Hang 'em High", dated back to before the first album. There's a great guitar instrumental again from Eddie, "Cathedral" (don't try this at home), "The Full Bug" is VH at its bluesiest - with DLR on acoustic guitar and blues harp (!) and "Secrets" has the band at it's most tuneful and laid-back. "Little Guitars" has a great intro and the song itself again shows the band's more playful side - never being confined by heavy metal convention. Eddie's guitar playing is - well, can any more be said on the subject? Electric, acoustic, steel strung, nylon, 6 string, 12 string, full size or little guitars - he can do no wrong and it's not only the lead work; his rhythm playing is equally unsurpassed (this was never really recognised at the time, his lead playing was so dynamic).  Whilst it lacks the focus of earlier works, Diver Down is still a very enjoyable album. The 2000 remaster has a fold-out inlay with the original album artwork. If you're new to VH, don't bother with the "Best Of Both Worlds" compilation - it's a confused listen - far better to start from the beginning, go on from there and see for yourself how the band progressed. There really is something for everyone if you like American west-coast heavy rock, with exceptional guitar and a frequent sense of humour. And if you like the Sammy Hagar-era version of Van Halen, don't overlook his earlier solo work ... and the first Montrose album! Equally, if you like Diamond Dave's style - check out his solo work too.

Magnificent Band

What can you say about Van Halen? A combination of humour and grit; hardcore dynamics and pop; innovation with accessibility. They could kick you in the guts, and still make you smile. Their sound was so often imitated, but never equalled. I don't think Diver Down is their most appreciated album, but I do declare it is a bonzer collection of songs that sends the listener like a motherlode. I'd buy it if I were you.

Great music!

CD arrived on time, in good condition. Item is new. One of my favorite bands from back in the days. I have their albums on vinyl, but don't have a record player. Tracks on this one are so uplifting, (esp. dancing in the street')! Proper rock, I love it.

Dropping to the muff.

An album with the usual fun and frolic's of Dave Lee Roth's fantasy world of rock and roll. A mixture of styles and sounds of a great band being playful and having fun with it at the same time. A loose album with equally simple infectious groove of material from a long established band. One quirky but silly track you just got to love to bits with its sing a long tune is the fun loving Happy Trails. A classic album from a classic fun playful band.
