I expected this book to be based on many historical facts, but it is very clinical. Dry reading. I am a very avid reader, and just could not get into reading this. I really enjoy reading historical books, both fiction and non-fiction, but this was such a boring read.

In this effort, Don Winslow takes the reader back to the glory days of Ancient Rome. The living is harsh and violent by today’s standards, but the prizes are definitely more easily obtainable as the women know their place and are ready to please. As the novel opens, Marcus (the narrator) is at the opulent home of Quintus Licus, a rich merchant in the city of Rome. Quintus is renowned for his parties and his large wife, Lydia, is known for her sexual raids on the many young military men that attend the parties. Fortunately, since Lydia is occupied, Marcus is spared from her affections. Instead, Marcus is treated to a multi page and very detailed ...from one of the rich merchant’s many slave girls. ...Marcus is an unhappy man. He hates being posted to Rome, which not only bores him, but also stretches his meager income further than it can go. He hates the camp life in Rome and wants to see some action. After watching a lovely blonde goddess being sold from the slave caravan, Marcus becomes inspired. He decides to ask to be reposted from Rome and wants to go North into hostile territory and claim a blond goddess of his own as well as some plunder. He decides to ask to be posted to Gaul—the frontier. He is posted to a garrison by the name of Bernesium. There he will be the only officer in charge of 200 men. Bernesium has its own very rich merchant in the form of Asinus Gratius. Gratius, among other things, supplies the whores to the troops of the Garrison and reserves some very special ones for use by V.I. P.’s such as Marcus. What follows is the usual good work from Don Winslow. Great descriptions of the sights and sounds and plenty of very hot sexual action. If you are into period pieces, or historical works, this is definitely one to ad to your collection. It certainly would have made studying world history all those years ago much more interesting!

Rome was definitely a rich mans [prostitute] in days of yore! I love historical erotica and what better setting than this decadent city, insatiable for more flesh and the delights they bring? A battle weary soldgier, Marcus, spends the night carousing at the palatial estate of a fabulously wealthy merchant. Lounging on silken pillows, he gives himself up to beautiful , specially trained sex slaves. Fabulous orgies abound throughout. And Marcus travels north on a quest for a unique blonde female barbarian that has become his obsession. Along the way, he encounters the delightfully kinky Gratius, who supplies masterfully skilled [prostitute] to the army, local merchants, and prominent politicians while he partakes of the `choicest' slaves in his villa of pleasure, sharing all he knows with Marcus. From rousing romps in steams rooms and simmering Roman baths that give `steamy' new meaning, to well-oiled female gladiators engaged in battles of orgasmic proportions and the `training' of slave girls in the sexual submission, you name it-- it's in this book! There is not one hot stone left unturned. Once again, master eroticist Don Winslow delvers the best.

Poor Marcos, after seeing a tall willfull blond haired blue eyed Nordic slave sold to the wealthy in Rome, he decides to request a transfer to the Northern hinterlands so that he can get himself one of those beauties to bring home. The author spends considerable time describing the orgiastic feasts in the harems of the slave masters, and, of course the expected disciplinary proceedures for tose young girls that may not be as happy as expected in their new lives as sex slaves .... I guess I got the feeling that very few of the characters had much depth or inner feelings and that they all just kind or went through the motions ... thats what takes the book from 5 star erotica to 3 star porn .... The book itself is 178 pages and an added bonus in my edition has some 80 pages of short erotic stories .....

pretty good and nice historical settings

I thoght to read a story written by the "right" winslow but I was wrong. anyway I tried to read the book but I could not manage to. I quitted at page twenty. It should be an erotic novel, I found it just boring

sono stato stupido

pensavo fosse un romanzo dell' altro Winslow. invece no. dovrebbe essere un libro erotico, l' ho trovato solo noioso e dopo 20 pagine in cui non succede nulla è finito nel recupero della carta

Who is Don Julian Winslow? Hard to say; but I can tell you who he is NOT. He is not Don Winslow who writes whodunits for a living. In a case of bad timing (for Don Winslow), Don Julian Winslow (aka Don Winslow - a pen name) emerged in the golden age of erotic fiction and had established an international reputation as a writer of quality erotica. Then along came the author with birthright to the very name and, as he struggled to become a literary icon in his chosen genre, he found to his alarm that people kept asking him if he still wrote those "dirty books." One can only sympathize with a writer who tries so hard to be taken seriously, only to find his reputation soiled by a common pornographer! And so it goes. Life is unfair.
And so we can tell you dear reader that Don Julian Winslow is an internationally best-selling author who has written some 20 books of erotic fiction. Hollis Compton, critic for New Age Publications, has characterized Winslow's work as "pure porn, unpretentious...and masterfully done." (Contact: dwin2001@gmail.com).
From time to time we need to be reminded about the place of erotic literature in our lives. That place was summarized best by Michael Perkins, in his "The Secret Record":
...These are some of the arguments for an intelligent reading of erotic literature and for its acceptance as a legitimate genre of writing, but the most important is pleasure, which is to say: what is wrong with reading a book for the purpose of both physical and mental stimulation? And what is aroused in us by a reading of the classics but the very basic emotions of pity, sympathy, love and terror? Why do we forbid ourselves sexual arousal when we read?"
And finally I leave you with the words of that superb actress Tiffany Clark, who in her role as Renee in "Hot Dreams" so well encapsulates my view of the whole thing:

At first slaves were the men and
women taken prisoner as Rome conquered more and more territory. Their
children helped ensure a continuing supply. Citizens at the bottom of
the socio-economic ladder who got so far into debt they could not get out
lost their freedom and became slaves along with all members of their
families. Unwanted children in Rome, especially girls, were abandoned
at birth: many were picked up by passers-by and sold as slaves.
The word conjures up images of men
and women chained to their post and worked to death under the threat of a
beating. One need only look at the silver mines of Athens to know that
this did indeed happen, and many slaves in Rome were trained for the one
glorious moment they fought and died as gladiators. Life was harsh in
the early days of the Republic but gradually improved as Romans realized how
much more work they could get from a healthy, well treated slave. In
cities during the Empire slaves often went out on their own and citizens
complained that they were unable to tell the difference. Proposals to
have them dress differently were always rejected for fear that they would
realize how numerous they were and plot rebellion.
Unfortunately most of our evidence
for the daily life of slaves, especially that of women, comes to us through
the eyes of the owners. Conditions varied considerably according to
the humanity of the master and there can be no doubt that talented slaves
were better treated than their unskilled brothers and sisters, and slaves in
the homes of the upper class may well have had a very pleasant life.
Female slaves were at the mercy of
predatory masters. Wives protested and society expressed disapproval
(albeit in a very minor way), but the law was on the side of the errant
husband. Monogamy was the stated ideal in Rome, but its achievement was
another thing entirely. A child born of a slave by her master was a
slave. The master could free his child, but he could not acknowledge
or adopt it: law and society was adamant on this point.
An Upper class Roman family had
dozens, or even hundreds, of slaves; a middle-class family would have had
one to three, and even a prosperous member of the working class might have
had one. Female slaves usually worked as servants, perhaps as personal maids
to the Mistress or as housekeepers, etc.
Slaves could not legally marry, but
in the Empire many masters with large holdings permitted some to pair up.
Any offspring of such unions were slaves and this became a recognized way of
increasing the number. Slave families could be split up if the master
decided to sell one member and not another.
As an incentive some slaves
received a wage and could accumulate it to buy their freedom. Some
masters granted freedom in their will. Slaves who were manumitted
(freed) became freedmen or freedwomen, not citizens, but they could marry
and their children would be citizens. Freed people made up about five
percent of the population of Rome, but since the status lasted only a single
generation there were no dynasties of freed families.
Slaves were never granted their
freedom without also having the means to support themselves. Some were
given a small plot of land, while others were set up as shop keepers and
artisans. Undoubtedly a woman slave needed a male partner in order to meet
the requirement of being able to support herself. The freedman or
freedwoman was expected to remain loyal to the former master and he in his
turn was expected to provide ongoing support in time of need. Freedom
was not a way of getting rid of a slave that was too old or sick to work.
Much to the disgust of lower class citizens, freed people sometimes achieved
considerable wealth.
