Early-twentieth-century African American scholars added their perspectives on slavery, and on slave breeding in particular, at a time when white Americans were in the midst of cultivating an extraordinarily distorted image of antebellum slavery.
In short, slaves were money. The Sublettes take readers through the strategic closing of the slave trade in 1808 to the Emancipation Proclamation, which "decommissioned the capitalized womb" and sanctioned armed resistance during the Civil War. In Virginia, slaveowners competed with South Carolina over African importation.
With the slave trade open and the influx of "saltwater slaves" nearly continuous, enslaved people in the lowland had great difficulty forming families and reproducing themselves.
Slaves were also shipped by railroad, packed in boxcars, or sent by stagecoach. The slave breeding farms are mostly left out of the history books except for those that deny their existence.
