They really should have called Hearthfires Oblivion 2: Return of the potato face!
First a quick recap of how this works and what we expect:
Be respectful. These discussions will open the floor to a lot of different opinions of what is fun/good/necessary/etc. Debate those conflicts of interest with respect and maturity...the nicer you are to your fellow modders, the more willing everyone is to help each other :)
Please keep the mods listed as relevant to the topic is possible . Some topics are a bit broad and people can go about them in pretty creative ways, but try to use common sense.
We ask that when suggesting a mod for the discussion list at hand that you please provide a link to the mod, and a brief description of what it does, why it fits the list, what the benefits/drawbacks are. These can range from incredibly popular mods to mods that you think are under-appreciated...don't be ashamed to just go for a major one though...this is a discussion and those should definitely be part of it.
If there's one thing Skyrim did right, it's reinforcing the fact that the people of Tamriel are not, in fact, born full-sized. If there's one thing it did wrong, it was presenting the kids as potato-faced nuisances. Adorable, but ugly.
What mods do you use to improve on kids? Here's a few to start us off:
Skyrim Children Overhaul . This is my favorite mod for making kids look better. They still look adorably grubby instead of having airbrushed hair, and it adds a bunch of kids of all the other, non-nord races! Which is awesome! Unfortunately because of the way it's set up, it needs patches for all mods that add kids or you get... shudder ... some kind of weird daedra. One of my distant goals is to rework SCO so that all the kids it does alter are standalone - Basically convert it from "how EEO works" to "how Bijin works." I know how to do it, I just... haven't found the time.
Expanded Children Gifts increases the number of things you can give your little darlings, such as books, shields, dwemer artifacts... to make sure they grow up into a strong dovahkiiid!
Killable Children . There are dozens of mods that do this. I don't know if this is the best, but it's the top hit on google. I also don't know why you'd want to do that. But apparently people do.
What mods do you use to enhance the child-rearing aspect of Skyrim?
Was I the only one expecting mods for children that would remove the violence or something?
Thomas the Tank dragons everywhere. Very Kid-friendly.
There was one like that a while back, it removed the Dark Brotherhood and turned the aggro animals peaceful and such. Unfortunately it seems to have been deleted.
RS Children Overhaul hands down my favorite child appearance overhaul.
RS Children Patches a few patches, this one includes patches for; Interesting NPCs, Inconsequential NPCs, ETaC *, and Wyrmstooth. *Users should instead download the ETaC patch included in ETaC's patches.
Moon and Star - RS Children Patch patch for RS and Moon and Star.
RS Children Overhaul USLEEP Patch since RS hasn't been updated for USLEEP yet rentak has been kind enough to carry forward some changes with this replacement esp. The original RS Children still needs to be installed, just let this esp overwrite the stuff from RS.
Misc. RS Children Patches This one includes patches for Helgen Reborn and The Golden Crossroads.
One of the admittedly powerful draws of an overhaul like Skyrim Children Overhaul is the fact that they add in non-human children. Well now there are a number of Mer and Beast children which fit right in with the RS Children Overhaul.
Aymar and friends - Adoptable Elven Children adds 1 Dunmer boy, 1 Altmer girl, twin Bosmer children 1 boy and 1 girl, and a boy and a girl Orsimer.
Tokkimoon's More Adoptable Children while a little more anime-ish than RS Children it fits the Mer look fairly well. It adds 1 Bosmer girl, 1 Orsimer girl, 1 Dunmer boy, and twin Altmer children a boy and a girl.
KhajiitChild Maisha adds a sweet little Khajiit girl for you to adopt.
My little kitty Ma-Rakha-Khajiit boy adds a darling Khajiit boy for you to adopt.
My little hatchling Ram-Ku-Argonian boy adds a feisty young Argonian boy for you to take under your wing, who can even be a good companion if you have mods which allow children to follow you.
Adoptable Argonian Hatchling - Chases-Starlight adds a young Argonian girl who would love for you to adopt her.
I can't recommend Prince and The Pauper enough, especially with the optional Gamwich textures.
The reason I don't use P&P is because I do not understand the instructions. In case you wondering English is my 3rd language, and sometimes I can't understand English with bad grammar.
I should probably try out P&P again, haven't had the chance to put it into a new playthrough yet. I always had some trouble with it, sigh.
So glad Tokkimoon put her mod up again. Her creations are pretty damn adorable.
I had no idea there was a uSLEEP patch, thanks for posting :D
Dressed Hearthfire Doll : this new mod is literary the mod for kids!
Skyrim Toy Story : a good assortment of craftable toys/decor for your kid's room.
I just finished manually adding CCOR sorting to these.
They're really nice models. I like the little dragons.
Skyrim Children Overhaul is my favorite too. RS Children is good as well, though I don't like all the hairstyles and a lot of the kids look like they're giving me the evil eye, but it works with the next two mods, so it's the one I'm currently using.
Armor and Clothing for Kids and Children Fight Back . While I'm not taking my kids into dwemer ruins with me, I do like taking them for hunting trips. (Thanks for the tip, Fadingsignal!) But even if you don't plan to do that, this makes it so you can take them with you for non-combat reasons. Ever wanted your kid to get to see High Hrothgar, take them to Solitude for the holiday, or wish you could show them Solstheim? Now you can!
If you want to adopt more kids, there's Hearthfire Multiple Adoptions that allows you to adopt more children and move them into a mod added home, but if you want to play with a vanilla home, Soupdragon1234 has the most awesome mods for vanilla player homes (based off the TNF series) that allow you have up to six children in a vanilla home.
I keep installing Hearthfire Multiple Adoptions on my modlists ... but I don't think I've ever actually gotten around to using it on playthrough. Restartitis is a terrible thing.
Given the way some of the children act, it isn't exactly immersion-breaking for them to be giving you the evil eye.
Kidmer - Adoptable Elf Children : Adds adoptable Altmer, Dunmer, Bosmer and Orc children, vanilla style .
It's incompatible with RS Children , but works well + looks better with a vanilla texture replacer such as RUSTIC CHILDREN .
Rustic children deserves a lot more attention. It is a simple, esp free texture replacer for children. It does a really good job at making the children look very decent and it fits well with most male/female texture overhauls.
Obviously, Gamwich is an incredible mod author, so this shouldn't be a surprise :P.
Kidmer and Rustic Children were the first thing to spring to mind for me, too. The only kid makeover mods I've actually ever used, as I definitely prefer them a little more "vanilla."
I'm surprised no one else has posted Skykids by en_hawk of LoversLab. It hasn't been updated in a long time (a year or so, I think?), but with the Skykids Child NPC Replacer Alternative by SpyderArachnid (also of LoversLab), I think it's my most preferred visual overhaul for children. Not only do the children look good, but the mod also gives you playable child races for the mer and beastmen, in addition to the humans.
Some other children mods I'd recommend using in conjunction with Skykids:
Skykids NPC Files by arkayn71 : patches for many popular mods in the default Skykids style, along with a few hostile npc plugins
Disparity - Skykids Patch by DemongelRex : on the tin
Standalone Babette Replacer for Skykids by littlefuzzydude : again, on the tin; in the original Skykids style and, personally, not to my taste. (I use a custom Babette replacer.)
I'm not crazy about the Skykids style, but variety is never a bad thing.
Well, a lot of the more well known ones have already been mentioned, & I've almost tried them all, so here's my list of great child related mods that are underrated in my opinion:
Dragons Keep - My own mod, because it gives an immersive & gratifying way to take care of all the orphaned kids that you can't adopt. It's the only mod that lets you recruit abandoned orphans to become students at a pretty nice boarding school, where they will interact with other students, attend classes, play at recess, etc. It also serves as a fairly decent player home, but that is all secondary to allowing the children to have what is basically a kids version of the College of Winterhold. Think Harry Potter meets Skyrim :)
Dovahkinder Complete - This is the latest child clothing mod that FINALLY puts almost all the child outfits mods out there into a singe mod that does not make them replacers, bringing the total amount of child outfits to 24. It includes the best outfits from Prince & Pauper & Dovahkinder Collection .
Skyrim Child Overhaul - The first child overhaul to finally try to give each kid a unique face that doesn't stray so far from vanilla that it looks out of place. Now a modder's resource, so hopefully someone will pick up where he left off & add in beast race children.
Make any child your follower - As the name implies, but they don't count against your follower count, & when you release them, they go back home.
Rustic Children - better looking body & face textures for the vanilla children. They still all look the same, but better.

Better males - Beautiful nudes and faces - New hairstyles at Skyrim ...
Best mods for.... kids ! : skyrimmods

It’s not everyday you stumble upon a mod that gives you the chance of conceiving a fully functional child. Well, today we’ll be discussing one that gives you the cutest boy that we meet in the Skyrim Romance Mod: Julian. That baby you get to carry in your character’s tummy for “nine months” [which literally took me an hour and a half to conceive but~] who then is born to be your bouncing baby boy is given the ‘Julian’ by Bishop, to honor his brother Jules. You then get the chance to go through different dialogues, asking Bishop how he and your son are doing, and where you’re able to select a dialogue to skip 6 years to Julian being, ta-da~ six years old!
Julian is one of the very first children NPC’s out there that is fully voiced in a mod. He is voiced by [the quite adorable] Jaren Machado.
Julian comes with many amazing little features: from all of the options you get to go through when your character is pregnant, to seeing how Bishop is taking up being a father when Julian is born, and finally, Julian being a young boy, dishing out sass almost fiercer than Bishop himself!
When you first meet Julian as a healthy six-year-old, you proceed to an intimate cutscene where he and Bishop are bonding. As Bishop is teaching his son to hunt for the first time, you get the first of many in-depth glimpses of the sweet moments between your sassy child and brooding ranger. You’ll soon see that Julian has no trouble whatsoever dishing the sass back to his father.
Bishop: Hah! You would, maybe. But a man dying from the angry Thu’um of his wife isn’t particularly honor-worthy.
Julian: You’re just saying that because you don’t believe in honor, you milk-drinker.
Bishop:Watch your mouth, you were drinking milk yourself five minutes ago.
Julian comes with over 16 different individual, heart-melting greetings for your Dragonborn upon your arrival home. There are also several cutscenes with Bishop, your Dragonborn, and Julian spending time together. A personal favorite of mine is one where you tell Julian a story before he goes to bed, complete with multiple choices of how the story reads while Julian lays in bed listening.
Another amazing addition to your Honeymoon Cottage, that is almost amazing as Julian himself, is his bedroom. From the cute plushies and toys, to the adorable drawings he has of you and his father scattered about, Julian’s room is just perfect for the son of the Dragonborn.
Julian loves to draw and a favorite part of his character design, by many people, is the random drawings he has hanging in his bedroom, as well as the ones he’ll give to your Dragonborn when they come home and speak to him.
Julian is a very savvy and observant child. He has a ton of reactions to your Dragonborn, like if your character is sneaking, if they are wounded or diseased, even if you’re walking around naked! [Trust me it’s funny.] He has reactions for almost anything, all the way down to when your Dragonborn become the Thieves Guild Master.
The options with Julian are seemingly endless and there is never a dull moment in your Dragonborn’s home now that he’s arrived. From having Julian give Eira a bath [and catching him lie about it], to the way he tries to coax you into giving him a gift by telling you your eyes are prettier than Bishop’s! Julian will quickly warm your heart; and, f or many, to the point that they’ll never want to leave him behind.
