Reserved for only the most iconic and flawless pop culture idols, the term “skinny legend” is one of the hottest crazes to hit social media. The phrase has been especially trendy on Twitter, where it is used by “ stans ” to affectionately describe their favorite celebrities. Forget telling your favorite stars to “ delete it, fat .” A new, thinner sheriff is in town.
Despite only recently gaining recognition, the phrase can actually be traced back to the glory days of “ Gangnam Style ” and #YOLO, where it was used infrequently to refer to a celebrity’s slender figure. Although it gradually moved away from this definition and now refers to one’s “iconic” status, regardless of their actual physical fitness, “skinny legend” has come under fire for its body-focused language and accompanying memes.
No matter the controversy, skinny legends continues to flood feeds and timelines across social media.
Although its exact origins remain a mystery, the term used in its modern definition can be found on Twitter as early as 2012. Not to be confused with Ghanaian musician Skinny Legend, the seeds of “skinny legend” as we know it today were laid by various “regular” users who sporadically incorporated the term into their tweets in positive or aspirational ways.
As stan culture rose in popularity, so did the phrase. The “original” skinny legend was none other than pop singer Christina Aguilera, who received the honor in early 2014 (though one user referred to her as a “ skinny queen ” in 2012). Although a few of the tweets alluded to her physical appearance, it is still unclear whether the phrase was directly addressing weight or body image.

Stans of other fandoms quickly caught onto the trend and adopted it for their own celebrities, mostly female pop stars such as Demi Lovato and Britney Spears. Much like the endearing “ mom ” moniker, the new slang flooded timelines everywhere at the hands of young fans and their keyboards.

According to Google Trends , “skinny legend” hit its peak as a search term in late May.
The surging popularity of the phrase may have to do with its latest manifestation: the snake edit . Users added a unique flair to the term with bizarrely photoshopped images of their favorite celebrities, distorted in such a way that their bodies looked twisted and surreal. The most widely shared snake edits circulated in early 2018 but can be seen as far back as 2016. A “skinny” photo of Adele was posted in a May 2016 forum thread on Classic ATRL .

Mariah Carey is perhaps the celebrity most heavily associated with “skinny legend,” possibly due to a reply tweet that went viral in February 2017.

An Urban Dictionary definition was added shortly after in May. It defines “skinny legend” as a “phrase used by a social media sub-group called ‘stans.’ It is commonly used to refer to celebrities as Mariah Carey who are glamorous and talented, no matter their weight. It is also used ironically to refer to cute animals, people, objects etc. Twitter trolls use it often in their memes.”
As always, nothing remains unproblematic. Once a term of affection, “skinny legend” has now become a target for those who say it promotes harmful ideas about body image and feeds into diet culture. An article from Revelist criticized the phrase for seemingly equating thinness with importance and pointed out that users were also utilizing the term to refer to themselves and their eating habits.

However, some people say it is a subversive way to mock the media’s standards of beauty by turning the ideal on its head. Others claim the term is a fun expression and actually refers to one’s confidence rather than body image.

Skinny Legend is internet slang used by stans to describe the celebrity that is the focus of their fandom . The phrase is meant as a term of endearment among stans, meant to indicate that the celebrity they stan for is flawless.
While it's unclear where exactly the slang term started, one of the earliest known posts to use the phrase as a term of endearment towards a celebrity was posted August 17th, 2015 to Twitter by user @minxiepop [1] about Christina Aguilera (shown below).
The phrase appeared over the following months particularly in reference to Demi Lovato . By July of 2016, the phrase saw more use with regards to Mariah Carey. On July 29th, 2016, Twitter user @C0UxPERX2 tweeted a photoshopped version of Carey, referring to her as a "skinny legend" (shown below).
On November 30th, 2016, a thread was posted to ATRL Classic [2] debating if a person's favorite celebrity was a skinny legend. On February 15th, 2017, Twitter user @terryono420 [6] responded to a tweet by Tomi Lahren stating "Mariah is skinny. Fuck blue lives." The tweet gained over 6,800 retweets (shown below) and 14,000 likes. This solidified a connection between Mariah Carey and the phrase "Skinny Legend."
On May 27th, 2017, the phrase was added to Urban Dictionary (shown below). [3]
On August 10th, 2017, Twitter user @lindxeyy tweeted a video of her screaming "Skinny" at Lady Gaga during a concert and Gaga looking surprised. The tweet gained 13,000 retweets and 36,000 likes (shown below).

A question about the video was posted to /r/OutOfTheLoop [5] the same day. The video was covered by Buzzfeed [4] on August 28th. Several photoshops of Carey making her look exceptionally skinny began circulating within the fandom as well. On January 31st, 2018, blog Revelist [7] wrote about the slang term, calling it problematic .

Skinny Legend refers to a popular online slang expression, especially used by Stans (hardcore fans) of celebrities.
The phrase is used by these devoted followers of artists and public personalities to express their love for them, through complimenting their physical appearance.
What's the origin of Skinny Legend ?
While the exact origins of the expression are not known, it started emerging on Twitter in the summer of 2015, initially in relation to Christina Aguilera, then “skinny legend’s” popularity would shift to Demi Lovato .
By the summer of 2016, fans of Mariah Carey would also take up the phrase in their tweets.
By 2017, discussions would start emerging on the use of “skinny legend” on various sites like ATRL .
Despite this, the trend would remain viral on Twitter , with users applying the phrase both seriously and sarcastically, pairing it with obvious photoshop edits of celebrities.
“Skinny legend” was first defined on Urban Dictionary on May 27 th , 2017, with numerous entries having been written since.
The expression would reach a wider audience in 2018, as it would break out of Twitter on to other platforms like Reddit and tabloid magazines.

I could say things like "musical genius", "comedy queen", "biological woman". I'm not, but I could. Trixie brings humor, awkward grace & fumbling dignity to this special. Her timing is impeccable. Her vocal chops are the real deal. And don't you dare argue with the musical talents of a man in a wig who as also appeared on the cover of Autoharp Quarterly. Seriously. That's how amazing she is! 1. Buy this. 2. Play this. 3. Laugh. 4. Tap your toes a little. 5. Cringe but then laugh harder. 6. Repeat steps 2-6 in any order you see fit.

The oh-so-woke audience wanted to laugh at many many many truly funny jokes but apparently they weren't allowed. Trixie's great and talented anyways though, and her performance is better than the audience's response.
