Long or short, plump or thin, dark or pale, wrinkly or smooth—no two labia look exactly the same, says Dr. Stephanie Romero, an gynae at USF Health in Tampa, Florida.
In case you’re not familiar with the anatomical terms, the inner and outer folds of your vulva are called the labia majora and labia minora.
The majora are the outer lips (the ones that grow hair) while the minora are the inner lips, which connect to the clitoral hood .
The majora typically at least partially envelop the labia minora. Yes, your vagina is complex.
Unfortunately, as more women are shaving and waxing their pubic hair, they’re also becoming increasingly concerned about whether their labia are normal, explains Dr. Lauren Streicher, an gynae in Chicago and the medical director of the Center for Sexual Medicine and Menopause at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
“It used to be that nobody could see their labia and they never paid any attention [to it], and now everyone is looking and inspecting,” she says. “And of course, everyone thinks their labia isn’t as pretty as someone else’s labia.”
Meanwhile, labiaplasties—plastic surgery to alter the labia minora and/or majora—are on the rise, reports the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Currently, more than 12,000 procedures are performed by ASPS members per year, a 39 percent increase from previous years. But before rushing to alter your lady parts, understand that almost all shapes, sizes, textures, and colours of labia are normal and healthy.
To prove our point, we talked to top gynaes—and got creative in the drawing room—to share explanations and illustrations of what “normal” labia look like. And guess what? Yours is undoubtedly on the list.
If your tour de vaginas is limited to textbooks and porn, this type —in which the labia majora, or the outer lips, neatly envelope the labia minora, clitoris, and vaginal opening—is likely what you assume all normal labia look like. (Yes, it kind of resembles a fortune cookie.)
And when most women seek out labiaplasties, this is the look they are going for, says Dr. Karen Horton, a plastic surgeon in San Francisco who specializes in female cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, including labiaplasty. But while this type is common, it’s certainly not universal—or even universally desired, Horton says. “Not everyone wants Barbie’s [smooth area],” she says.
Just like some women sport thicker middles and others carry more junk in the trunk, some women’s outer lips pack extra padding.
“One of the complaints I get is, ‘It’s too poofy,’” Horton says, which can make some women self-conscious about bulges in, say, yoga pants. She notes that labia majora reduction surgeries are actually a thing. But, there are other solutions: Camelflage, for example, is brand of undies with special sewn-in liners that fight the dreaded camel toe.
Some women’s labia majora are naturally thinner, and many women’s labia majora become thinner post-menopause due to hormonal changes, experts say.
But while Horton says some ladies complain about looking deflated—in Asia, there’s even a trend toward surgeries that plump them up your lady lips—there’s no harm in having less meat there, experts say. “If someone were to have no labia, would they have medical problems as a result of it? No. would they have painful sex as a result of it? No. Would they be dysfunctional? No.” Streicher says.
Sometimes, the labia minora aren’t so, well, minor, and one or both protrude beyond the labia majora. While this shape is normal, it tends to be the one that bothers women most.
“Sometimes their labia gets caught, like when they’re trying to have sex and it kind of gets folded up.
"Sometimes it’s uncomfortable, like when they’re riding a bike,” Streicher says. “Sometimes, when [they pee,] instead of it coming straight out, it sprays all over the place.” These kinds of issues can lead some women to seek labiaplasties, which are relatively minor surgeries, but not without risk, Streicher says. Bleeding, scarring, and uncomfortable intercourse can, in rare cases, result.
“If you look at a head-on picture of the labia, what you typically see is that the labia start at the top and then extend all the way down to the bottom of the vaginal opening—well not everybody has that,” Streicher says. “In some women, it only comes down three-quarters of the way or even halfway every once in a while.” Again, there’s no functional reason to worry about it.
If you consider that the labia majora are basically an extension of the inner thighs and buttocks, it’s kind of surprising that they’re a totally different color than the rest of your skin. “Some people can be gray, some can be pink,” Romero says.
The colour can also change, typically veering toward a darker shade, after pregnancy, thanks to hormones, Streicher adds. Your labia minora can be dramatically darker than the rest of your lady parts too. That too, she says, is “totally normal.” Phew.

Whether you like it or not, labia cleavage is here to stay! Stars like NeNe Leakes, Tammy Rivera, and a slew of Instagram models have jumped on board to show off their vajayjay in crotch-hugging swimwear, leaving very little to the imagination.
The fabric scrapes on your skin when you wear clothing that is excessively tight, destroying the barrier that protects your derma from infections.
The same logic applies to suffocating swimwear as it does to suffocating wardrobe decisions in general.
Right now, vagina is fashionable. It’s always been that way since God created woman, not in the Janet Jackson “You want to smell my punani?” type of way, but in the sense that it’s a fashion trend.
Labia cleavage is the latest aesthetic that’s sweeping the bathing suit industry (along with pudendal clefts) like wildfire these days. It’s the trend that turns high-leg bikini bottoms into the swimming equivalent of mom jeans, and it’s here to stay, according to Instagram.
Curve-hugging clothing not only damages your protective barrier, but it also produces more sweat, which creates an environment for viral, fungal, and bacterial illnesses like folliculitis, which causes hair follicles to transform into nasty red pimples. Yuck!
A warm, moist swimsuit bottom, on the other hand, provides an ideal environment for yeast and bacterial infections.
Synthetic fabrics like nylon, rayon, and spandex, according to Owen Montgomery, M.D., chairman of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, can trap moisture in place, increasing your risk of infection (over and over), Montgomery tells Cosmopolitan.
Not to mention the maintenance, which is completely out of hand! That’s right, ladies, you’ll need to consult a “waxpert” if you want to rock this style.
You’ll almost certainly require a Brazilian wax. At popular spas, technicians will completely remove hair from the buttocks and adjacent to the anus, perineum, and vulva for as little as $40 for front to back.
At the Video Awards in Toronto in June 2014, catwalk favorite Kendall Jenner wore a cream dress with two eye-wateringly high splits, kicking off the trend.
She had to go commando because the embroidered double split dress was cut all the way up to her navel, exposing a lot of skin.
Model Bella Hadid jumped on the bandwagon earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival in a show-stopping scarlet gown.
The raven-haired beauty was covertly strapped into a high-waisted leotard, despite the fact that she appeared to go entirely knickerless.
In matching crotch-flashing ensembles, Italian models Giulia Salemi and Dayane Mello took the trend a step further at the Venice Film Festival this month.
In eye-popping gowns slashed to the waist, the couple made a significant style statement.
Giulia chose a neon orange dress with a deep plunging V-neck to show off her cleavage and two massive splits, as well as one thin strip of cloth dangling down in front, barely covering her private parts.
Both avoided wearing underwear and instead cleverly hid their modesty with the “Shibue,” a strapless thong popular for disguising camel toes.
The Shibue, for those who don’t know, is a small piece of fabric that fits snuggly over your ladybits and is held in place by washable and reusable silicone gel strips.
These are attached to the barely-there underwear’s V-shaped front and heart-shaped back.
It’s for ladies who want to “wear what they want” without feeling restricted by their underwear, according to Shibue.
Celebrities were among the first to let their other set of lips show in revealing swimwear, and the fad slowly but steadily spread to the typical college student, RN, and neighborhood grocer, who may now be seen wearing a one-piece that leaves nothing but one’s clitoris to the imagination. And, to be honest, I have mixed feelings about it. Even though no one asked for it, I’m going to give it to you nonetheless.
Nene, for example, worked the hell out of Tammy Rivera’s swimsuit line early this spring when she teased a labial fold in the photo below, and Tammy herself makes you want to hit the gym and buy a lifetime supply of fake flat tummy detox teas if that’s what it takes to look like that in one of her designs.
We further investigate and found that the elite actress and models from Hollywood are following the same fashion trend and posting their pictures on social media. These include,
Ciara is an American artist and lyricist who has total assets of $20 million. She is a beautiful and gorgeous model who mainly appears in top-notch shows and engages her fans through social media postings (Courtesy Vizaca.com )
The picture below shows Kim Kardashian wearing a dress that reveals her body parts. It’s particularly the same kind of fashion that other celebrities used to wear to promote the labia cleavage trend.
Dakota Johnson is an American famous actress. Recently she attends the red carpet premiere of ‘The Lost Daughter’ during the 78th Venice International Film Festival. This dress of her creates a buzz in the fashion industry. Fans tweeted that she also follows the trend of labia cleavage.
