Despite the way a “fact” about Marilyn Monroe’s toes is usually worded, the real issue is not whether she had six toes on each foot — she didn’t. The claim, which is traceable to a specific source, is that she was born polydactyl, but with only one extra digit: a sixth toe on her left foot, which was supposedly surgically removed early on in her Hollywood career.
This claim originated with photographer Joseph Jasgur, who in March 1946 (as a favor to a friend who ran a modeling agency) took some test shots of a nineteen-year-old model named Norma Jean Dougherty. Young Norma Jean, of course, would later become one of the twentieth century’s most famous women under the name Marilyn Monroe.
Most of Jasgur’s pictures of a teenaged Marilyn Monroe remained unpublished for over forty years, until he finally assembled them for a book entitled The Birth of Marilyn: The Lost Photographs of Norma Jean . It was only then, four decades after the fact, that Jasgur noticed his photographic work revealed a supposedly previously undisclosed physical feature of the young Marilyn — she had an extra toe on her left foot, as the text of his book explained:

It wasn’t until 41 years later when Joseph Jasgur was alone in his darkroom making prints of that day’s excursion that he noticed something odd about Normal Jean’s left foot. She had six toes. A surprising discovery, he thought, but not earth-shaking. He had heard rumours of plastic surgery on her foot as well as her nose and chin, but he notes, “It’s none of my business.”

Despite Jasgur’s “It’s none of my business” disclaimer, his publisher made the most of the situation, using the picture in a “What’s wrong with this picture?” publicity campaign to promote his book. The photograph was also published in the British tabloid Daily Mirror and was denounced as a hoax by many Marilyn devotees.
So, did she or didn’t she? Here is the relevant portion of the photograph upon which this rumor was based, and a second (less clear) photograph from the same session:
It does look a bit like Marilyn has more than the usual five toes in these pictures, but later photographs clearly show her left foot with only five toes:
The notion that Marilyn was born with an extra digit which was later surgically removed is bunk, and the appearance of a “sixth toe” that Jasgur’s photos show is merely an artifact of the blending of shadows and light and the natural bulge that appears at the base of one’s small toe (where the digit joins the outer edge of the foot) to create something that looked like an extra toe.
Nothing other than those few questionable photographs supported the claim:
In short, the one and only piece of supporting evidence for the “sixth toe” claim was Jasgur’s photograph, which was far from clear. And even Jasgur himself didn’t notice the extra digit, either at the time he took the photographs or after he developed them — he spotted it only (somewhat conveniently) when he had a book coming out. Moreover, other photographs taken by Jasgur at the same time revealed a left foot that looked decidedly normal:
Marilyn Monroe may indeed have been “the girl with something extra,” but the extra something in this case doesn’t appear to have been a toe.

October 27, 2008 Jason I People Comments Off on Marilyn Monroe Had 6 Toes on One Foot?
WordPress Theme: Tortuga by ThemeZee.
Interesting, intriguing, bizarre, and mind blowing facts; short yet engaging articles.
There’s a claim made that Marilyn Monroe had 6 toes on one foot. This is a widely debunked myth , that for some reason still seems to reappear every once in a while. The picture that was used as “proof” of this claim was was taken by a man named Joseph Jasgur , who was a celebrity photographer during the golden age of Hollywood .
Joseph Jasgur was first introduced to her when he shot a series of modeling sessions of a young nineteen year old named Norma Jean Dougherty. In these sessions he shot several photos of her in the Hollywood Hills and at the beach. Of course, as you probably suspect, she later came to be known the world over as Marilyn Monroe.
The LA Times reported that some of the photos used in her portfolio that launched her career were taken by Mr. Jasgur. This portfolio was presented to 20th Century Fox, and soon Marilyn Monroe became a pop culture icon. Joseph Jasgur, however, did not see similar success in his career .
Once she gained notoriety, Marilyn Monroe “shunned” Mr. Jasgur and he spent much of his career trying to capitalize off of the photographs he took of Marilyn Monroe. In fact, most of the pictures he had taken of Marilyn Monroe went unpublished for over 40 years.
Around 41 years after that photo shoot, and with suspiciously convenient timing, Mr. Jasgur was in the process of writing a book entitled The Birth of Marilyn: The Lost Photographs of Norma Jean, when he noticed the sixth toe on her left foot. He even included a picture of it as part of his marketing campaign promoting the book.

Sculpture of Marilyn Monroe by John Seward Johnson II
Forever Marilyn in front of the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2021
Key : No longer extant or on public display
Forever Marilyn is a giant statue of Marilyn Monroe designed by Seward Johnson . The statue is a representation of one of the most famous images of Monroe, taken from Billy Wilder 's 1955 film The Seven Year Itch . Created in 2011, the statue has been displayed in a variety of locations in the United States, as well as in Australia.

The 26-foot-tall (7.9 m) 34,000-pound (15,000 kg) sculpture, manufactured of painted stainless steel and aluminium , [1] is a super-sized tribute to Marilyn Monroe's iconic scene from Billy Wilder 's 1955 infidelity comedy, The Seven-Year Itch , with the figure capturing the instant a blast of air from a NYC subway grate raises her white dress . [2]

The statue was displayed at Pioneer Court part of the Magnificent Mile section of Chicago, Illinois , before it was moved in 2012 to the corner of Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way in Palm Springs, California. [3]

It was given a farewell sendoff during the Palm Springs Village Fest on March 27, 2014, [4] and was then relocated to the 42-acre Grounds for Sculpture (GFS) in Hamilton, New Jersey as part of a 2014 retrospective honoring Seward Johnson. [1] [5] Due to its popularity, the statue remained on display at the GFS until September 2015, after the official end of the retrospective. [6]

The statue was then displayed in 2016 in Rosalind Park in the Australian city of Bendigo in connection with the Bendigo Art Gallery 's Marilyn Monroe exhibition. [7]

In 2018, the statue was displayed at Latham Park in Stamford, Connecticut , as part of a large public art exhibition honoring the works of Seward Johnson. Thirty-six sculptures were placed throughout streets and parks in Downtown Stamford , with Forever Marilyn being the highlight of the exhibit. [8] The statue sparked controversy when it was placed in Stamford with complaints arising due to her appearing to flash her underwear at the First Congregational Church in . [9] [10] [11] [12]

On 25 September 2019 Palm Springs mayor Robert Moon announced the statue's return to Palm Springs as a permanent fixture. [13] On 3 February 2021 it was announced that the statue – long stored in a dismantled state in New Jersey – would be erected on Museum Way just east of the Palm Springs Art Museum with an unveiling date of 18 April 2021. According to the announcement, Forever Marilyn is set to remain in Palm Springs for up to three years: in two years time the statue's local economic impact is scheduled to be reviewed and its future decided. [14] [15] As of June 2021 litigation seeking to block the erection of Forever Marilyn continued in the California courts: [16] however the statue was "unveiled" - albeit two months behind schedule - on 20 June 2021, [17] with the Riverside County Superior Court dismissing four of the Committee to Relocate Marilyn's purported causes of action on 18 July 2021, with the Committee's remaining two purported causes being dismissed by the Riverside County Superior Court on 9 September 2021. [18]

In August and September 2011 the statue was vandalized three times, most recently being splashed with red paint. According to the executive director of the Chicago Public Arts Group, "In our society, we have little room for sexually expressive images ... The social contract doesn't work, because it is itself laden with political meaning, and provocative meaning and sexual meaning." [19]

The public, however, remains enthusiastic : " Forever Marilyn journeyed back to Hamilton in April 2014, arriving at the Grounds for Sculpture on a truck as two dozen people cheered and took pictures. During the cross-country journey, people snapped photos of the sculpture in parking lots and along highways and posted them on social media." [6]

At least one full size counterfeit is known to have been created and displayed, as a discarded sculpture was photographed in a dump after being displayed outside a business center in Guigang, China. [20] A full-size counterfeit is used in the 2017 Chinese drama film, Angels Wear White . [21]

In 2021, the statue was debated on the tv programme Good Morning Britain . The statue was defended from accusations of misogyny by Monroe impersonator Suzie Kennedy. [22]
