A sinkhole, also known as a cenote, sink, sink-hole, swallet, swallow hole, or doline (the different terms for sinkholes are often used interchangeably ), is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer. Most are caused by karst processes – the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks or suffosion processes. Sinkholes vary in size from 1 to 600 m (3.3 to 2,000 ft) both in diameter and depth, and vary in form from soil-lined bowls to bedrock-edged chasms. Sinkholes may form gradually or suddenly, and are found worldwide.

What is the largest sinkhole in the US?
What is the largest sinkhole in the United States? There are some very large, ancient, ‘inactive’ sinkholes in some areas of the U.S. that are thousands of years old. Alabama claims to have the largest recent collapse sinkhole. It is called the “Golly Hole” and is located in Shelby County in the central part of the state.
Some parts of the United States are very susceptible to sinkholes. In May 2008, a large sinkhole formed in Daisetta, Texas, a suburb of Houston. The sinkhole formed when an underground mound of rock salt collapsed. The sinkhole swallowed several cars, oil drilling equipment, and oil tanks.

Sinkholes also form when the roofs of caves collapse. Sinkholes are often funnel-shaped, with the wide end open at the surface and the narrow end at the bottom of the pool. Sinkholes vary from shallow holes about 1 meter (3 feet) deep, to pits more than 50 meters (165 feet) deep.

A sinkhole is a DNS provider that supplies systems looking for DNS information with false results, allowing an attacker to redirect a system to a potentially malicious destination. DNS sinkholes have also historically been used for non-malicious purposes.

A sinkhole is a DNS provider that supplies systems looking for DNS information with false results, allowing an attacker to redirect a system to a potentially malicious destination. DNS sinkholes have also historically been used for non-malicious purposes.

When a computer visits a DNS source to resolve a domain name, the provider will give a result if possible, and if not, it will send the resolution system to a higher-level provider to try again. The higher a DNS Sinkhole is in this chain, the more requests it will receive, the more beneficial effect it will provide.

Network-level disabling
A sinkhole is a standard DNS server that has been configured to hand out non-routable addresses for all domains in the sinkhole, so that every computer that uses it will fail to get access to the real site. The higher up the DNS resolution chain the sinkhole is, the more requests it will block as it will supply answers to a greater number of lower NS servers that in turn will serve a greater number of clients. Some of the larger botnets have been made unusable by TLD sinkholes that span the entire Internet. DNS Sinkholes are effective at detecting and blocking malicious traffic, and are used to combat bots and other unwanted traffic.

Host-level disabling
By default, the local hosts file on a Microsoft Windows, Unix or Linux computer is checked before DNS servers, and can also be used to block sites in the same way.
