"It’s not often that we see a man naked... Women have to reveal a lot all the time."
W estworld is arguably one of the most sexual shows on television—and sometimes that violent aspect of that sex seems fairly gratuitous . But it's also an HBO show, so sex and violence are pretty much a standard. And while Season One had an epic human-robot orgy, Season Two is already pushing the boundaries. This time around, we're seeing some full-frontal male nudity, which is still quite a taboo for cable TV.
On last night's season premiere, Maeve's search for her daughter in the Westworld labs leads her to Lee Sizemore, who is in charge of the Narrative Department for the park. While she saves him from a murderous host, but that doesn't stop her from taunting him a little bit herself. It's then that she commands him to strip—a scene reminiscent, as Matt Miller pointed out in his recap of the premiere episode , of the Game of Thrones moment when Daenerys ordered Daario to undress before her .
The only difference: On that episode of Game of Thrones , we only saw actor Michiel Huisman from behind. On last night's Westworld , we got to see Simon Quarterman in all his glory .
Today, in an interview with Vulture , the actor reveals he wasn't too concerned about the nudity; he found it creating equal footing with his scene partner, Thandie Newton:
That's not to say, of course, it wasn't slightly awkward—but Quarterman suggests it was ultimately liberating:
In the very first episode, Westworld 's second season seems to be addressing some of the criticisms of its first season's gratuitous sex and violence. Here we already see a woman reversing the roles, taking power over one of the men who contributed to her own abuse and asserting her dominance instead.

“Westworld” kicked off its second season with a new narrative, bolder robots and some very strange sights (What’s that dead tiger doing here?).
Oh, and there was the bit of full-frontal male nudity, courtesy of Simon Quarterman.
Like other humans who once controlled the futuristic theme park, Quarterman’s character, Lee Sizemore, finds himself at the mercy of the robotic “hosts” — specifically Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton). In a key scene, the brothel madam orders Lee at gunpoint to strip in front of her so he can change clothes and help her find her daughter somewhere in the park.
After disrobing to his underwear, she isn’t satisfied and wants him to drop his drawers. That’s when viewers got the full Lee.
“You’re laying yourself out in a very vulnerable way in front of the world,” Quarterman said of the scene. “But once I got into it, it suddenly didn’t matter to me anymore. It was very liberating, and even empowering.”
Quarterman addressed the scene during an interview at last week’s “Westworld” premiere festivities in San Francisco. He said showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy discussed the possibility of doing a nude scene months before the script was finalized, to make sure he’d be OK with it.
“They asked me if I would be comfortable with being naked and I said ‘I’ll do it,'”Quarterman recalled. “I didn’t know what the scene was at the time, but I trusted them. I knew that whatever it was going to be, it would have some real weight to it, and be impactful.”
Quarterman explained the scene helped to underscore the major transformation taking place in the park.
“There’s a few things going on: We’re getting the role reversal, with the robots taking over,” he said. “And beyond that, there’s the feminine being in control of the masculine. Lee is defiant at first, but women are suddenly coming into power.
“Also, this kind of treatment is something that Maeve had been dealing with herself, constantly, for years. In some ways, it’s a form of payback.”
Moreover, Quarterman noted that nudity has a different kind of meaning on “Westworld.”
“Nudity is so often connected to sex in film and TV,” he said. “But there’s not sexual nudity on this show.”
