Silvie Huijben is an evolutionary biologist with a keen interest in the arms-race between us humans and the organisms we aim to control, in particular resistance evolution of malaria parasites and disease-transmitting mosquitoes. Her lab studies the evolutionary ecology of resistant organisms with the key question: how can we use evolutionary theory to better design resistance management strategies? Her research combines fieldwork, experimental evolution in the laboratory setting and mathematical modeling.
Silvie Huijben received her PhD in evolutionary biology and infectious diseases from the University of Edinburgh in 2010 and did her post-doc at the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics (CIDD) at the Pennsylvania State University (USA) on the evolution of drug resistance in a rodent malaria model. She subsequently moved to the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISglobal, Spain) in 2013 and obtained a Science in Society – Branco Weiss Fellowship and a Marie Curie Incoming International Fellowship to pursue her interests in the evolution of drug resistance and insecticide resistance as a post-doctoral scholar. She has been an assistant professor at the Center for Evolution and Medicine in the School of Life Sciences since February 2018.
Oct 2006 – Jan 2010                    PhD Cell, Animal and Population Biology , Edinburgh University, UK
June 2003 – Aug 2006                 MSc Biology , Wageningen University, Netherlands
Sept 2000 – Nov 2004                 BSc Biology, Wageningen University, Netherlands
The overall objective of the Huijben lab is to investigate optimal strategies for containment of antimalarial resistance in malaria parasites and insecticide resistance in disease-transmitting mosquitoes while optimizing disease control. We approach this by a combination of working with field-derived samples, empirical data derived from evolutionary experiments in the lab and, in collaboration, with mathematical modeling. Currently we work on the following research projects.
NOTE: We are currently looking for graduate students to enrich our lab, click here to apply
Understand the relation between insecticide resistance and malaria epidemiology The aim of vector control in the context of malaria is not to kill the mosquito per se, but to block or reduce disease transmission. While widespread mosquito resistance has been observed, impact on disease transmission might not be as severe as feared. Our goal is to (i) gather biological data on the factors that determine intervention efficacy using insecticide-resistant and –susceptible Aedes aegyptii in the lab and (ii) to incorporate these indirect effects into a mathematical model (in collaboration with Prof Abba Gumel from the Mathematics Department at ASU) to gain better understanding of the relation between insecticide resistance and malaria epidemiology.
Determine optimal insecticide resistance management strategies Currently insecticides are being applied as a ‘mono-treatment’, i.e. a single class of insecticide is used year after year. However, we know from mono-treatment in healthcare and agriculture that this provides the strongest selective pressure for resistance. We intent to determine optimal insecticide resistance management strategies by performing both short-term and multi-generational evolutionary experiments with Aedes aegyptii mosquitoes using different exposure regimes. In addition, we will use incorporate this data in mathematical models to determine optimal treatment regimes in collaboration with Prof. Abba Gumel.
Determine optimal antimalarial resistance management strategies Similar to the above project, we aim to optimize antimalarial resistance management strategies with a combination of long-term and short-term evolutionary experiments on Plasmodium falciparum parasites cultured in vitro in the lab as well as using a mathematical approach. Moreover, we are currently in the process of developing an insectary that will allow us to study the evolution of resistant malaria parasites within the mosquito vector.
Understand insecticide resistance patterns in the field Insecticide resistance are rather heterogeneous in the field, why do we see such diversity in resistance patterns? What are the factors that determine the level of resistance observed in the field? How does the level of susceptibility as measured by standard bioassays translate to intervention efficacy? At our field sites in Mozambique and Guyana we collect mosquitoes from various areas, do a wide range of insecticide susceptibility assays and molecular analysis for resistance markers with the aim to understand the evolution of insecticide resistance in an intervention setting better.

There in the middle of a pile of furs, the Hushhowl laid and stared at the ceiling. Since Caspian had gone on his trip, she hadn't slept much, just enough to keep up with training and chores. So when she woke just before the sun came up, it was no surprise to her and she immediately looked around, hoping that the Knight son had returned but it was just another dream. Inhaling deeply into the furs she tried catch any of Caspian's scent that might still be lingering, but most of it was gone causing her to grumble and push herself up out of bed.

It was too early to leave the Wetu, so Zasha looked around for something to do. She grabbed a piece of deer jerky, placing it in her muzzle with part of it hanging out, she chewed on it while straightening up. Even if she didn't know when her best friend would be home, he didn't need to come home to a pigsty. Picking up different items she asked herself questions outloud like,

"Where would he keep this? What did this even used to be? Is this his or mine?"

Little by little the Wetu began to take shape again the only thing missing was Cas. Zasha hated not knowing when he was going to get back or if he was okay. There were mountain lions and bears, not to mention luperci that were up to no good. It was starting to get to her. If he wasn't cominng home soon,

"The least he could do was write, why hasn't he sent word that he's okay?"

The Hushhowl tossed the rag she was cleaning the table with and let out an irritated sigh as she held the edge of the table and looked down closing her eyes, she just wanted her best friend back and safe, was that too much to ask?

Honestly, he'd thought he'd never be able to take a breath free of struggle and strife again. And while things weren't exactly... fine, or okay, he felt better than he'd done in a while. It didn't hurt to breathe.

His dreams were still unsettled, and at times Caspian was sure he was dreaming his uncles dreams, or reliving memories he'd never had. Cas was quite sure he'd never killed a man... or kissed a pretty looking girl with beautiful hair. Her name was Juliet, and Caspian could feel the tightly bound love for her that throbbed away below a deep, sucking grief above which was plastered another type of love that might have been a bandage. He did recognize Miss Sylvie and her kind smile.

< "Sorry, laddie. sometime's it's difficult keepin' it aw in." >

Caspian winced, for his Uncle's sake.

"It's okay." He mumbled, rubbing at the back of his neck, embarrassed in a second-hand kind of way.

It was washed away though, the closer they came. Subconsciously Caspian found himself walking faster, and faster, and then breaking into a loping jog. Forest and hill, and bursting bright glades passed him by. They were still smothered in winter, skeletal trees with no leaves and mud and slush splattering at his legs until his entire bottom half was soaked through. That didn't matter either.

< "Can ye feel it, loon?" > The ghost of his Uncle asked him, his great length of stride easily keeping pace with the smaller, faster male.

He couldn't, not yet, but he trusted that Enzo would know. They were so close now. Caspian thought he could smell the familiar scent that he'd been born to.

A dip in the land before them made it truly recognizable.

"Look, look Uncle!" He exclaimed, pointing at the jagged rocks of the mountains in the distance, a smudge of shadow upon the land "That's Knight's Peak! I know it is!"

No longer caring to hold himself back, he broke out into a full on run, sprinting with unabashed joy spreading across his face, tongue lolling wildly in the cold breeze. It felt like a wild leap, a jump of faith to finally cross the borders, a rush of energy and power that wasn't his own, but belonged to his Uncle, the seeping trickle bursting forth in a torrent that resembled a flood.

The strain of carrying his Uncle's weight alone was pulled from his shoulders as the giant's ghost leaned back upon the resources of the pack. Distinctly the ghost blossomed into full view where he'd only been an after-image, the burst of emerald and amethyst and bright, gleaming sun's shine threw shadows of their own against the man's face.

He was light as a feather in comparison.

High above them, a familiar shape wheeled, crying out into the air and swooping down to dive closer. Nunavut's wings brushed the top of his head as the gyrfalcon whipped by, and an errant foot clasped a hair or two, taking them with him as he rose up and up. No doubt taking them to Gramma Jace, and whoever else he found on the way.

< "Ah ken, Ah ken, Ah promised ye, didne Ah?" > Lorenzo was saying, gladly, in a voice that now boomed with strength. It wasn't to himself that Enzo was speaking to though, but, something else, maybe to Casa as a whole itself? He didn't know and he wasn't in a frame of mind to ask now.

< "Mah loon, Ah hae tae gang noo, yoo'll fin' whit yoo're lookin' fur in yer tent." >

Barely had he heard the words than the giant's presence was fading away, seeping back into the mortar and bricks and leaving him alone in his head.

His Wetu, huh? Shoving on another burst of speed he continued his full-paced run, eager to find what he was looking for. Eventually he had to slow down, and consoled himself with a swift power walk while he tried to suck his breaths back through his open mouth. Gathering himself back under control as he strode purposefully across the bridge, sopping wet from his head-long dash through the snow, he fought not to take again to running. He didn't want to arrive all out of breath and hot and sweating.

The camp was deserted, by some miracle, by some twist of fate. Not a soul to be found, except for one. An ear ticked and turned, catching words spoken with frustration, and clapped his hand to his mouth so he didn't laugh and give the game away. Her ungraceful mutterings and disparaging grumblings were heartwarming in their turn. Silently shrugging off his pack, he let it rest in the slurry of mud and snow.

Creeping to the entrance, and slipping aside the fur, he had a moment of utter panic and speechlessness. She was bent and tense, clearly beseeching the gods for her prayers to be answered. His jaw worked without sound, not even a squeak or a mutter.

Clearing his throat in an all too regal and pompous manner, Caspian rocked upon his feet for a moment, before breaking into a crooked smile that tugged up one side of his mouth and showed a hint of pearly white.

"Maybe he had something he was busy with, like getting home in a faster way than trying to write letters."

Oh it was horribly teasing of him. He was terrible.

His eyes were blurring though, and the Zasha before him wavered and wobbled as his eyes threatened to overflow.

"Hey Zash." He said in a raw, hoarse voice, opening his arms to her. Fenris knew how he had missed the feeling of her heartbeat against his cheek as he fell asleep.

So focused on that one spot on the table that she was picking at with her claw, lost in her own little world of talking to herself and asking questions, the sound of him clearing his throat almost didn't register with her. But as soon as his scent hit her nares and his voice penetrated her ears, it snapped her back to reality and her eyes grew wide. Throwing her hands over her muzzle she turned around quickly to face him. It was real, Caspian was finally home. And then she saw it, that tiny little smirk of a smile and those brilliant blue hues began to glimmer with tears. Zasha couldn't remember the last time she had seen her best friend smile.

As soon as the man opened his arms for her, she ran to him full force, not caring that the impact would send them both tumbling down to the ground. She leapt into his arm, wrapping her own arms around him and buried her muzzle into his scruff and messy hair. As they fell, she inhaled so deeply that it hurt her lungs, his scent calmed all of her fears, and she finally let the tears of joy fall.

"I missed you so much…"

The Hushhowl stayed just like that, holding on so tight, in fear that if she let go even a little bit that he would fade away into nothingness and this was all a figment of her imagination. But it wasn't. Her best friend had returned and he had smiled. Zasha hated…HATED…him being away, but if it meant that he healed even a little bit, to be able to smile it was well worth the pain and heartbreak of them being apart.

"Cas…you smiled…not some fake smile, but a genuine smile. This is the best day. I'm so glad you're home."

Zasha didn't mean physically, of course she was glad to hold her friend again in her arms, but she meant spiritually and emotionally, Caspian was home. Whatever the giant ghost did, she would have to thank him later, the Knight's son had returned.

Finally, after she didn't know how long, she took one last deep breath of him, and sat up looking down at him she wiped away the tears from her muzzle not caring or realizing the streaks of mud that were left in the wake. Zasha chuckled, in between sniffling. There as so much joy in her heart, it wanted to burst.

"Okay! Tell me about your trip?!?!?!?"

She reluctantly inched back and stood up, offering him a hand to help him up. The two of them had so much catching up to do.

He couldn't be sure but he thought she was crying too, or in the process of it, but it wasn't readily apparent through the tears in his own eyes. Zasha collided with him at full pelt, driving the air from his lungs with a large whoof , and staggering him back, where his feet sunk into the mud, he overbalanced and tumbled backwards into the slushy mud with a gross sounding squelch.

It didn't matter, he didn't care though and hugged her back just as fiercely.

"I missed you too!" The words weren't really enough at all, and they didn't cover the breadth and complexity of the true emotions but they were the best he had.

"Yeah I... I saw some things.. it's... a work in progress, it's not entirely okay." But he smiled that crooked smile again, glad that she was happy to see it.

Pulling himself up from the mud, he sat upright and used the back of his hand to ripe away at his own face. He could feel the cold, slippery muck seeping into his fur and touching his skin, he shuddered.

Grabbing hold of her hand, he braced and allowed Zasha to help him up, stumbling a bit as the mud didn't quite want to let go. Just like how he didn't want to let go of her hand. Despite all of his traveling, he didn't much want to stay still, perhaps it was the energy of being back and not feeling the dark, insidious cloud hanging over his head,

"Can we walk while I tell you?" He asked, tucking her hand into the crook of his elbow.

It was no figment of her imagination or mirage from lack of sleep, Cas was home and it breathed a breath of fresh air into her, for the first time since he had been gone, she felt life returning to her soul. It had to be one of the best days, even if they were covered in cold muck. To see him smile and say he missed her too made tears of joy flow even more, she loved that cricked little smile of his.

Sitting up her forearms and hands were covered in mud and trails of mud on her face looked as if she was a warrior readying herself for battle, but the only battle she ever wanted to face was the battle of keeping Caspian close and keeping him smiling. Pulling her best friend out of the mud she almost slipped again and landed on her butt in the mud, but somehow the two balanced each other and kept upright and Zasha let out a sigh of relief.

A giant, humungous smile graced her muzzle as he placed her hand into his arm and held it, resting her head on his shoulder for a moment she nodded,

"Yes lets walk and talk!"

Picking her head up she kissed him on the cheek and squeezed his hand,

"It's so good to have you home."

The Hushhowl gave a few wags and continued to smile and they walked away from the Wetu, careful not to slip in the mud.

Zasha had to stoop a little bit to rest her head on his shoulder, only a little teeny bit, but she managed it with surprising grace. He'd never truly, really noticed the height differences between him and many of his friends and family. Among them all though, Caspian saw the world from a lower point of view.

"It's good to be home." He said frankly, his muddy dripping tail swaying in the air behind him.

With his free hand he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly,

"Well uh.. started off.. we got caught by the rising tide on the land bridge, so I had to sit there in the middle for a good long while. It was lucky it wasn't a bad stormy day."

Caspian shrugged like it wasn't a big deal, but he had been a little scared at least. He knew how to swim but, the rocks there were sharp and he didn't fancy being battered against them.

"Well we made it most of the way and then I had to swim for a bit. Not long, and I got warm again after pretty quickly." He added hastily, not wanting her to worry about him being cold and wet and sick. He'd worried her enough with his prior selfishness.

Zasha was ecstatic to hear that Caspian was happy to be home, and she wagged happily as they walked in unison together. She held on to his arm tight and even occasionally squeeze tighter just to make sure that he was really still there and it wasn't some dream or her imagination. Him being home was just too good to be true, so she sometimes questioned whether he was there or
