This is very beautiful story that touches hearts. I got it along with the "Into the White" DVD and amazingly enough they both share the same concept - two enemy army soldiers are forced into one and the same tight living conditions and what happens next... Linda Hamilton acting is remarkable! Movie is a definite MUST SEE! Another one that comes to mind is Joyeux Noel. That one is about the First World War not the second but also touches the issue of real humans behind the army uniforms. I highly recommend all the movies aforementioned for their deep humanitarian values.
This may be my favorite Christmas movie. It rates right up there with "It's a Wonderful Life." It gets a 3 star rating not for the movie itself but for what Echo Bridge did to the DVD. They eliminated the original first 4 or 5 minutes of the movie from the DVD. The movie starts with an older gentleman sitting in a diner. A young man comes in and sits and talks with the older gentleman. Then they take a walk and talk. Then the movie starts in with the winter war scene. The older gentleman is the young boy from the story meeting with the grandson (I believe) of one of the American soldiers from the story who came over to Germany to meet with the older gentleman and hear "The Christmas Story!" Though this does not make or break the movie it is showing how the families did maintain contact years after the war. There may be other DVD versions of this movie out so I want to point out this DVD is barcoded 096009415099 - 2011 Echo Bridge Home Entertainment - 86 minutes. Even with the small missing beginning - Get this movie!!!!! Unless your idea of good Christmas movies are all the sugary and magical get all you ever wanted for Christmas type of movies you will tremendously enjoy this movie. As all the other reviewers have stated - this is the TRUE Christmas message as intended by the Lord.
I foresee this as always being one of my favorite Christmas movies. I love true stories and Linda Hamilton is excellent in her role as the German wife and mother who no longer agrees with Hitler's raceme. After loosing her older son and possibly her husband her dedication turns to saving her younger son from having to join the Reich so she takes him to the family hunting camp close to the war front while waiting for the war to end. Her Christmas Eve is spent playing referee to the American and German troops who she has invited to spend the night in the shelter of her home leaving all weapons hidden outside. A marvelous movie with intrigue and quite an unusual way of viewing WW I I and Christmas. I was quite upset that this movie was only aired on TV between 1 and 5 a.m. during the Christmas holiday when many wouldn't see it. I highly recommend you buy your own copy of Silent Night to share with family and friends during the holidays.
My wife and I saw this movie on TV quite a while ago and it's message of The Celebration of Christmas as Jesus' Birthday between two opposing enemies is held up to "Peace" by Linda Hamilton very well. It did happen in WWII a few times and this is the way it could've happened. The movie stuck in our memories and I bought it for her last Christmas. Well worth the money.
In 2007 while doing that guy thing called channel surfing I found this movie. The story of Frau Elizabeth Vicken ,Linda Hamilton, hiding from the Second World War in a cabin in the Ardennes Forest with her last son Eric finds herself in the middle of the Battle of the Bulge. On the day before Christmas she is visited by 3 Battle weary American Soldiers lost from their unit she invited the soldiers into her home. She has only one rule no guns in her house. The Soldier overcome their wariness and agree they will share their rations with her and stay the night. Later three war weary German Soldiers approach the house and are given the same conditions by Frau Vicken which a agreed to by the German Hauptman. Though the characters start the movie as caricatures that we have see in every war movie they become individuals as the story unfolds much as a group of strangers at a dinner party interact getting to know each other and the soldier's begin to see that they have much in common with each other and a tentative detente begins to develop between the two groups. In the end the two groups go back to war but with an understanding of each other that shows that all men would be brothers if given the chance. Though this movie is billed as a Christmas Film it is a universal film with a great story line and good acting. I recommend this film to all people. It should become a staple of the holidays and an inspiration to us all.
This is an excellent moving and provocative movie, based on a true incident, about a German mother and her young son in the winter of 1944. Three German and three American soldiers stumble upon her poor and rustic cabin on Christmas Eve. In the true spirit of Christmas she is willing to share her meager food with both Germans and Americans but insists they keep their guns outside. The tension, of course, is in her attempts to protect her son and control the animosity between the the two group of soldiers while they seek shelter under her roof. Some copies of this DVD include a CD of 10 Christmas classical songs. Although a traditionalist, I particularly liked its up-beat version of "Joy to the World." Oddly and frustratingly, none of the artists on the CD are identified.
Silent Night is a suspenseful and deeply thought provoking movie based on a true story. It reflects the true message of Christmas in an unexpected and challenging way: warring enemies are forced to accept and keep a truce for one night, just long enough for light to shine in the darkness of bitter souls and end the fight. There is nothing trivial or insipid about this story and the acting is excellent. The movie is truly well worth watching and it is one that will share space in our familyś movie library with those Christmastime favorites we watch every year.

You dont need known actors for this type of film to work...!
I like films set in the war and was keen to see this after reading other reviews. I was doubtful as being a 'true story' sometimes they don't work. I found the actors convincing even an aged Linda Hamilton speaking German was clear enough with her young son whom they spend Christmas in a hut with a war around them during ww2. Then a group of 3 Americans turn up, one injured, who seek shelter and then 3 Germans turn up looking for shelter also. Naturally this should have not worked; since being enemies they should have shot each other's brains out or the Germans by right could have arrested the Americans and 'Elizabeth' and her son for sheltering them. It is a nice film that it is set around Christmas, hence the title, Silent Night so the soldiers put their anger issues aside and make peace with Elizabeth and her son who is quite curious about them. The German commandant is quite suspicious and eventually cracks venting his anger towards everyone but then towards the end the group go their own way. I like how there were no real swear words in this, as in most American war films they like to swear a lot, showing how tough they are. You can sort of relate to the actors who I really don't know who they are, despite being familiar with Linda Hamilton (Dantes' Peak). It's a nice war film with a nice setting, being a low budge film it seems to work well.

Beautiful true story
A teacher whose eldest son is dead and husband is missing tries to save her remaining 12 year old son Fritz from conscription during the last few months of WW2. Taking refuge in the family log cabin in the woods dangerously close to enemy lines, both German and American soldiers stumble across their hide out and end up staying the night together. At first the evening is full of hatred and tension but gradually through a roller coaster of emotions mutual respect is found. The film is simply a made for TV film by Canadian TV staring Linda Hamilton (of Terminator fame) but don't let that put you off. It is brilliantly acted and will leave you feel uplifted.

Great movie that pulls on the heart strings.
Given the brutality that existed in the Ardennes, during December 1944 and January 1945, this story - of how German and American soldiers ceased fighting for a night in order to celebrate Christmas - grabbed my attention. In the light of the Malmedy massacre and other shootings, of both Belgian civilians and Germans, it seemed unsual to read of such a tale. That said, it is true and so refreshing to view such a heart rending story; of how humanity can overcome the harsh reality of war. The attention to detail and the acting were top notch in this film, most notably by Linda Hamilton, who managed to produce a more than adequate German accent. In short, this is a good movie that is perfect for Sunday afternoons.

This was a lovely film. No really big name actors to distract with previous roles but a genuinely engrossing story of real charm.
