Silica (SiO x) thin films are promising for a wide range of applications, including catalysis, separation technology, biomedicine, or transparent super-hydrophilic films. Here, we present a study demonstrating a unique way of producing ultra-thin, freestanding silica films via silicon etching.
The as-prepared film demonstrates a hierarchical porous structure with 2D orderly arranged macropores and disorderedly distributed mesopores in the skeleton, as shown in figure 2. The macropores in the film show hexagonal close-packed alignment with the periodicity of 1000 nm and approximate hollow hemispherical shape.
