This page looks at the Karate katas used by major Karate styles (i.e. Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, Shito-Ryu, Wado-Ryu, Shorin-Ryu and Kyokushin) and many smaller Karate styles.
In addition, this section explores the meaning of each Shotokan Karate kata because many Shotokan schools question their students about these kata meanings during belt tests. Here we list 27 Shotokan kata, but there are many Dojo that practice 26 Shotokan kata and more that practice more than 27. The difference between Dojo practicing 26 shotokan kata and 27, is the inclusion or exclusion of Taikyoku Shodan or Kihon Kata.

The reason why a variety of explanations for this kata can exist without conflict is that the kata is so broad to begin with. To be more specific, one's Ri (theory) for the kata is what creates their shu, and one's shu demonstrates how correct their ri was.
