Damiano Caruso : “ I’m very happy to have won here in my region, especially wearing the jersey of the Italian national team. I want to thank my club for allowing me to race here and the Italian Cycling Federation for supporting me at best. I have prepared well in recent weeks for this goal and I have gathered what I had sown “.

Despite his efforts, Filippo Fiorelli was unable to build up a sufficient margin to win the points classification jersey.

The only athlete able to win the Giro di Sicilia in consecutive editions remains Carlo Galetti in 1907 and 1908, the first two editions held.

With the victory in the general classification, his seasonal successes rise to three: for the first time Caruso wins three professional races in one year.

Second stage win at the Giro di Sicilia for Damiano Caruso after this year’s 2nd stage arriving in Caltanissetta. These are his two successes in this early part of the season.
For the first time in his career, at the age of 34, Damiano Caruso wins the general classification of a professional stage race.
His last success in a stage race was the Giro delle Pesche Nettarine in 2009: at that time he was 21 years old and rode in an amateur team (Mastromarco).

500 metres between him and stage victory and the entire Giro di Sicilia.

He has gained a gap over Nibali .
Cepeda is further back.

Meintjies also seems to be running out of energy.

The closing climb (18.0 km) ascends along the eastern side of the Etna, following a constant succession of hairpins, beside more or less recent lava streams. The mean gradient is 6.0% (considering a short downhill stretch past the fork leading to the Rifugio Citelli), with slopes averaging 9% over the last 3 km (and espe[1]cially around -2,000 m), and topping out at 11% with 1.5 km to go. The home straight (50 m) is on 6.5 m wide asphalt road.

The Shark is attacking and Caruso is not letting go.

Remarkable effort by the captain of the Italian National Team.
Vincenzo Nibali and Jefferson Cepeda hold on, while the others all seem to have run out of steam.

His dreams of final victory end here, but congratulations to this young man are due.

Caruso and Nibali are studying each other, they have been side by side for several kilometres.

The last 10 km are the perfect stage for the two big favourites: Damiano Caruso and Vincenzo Nibali .

With 11km to go Gomez remains in the lead with an advantage of 24”.

The two Colombian riders are tackling the final climb in a peculiar way: Gomez seems to have more energy but instead of giving his all he seems to be waiting for his team-mate.

Piano Provenzana is a ski area rising 1,810 metres above sea level, along the northern slope of the Etna, within the municipal territory of Linguaglossa . The resort is hemmed by a large pine forest, in a lovely Alpine scenery, which somehow contrasts with the bare volcanic terrain. The view ranges from the Ionian Sea to the east, to the Strait of Messina to the north. The resort is considered as a jewel in the crown of Sicily’s ski areas . Four cable lifts (three T-bars and one chairlift) can take winter sports enthusiasts from 1,800 to 2,400 metres, where they will find four ‘red’ (intermediate) and two ‘blue’ (easy) slopes that rely entirely upon all-natural snowfall. Gears and equipment can be rented directly at the resort, and beginners can take ski or snowboard lessons with licensed instructors. The Monte Conca area, not far from Piano Provenzana, offers plenty of accommodation facilities, as well as a cross-country skiing track. There is more than just skiing, though. Piano Provenzana is the ideal starting point for a horseback ride, or for a snowshoe hike up to the craters that formed following the 2002 eruption (2,200 m above sea level).

That leaves the two Colombians Gomez and Pineda and, in between, Gandin and Venchiarutti , who are now almost a minute behind the front of the race. Peloton at 1’30”.

The Team Corratec rider, leader of the climbers’ classification, needs to gain a few points at the top of this KOM in order to take home the Maglia Verde Pistacchio .

The two Colombian riders have taken an important lead over the rest of the breakaway and don’t look likely to slow down.

Alessandro Fedeli sets the pace in this phase, followed by Alessandro Verre and Christian Scaroni . The bunch is now 1’18” behind.

But Etna will change everything and decide the final winner.

Sitting halfway between Catania and Taormina , Giarre is part of a major urban agglomeration which also comprises the nearby town of Riposto. During the fascist period, the two made up the municipality of Ionia. The town was the birthplace of the popular singer songwriter Franco Battiato , in 1945. The conurbation has a population of over 45,000, and it ranges from the shore to the foot of the Etna. The centre of Giarre developed around Via Callipoli and Via Archimede, currently Corso Italia. The roads are paved with lava stone, and lined with elegant aristocratic buildings erected between the 18th century and the early 20th century. Palazzo Bonaventura (formerly Palazzo Quattrocchi) and the former hydroelectric power station (Fratelli di Mauro) both sport beautiful Art Nouveau details. The Neoclassical mother church , dedicated to Sant’Isidoro Agricola and built starting in 1794, stands in the main square ( Piazza Duomo ). Two square base belfries, with four clocks, tower over the façade. The sanctuary of Santa Maria la Strada is actually the oldest church in Giarre, dating back to 1081. Traditional local specialties include cor’i cani (which translates as “dog’s heart”), a unique beverage made from lemon ‘granita’, mint syrup and water.

We are approaching the Intermediate Sprint of Mascali, after which it will be practically uphill all the way to the finish, first with the next ascent of Contrada Giuliana and then Etna.

The rider from Basilicata, 5th in the general classification, suffered a few physical problems which forced him off the bike.

Matteo Amelia and Davide Baldaccini , both from Team Corratec, have dropped out of the race.
A few minutes later Lorenzo Pellegrini and Simone Roganti from D’Amico – UM Tools also raised the white flag.

In between are two riders from Colombia’s Tierra de Atletas team, Rafael Pineda is 30″ behind and German Gomez is 1’30” behind.

Bronte is located 50 kilometres away from Catania . The town rises at an average 800 m above sea level, on a gentle incline between the western slopes of the Etna , the Simeto River and the foothills of the Nebrodi Mountains . The historic centre has signature narrow streets and steep staircases, ancient buildings, beautiful lava stone portals, aedicules and icons, as well as small sculptures topping the lintels or arches of the houses. Major landmarks also include the 12-century abbey of Santa Maria di Maniace , located a few kilometres from the town. In 1799, King Ferdinand I donated both the building and the surrounding lands to the English admiral Horatio Nelson , which is why the abbey is also known as Nelson’s Castle . The naves, a marvellous Gothic-Norman portico and the Byzantine icon of the Virgin Hodegetria are all that has survived of the original temple. The world-famous Pistacchio di Bronte , which is grown and processed here, is a prized variety of pistachio with protected designation of origin status, and the cornerstone of the town’s food heritage. Local culinary specialties include penne with pistachio, spaghetti with sparacogni (wild herb), homemade tagghiarini and maccarruni, as well as pasta ‘ncasciata (macaroni with fennel, breadcrumbs and sardines).

There, on the slopes of Mount Etna, this Giro di Sicilia will be decided.

High speed caused a crack in the bunch.

The thought of approaching Etna with a few seconds advantage over the peloton is an idea that tempts many riders.

12” gap for them on another group of 20 men. The main bunch is 24” behind.

The pace is immediately very high from the very first kilometres.

Obviously it will be difficult, perhaps impossible, but the Croatian has nothing to lose, this Giro di Sicilia is already a success for him.

The Shark is one of the big favourites for today’s stage and the entire Giro di Sicilia, along with former teammate and great friend Damiano Caruso and Lugano neighbour Domenico Pozzovivo .

… and we are sure he is ready to fight for it!

We will start with a relatively long 6.8 km transfer to Km 0, from where the race will officially kick off at 11.30 am.

Ragalna belongs to the Metropolitan City of Catania . The earliest evidence of its origin dates back to the Norman era. In the 1400s, Ragalna became a possession of the Moncada di Paternò family. In 1780, a lava flow threatened to destroy the village, and the relics of St. Barbara were carried in procession through the streets. The Saint was thought to have worked a wonder, because the largest branch of lava ended its course where the procession had stopped. Originally a ‘frazione’ (subdivision) of Paternò, Ragalna eventually became independent in 1985. Local economy relies mainly on agriculture, with plenty of orchards, olive groves and vineyards at the volcano foothills. Currently, though, the area has experienced a growing tourist vocation, owing to its convenient location within the Parco dell’Etna . Away from the town centre, you can climb up to over 1,700 metres, reaching the Grande Albergo dell’Etna, a former hotel that has been closed for decades, and which will be redeveloped soon. The Serra La Nave observatory and the church of Madonna delle Nevi are just a short distance away. The park offers plenty of nature trails, such as the Sentiero Monte Nero degli Zappini , a 4-kilometre hiking loop that begins right on the plateau west of the Monte Vetore.
