Honestly... Shocking & Stomach Turning.
I tried to walk into this with an open mind and initially naïvely assumed this would explore Taboos in a more placid "Hey look at these strange weird cultural quirks / oddities" way, but what I saw instead was stomach turning, especially in regard to the treatment of animals. The senseless barbarity and butchery fully on display was overwhelming and shocking at times. Savage and inhumane from a civilized western perspective; a brutal reminder that some humans still live guided by a stone age mentality in a myriad of ways. The narrating presenters / experts try to cast the scenes in a "Well, we can't judge what we can't understand" sort of light, along with the classic "We need to ensure we preserve these cultures, otherwise they'll be lost". To be honest though... ... sometimes I couldn't escape the feeling that there was no ACTUAL value being created here; it was nothing more than desperation meeting destructive belief / tradition, thus, I often felt myself strongly disagreeing with the premise that these snake-oil approaches NEEDED to be kept active vs simply preserving them in history books. As an example, a tribe in Africa had a woman claiming to be some sort of spirit vessel, and all she really did was take on a masculine voice/tone, have people slit live animal throats (including a calf), leave the animals wriggling or flailing on the ground as people danced in the blood gushing from the animal's neck... Then, all she said to each person who came seeking help & advice was "everything is going to be okay"... All I could do was sit there stunned in traumatic shock and horror, wondering how anyone could possibly take her seriously, let alone believe that this cruelty would solve their issues. One woman even came seeking help for her sick daughter; internally I was screaming "Take her to a doctor!". In my view, the sad reality was that some of these communities would have been better served with a proper education focused on science, and better access to healthcare; worrying about 'preserving' their culture, as far as I could tell, was RELATIVELY a non-issue. ANYWAY, the production quality WAS decent, and it WAS interesting, BUT given that it was shot "in your face" David Attenborough style (think "nature shows that explicitly / vividly showcase death in the animal world"), this show is not for the squeamish, and if you're an animal lover, I'd STRONGLY recommend you take a hard pass on some episodes (though, unfortunately, no warnings are given in advance). Oh, and if you're on the sensitive side, DO NOT WATCH RIGHT BEFORE BED; give yourself plenty of time to recover and unwind. I regard myself as an animal lover and empathetic towards the plight of others, so my review should likely be regarded with that lens in mind.

Love the show, Tom Hardy is fantastic. So much of the dialogue is hard to follow with Hardy's character having a low pitched gravelly voice and CC would've helped alot.

(Note...A few spoilers from the first episode) This gets a little too grotesquely violent for me which at times felt gratuitous (NOT for kids!), but it's mainly a drama and it's got lots of interesting characters. Tom Hardy is incredible as usual. His character is a former slave runner who has returned from the open seas and faraway lands for his father's funeral, and he discovers that he was bequeathed a small island vital to both Britain and the U.S., and it's a race to see who will secure the rights to it. He has to balance a lot of plates and think very fast to try to survive as the British side is initially gunning for him. Something that makes this story different and new for me is that not only does he survive, there's some justice woven in against the all-powerful East India Trading Co. and it's all very cleverly done...don't want to spoil it! Anyway, he returned from his travels as a practitioner of an African religion and there's an element of the supernatural to it also, although you're not sure if he's just gone mad from being a slave runner and having hallucinations, or if his visions are really happening. The rest of the cast is amazing as well. There are two love stories with interesting twists. There's a lot of mystery around his deceased father and his past, and you watch him unravelling this with a cast of salty characters, each with their own viewpoint on who his father and mother were. It's not an upper, for sure, but for me it was a fascinating tale about survival, family relationships, the stomach-turning existence of slave ships and the psychological impact of that, London at that time (recreated very convincingly), so it keeps your interest in many ways. Hope that Taboo will eventually return for more seasons despite Covid delays and Tom Hardy being the new James Bond! He'll be a great Bond for sure...but hope he keeps doing work like this as well. I think this was BBC.

I am really digging FX original programming. Fresh, different, and doesn't assume it's audience is stupid. Refreshing. After seeing his performance in this as well as films like Bronson and The Drop, I'd watch Tom Hardy in anything at this point: watering his lawn, bowling, whatever. This guy is underappreciated as most people only know him from The Dark Knight as Bane (*sigh). Yes, he is a fine, grade A hunk, but dude has serious acting ability (and from show credits, production/creative writing) skills as well. I am a sucker for BBC/PBS British period show dramas, but this is a horse of a completely different color from your Downton Abbeys and Poldark tentpoles. I like the intrigue between the Dutch East India Trading company and British monarchy and the James Delaney characters ability to outplay several dangerous elements with nebuloud interests in early 19th century London. The show has a very broodiny mysterious pulse to it. You are both repulsed by and all the more drawn in to James from his first entry on screen to his ingenious drive and machinations to achieve his goals against seemingly impossible odds. And his wins aren't of the typical gimmicky, tv programming variety. You get the feeling that This man is either a prolific chess player setting up each move and desired effect waaaay in advance or maybe all that coal dust and ashes he's smearing on his face really does allow him to see the future or maybe talk to the dead. Or maybe he's just a horrible drunk, I'm not sure yet. In any event, he is someone that would NOT make a good drinking buddy, and best would be really good to steer clear of him in general. However, if you needed a mountain moved or just wanted the King of England or a giant corporation to stop harassing you - get this guy on your team!!! Add to this mix, atypical TV topics & historical elements like American revolutionary spies operating in England, Afro-pagan witchcraft, the significance of anyone mentioning the War of 1812 (an event, strangely, not really discussed in history classes in U.S. education), and one of the first multi-national corporate monopolies, Dutch East India Co., an organization whose power, influence, and wealth rivaled that of European monarchies and helped to inact geo-political policies around the world that many are still affected by to this day - makes for one very meaty, intellectually engaging, of the tv shows currently on air. Looking forward to season 2!

extraordinary! Delicious! beautiful cinematography, fun ride. All the characters are rough, many tatted to the gills, an underbelly of British society we do not usually assign to this period - 1800. Tom Hardy is his own galaxy. he is in a class by himself as an actor. Here he has created the perfect vehicle for his disturbing, arousing persona. sexual tension at every perplexing turn makes the series a must see in our house. It is perplexing because this character, Delaney, is a degenerate, his life calamitous, and yet I want to be with him all the time. Those strange rituals and hallucinations intrigue us. here is the only fault. too many quick edits that never tell us what we are seeing. Perhaps Hardy's own humanity loans this character the detail and depth. I cant tell if i have a crush on the actor or the character. it's very sweet, at my age, to have a crush on an actor. I am happy to say this series, this story, has none of the too-hip trappings of some of the lesser, arty, uber-testosterone, British films Mr. Hardy has made popular. Taboo first class, beautiful, stately, rebellious, just like the actor himself. the reflection and result of a very complex piece of work from many people. Mr Hardy likes us to wipeoff the sticky wet preconceptions of our libido and see whats going on in there. "I like to see whats underneath" says Delaney, and I suspect Mr Hardy does as well. The actor brings humanity to anything he does because he is a humane person. Safe in our houses we get to enjoy a cannibalistic, incestuous killer. also a rather saavy businessman who arrives with incantations and contracts. and while Delaney keeps secrets for his sister, he is also setting fire to her life. They are both mysterious, ruinous, but at all times one cannot take ones eyes off Tom Hardy, who looks pretty damn good naked and tatted out. I remember him from star trek Nemesis. a poor film, but he was fabulous even then. I wish there were more than 8 episodes
