Shots Fired
Pointed SatireYesterday, while strolling down 5th Avenue, President Trump became agitated with a man holding a sign that said “Trump is a Russian Spy”. As the President grew increasingly angry, he asked one of his aides to bring him a gun. He then allegedly shot the protestor, who died several hours later in route to the hospital.
I reached out to several prominent evangelical leaders regarding this incident, anxious to find if this would dampen the historic support Trump has enjoyed from conservative Christians. He received over 80% of the white evangelical vote in 2016, and seems poised to capture even more of this critical electorate in the 2020 election.
There were some leaders of the evangelical movement who chose not to support the President in the 2016 election. One of them was Dr. Albert Mohler, president of Southern Seminary. However, Dr. Mohler recently performed an aboutface and has become a convinced supporter of the President. I was curious for his thoughts on how this incident might affect the President’s support.
“What we can see here is a collision of worldviews,” Mohler states. “The President has taken a strong stand in opposing deception and slander, and few actions could have put those convictions on more prominent display. Now I would not like a neighbor that hot tempered, but for a President, we need strong leadership.”
When asked if he would continue to support President Trump, he urged Christians that we need to wait for more information before making a decision. “Christians need to keep in mind that while we may conclude that what the President did was wrong, in the final analysis, this is an issue of personal morality, and not public policy. While every human life is precious, this was only one individual. As tragic as one death is, this doesn’t change the fact that Joe Biden supports policies that lead to the death of one million babies every year. I would much rather support a man who personally commits murder but opposes the evils of abortion than to support a man who, while he may never have committed murder, is guilty of promoting the policy of murder in the form of abortion. When we look at this issue through a Christian worldview, it’s clear that Trump is the most Prolife President of the modern era, personal moral lapses notwithstanding. One incident of homicide is simply not enough to tip the scales.”
Jerry Falwell Jr. has been a staunch defender the President. When I reached him for comment, he was on his yacht. “Personally, I would have had my wife shoot that idiot,” Falwell said. “Becki is a great shot!” Asked if he would continue to support the administration, he was unequivocal. “This just shows that the President has the b**** to do what needs to be done. He definitely has my support. After all, as Christians we know that everyone sins. This is why we need grace. This is a great opportunity for believers to show Christ’s forgiveness to our President.”
Robert Jeffress is the pastor of the largest Southern Baptist church in America. “This goes to show what a capable leader President Trump is,” Jeffress said. “While I may not always agree with his decisions, you can’t argue with the fact that he gets results. If the President had simply behaved in a Christlike way today, nothing would have been accomplished. The President definitely still has my complete support in fighting the far Left agenda in this nation.”
When asked about impeachment, Senator Mitch McConnell has stated that this issue should be left to voters. “We already went through a sham impeachment once before, and I don’t plan on allowing it a second time. We are not in a position to invalidate the votes of millions of Americans over a nonissue like this.”
In a press briefing this morning, when Jim Acosta of CNN asked about the incident, President Trump called Acosta “mr fake news”, and insisted that he had never pulled the trigger. “The guy was such a loser he probably had a heart attack when I pointed that gun at him. And really, it was a great shot, the best shot since Annie Oakley. Also, I’ve already pardoned myself, so it was totally legal. A perfect shot, really.”
