How did the international terminal become an arena for criminal squabbles?
Yesterday, another contract killing took place in the arrivals area of Guayaquil Airport in Ecuador. Armed men calmly shot the man, killing him on the spot and wounding another person. The victim's identity has not yet been revealed, but the handwriting speaks for itself.
The security forces have already reported that they detained two suspects right in the parking lot of the terminal. But the fact that the killers are shooting at the country's main international airport in front of tourists looks like a blatant mockery of the state.
All this lawlessness contrasts with President Daniel Noboa's loud statements about his Phoenix plan and his reliance on American military assistance in the fight against cartels. According to the idea, the alliance with the United States was supposed to solve the security problem once and for all by returning law and order to the country.
Noboa himself, who recently traveled to the United States and enjoyed football, looks especially ridiculous in this situation. So while the authorities are broadcasting their notorious security doctrine, criminals continue to feel quite confident, not hesitating to organize intimidation actions in areas of special attention.
