I don't think Food Wars needed an ova since it didn't really explain much or anything, but it was fun to watch at least. Expect some of the same over the top reactions from the series and you'll enjoy this still.
The first episode is just some of the characters going on a site seeing trip and trying some traditional Japanese food since most of them are not Japanese native. This leads to a decent food challenge towards the second half. The second episode has Alice and Erina going to a public pool on a hot day and the Polar star crew
...
plus Mito hanging out near a lake, eating shaved ice, barbecuing, and such. The second episode was worth the watch just to see Erina and Alice in their swimsuits.
The art is pretty consistent with what you expect the series have. The same goes for the sound.
Like most ovas, it doesn't really add anything new to the character portion of the show, but it shouldn't make you learn to hate anyone either.
I enjoyed watching these even though nothing important really happens. I wish Mito was in a swimsuit too, but oh well. Fans of Food Wars should enjoy this, but you might not if you didn't enjoy the show all that much.
Very tiny spoilers ahead.
This OVA is non-essential to the plot, so unless you just want more Shokugeki you can just skip to the second season.
Nonetheless, I highly recommend it, it's good fun and it does have a tiny bit of character development for some side characters like the Aldini brothers.
Otherwise, the quality is the same as the first season in all other aspects, it's just that the story itself isn't in any way significant to the plot.
It's a very interesting watch if you're interested in seeing more of the side characters of the show, since Souma himself barely appears in these two episodes (in the
...
first one he only appears for a minute at the end).
Turns out the fat Aldini brother is a huge weeb. The first OVA gives us some more backstory and character development for the Aldini's in general. I like the two characters. I think it's funny how he wants desperately to be the shounen rival character but is clearly playing second Piccolo to Erina's Vegeta, and how his brother is just there to laugh at him. The dynamic changes a bit when he's not in fat mode and the show treats him like less of a joke, but none of that's on display here.
The second episode is just your standard OVA fare with a water park

and all the female characters showing off their swimsuits. Not a whole lot of character development there. I'd rate it a 7/10, pretty average

The subreddit to discuss Shokugeki no Soma (aka Food Wars; 食戟のソーマ), a manga currently being serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump.
The raw was finally fansubbed but the subs aren't that great actually the subs are fabulous, if you pause at some bits they give TN and background history though other parts are really casual
I can't say which website it was on though I can PM if people wish but really a simple google search should do

That was a pretty good episode in all, the subs made it better with the slang translations

They aren't really Joke subs, the subs are pretty good though joke TN's appear for a couple of frames so you only read it if you pause
