Over the course of its lifetime, the Overwatch League has put all of the world’s finest orgs and players under the spotlight, but name undeniably stands out against all others when a new season gets underway: San Francisco Shock. The NA side have romped to two wins in 2019 and 2020, making them the most successful side to date, and becoming the face of the game’s continued growth. Here’s everything you need to know about the Shock, Overwatch’s winningest side.
San Francisco Shock represent the San Francisco area of Northern California, competing in the Western Division in the Overwatch League since its founding in 2018. The franchise is owned by Andy Miller, the co-owner of the esports brand NRG and also co-owner of fellow California-based NBA side, Sacramento Kings.
According to reports, the California-based franchise spot in the league cost Miller and his partners a whopping $20 million in total, a staggering sum for an Esport that is still yet to beat out competition from other titles and remains relatively unproven in the industry. Nevertheless, NRG Esports can still point to having some pretty heavy hitting investors behind them, with the likes of Shaquille O’Neal, Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Howard and Michael Strahan all putting their money into the org.
At the time of writing, San Francisco Shock’s active roster in the Overwatch League currently consists of the following players:
Damage : Namju “Striker” Gwon, Charlie “Nero” Zwarg, Gilseong “Glister” Lim and Sean Taiyo “Ta1yo” Henderson
Tank : Matthew “Super” Delisi, Hyobin “ChoiHyobin” Choi and Myeong Hwan-Yoo “Smurf”
Support : Minki “Viol2t” Park, Juseok “Twilight” Lee and Brice “FDGod” Monscavoir.
Chris “Thugnasty” Chung is the team’s general manager. Park “Crusty” Dae-hee was appointed as the team’s head coach in 2018, and he’s played a huge part in transforming the Shock into the dominant force Overwatch fans are familiar with today.
The team’s colours are black, grey and red. They plann to compete in their home arenas at Zellerbach Hall and San Jose Civic.
According to Miller , the org “took great care to choose a logo and identity that would both represent the attributes and traditions of San Francisco, yet at the same time speak to the future of sports and the Shock’s ambitions to take its place as a fixture next to the Bay Area’s championship sports teams.“
And it is this sense of energy and power that is palpable in the way the Shock play in the server that has seen them rise to the top of the Overwatch League over the past couple of seasons.
The side have perhaps the best Tank and DPS players in the world currently in ChoiHyobin and Striker, with both players stepping up and delivering countless times in the high-stakes clutch scenarios, with both players bagging themselves Grand Finals MVP awards in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
In fact, the Tank line of in-game leader Super, Smurf and ChoiHyoBin is perhaps the best the Overwatch League has ever since over the course of its history, and has formed the bedrock of the team’s successes over the past two seasons. Over the course of the previous two seasons, San Francisco Shock only lost 8 games in total; given the fact that they lost 23 in 2018 alone, it marks a seriously impressive turnaround for the NA org.
Stability in any esport title is usually a good indicator that things are well in the server, and San Francisco Shock enter the 2021 season as one of the most settled teams in the entire league. With $4.35 million in winnings from the past two league triumphs, the Shock are the side that every other org measures themselves up against. They have, and will always remain, engraved in the history of the Overwatch League as the first team with an era named after them, and there’s nothing to suggest Super, Striker and co. will drop off anytime soon.
