Just rent a stick welder and use a 6011 rod and call it a day But If you're dead set on using a mig welder what size wire are you using? Are you using gas? What are your settings at (voltage and wire speed). Is your polarity correct? How thick is the plate you're trying to weld? Do you know what type of metal the base plate is?
When I see welders walking the cup they are burning wire but moreso laying it than pounding it. Pounding wire cools your puddle down and it's probably a bad idea 75% of the time but it's fun to say and fun to do if you ask me.

It's ok to say no I've never done that or I don't know how but I can learn. What's not ok is throwing a weld down after bragging you the best welder been doing this shit for years and your weld looks like fucking mashed potatoes slung at a brick wall running 100mph.
Welding is one of those jobs you can quit and leave on lunchtime, and have another job by the end of the day. Pack your tools and find a shop that doesn't treat you like shit, they're out there.
Use anti-spatter. Ask other guys in the shop for suggestions on machine settings or techniques if you're gobbing all over the fucking place. Own YOUR own scrapers and don't let them walk away. Don't send out shit covered in spatter and scorch marks and say it's good enough, take pride in your job and get good.

I do a lot of maintenance welding, fixing broken shit on machines. After doing a repair, I often tell the person putting the machine back together, " Make sure that weld is dry before you put this machine back in service."

I just got out of welding being a shop welder in Indiana doesn't pay shit, welders out in the field make decent money and union welders can make good money but the most I've made is 35,000 now I'm in management making better money and when I'm done in school for IT I'll make even more. Plus I don't miss welding in 90+ degree heat!

I make exhaust for a living and this is not as bad as people that love to say welding is easy.... but still shit.
The other shit ones were done with Arosta 316L, since those are what the site provides. The actual technique does not change; stainless just requires you to be more extreme with your rod movements and angles, also way more patient.

Honestly in my first welding gig the more I tried to stick up for myself the more they tore me down. I didn't know shit and they can tell. Gruff old welders are seriously hard to square up to. I quit within a year and took all the shit I learned not to do to better places. I feel like it is typical for the industry at lower levels.
One flipped his shit because I brought up that the plant's rules say no repairs to extension cords and he had tape on his. I had brought over a replacement for him to borrow. It caused a hissy fit with yelling, screaming, threatening me, the project manager who was right there, and a random hand.

Edit: Im glad most people agree with my comment, just wanted to give a word of advice to the new welders, and this applies to the real world as well as the internet. If you come to a job talking shit, acting like you have any clue what you're doing, or that you're better than the typical new guy, you may find your reception a bit less than warm.
not sure where you work, but guys aren't too happy about having their shit fucked with, tools, welders, etc. bunch of fucking thieves everywhere, so I'm on edge about shit like that.

What is the fabrication shop fabricating and what skill sets are required? Structural welder get paid less than pipe/tube welders. Are they welding on ASME/API critical items, nuclear applications, oil & gas, or simply tack-welding and fabricating furniture? What area of the country do you live in?

Good welders, that know they are good, generally don't stick around in little shops tack welding shit and join unions where they are making better money in things like pipefitting.

I'm still welding, but I'll tell you what I did to not hate it anymore. Find welding work at a utility or a utility contractor. They are big on health and safety and pay well. Things slow down in the off season gives me time with the fam, and I only spend about 25 to 50% of my day actually welding.
