Thanks to Broad City , we're all very well-versed in the art of "pegging." But did you know Jeremy had a right to be protective of his Shinjo? Turns out they're pretty hard to come by.
You may not know this, but it takes a village to create a killer sex scene. All week long—in celebration of the forthcoming Golden Globes and ELLE 's annual Women in TV issue —we'll be putting the women and men responsible for prime time's most sizzling moments in the hot seat. From the actors (hello, Scandal 's Tony Goldwyn !) to the costumers to the prop stylists (yoo-hoo, sex toy specialist on Broad City !), we're getting up close and personal. This is Masters of On-Screen Sex.
Next up: boutique television's most sexually liberated, dynamic duo. Last season, Broad City made waves with its "pegging" episode , which introduced the world to a sex act involving a strap-on appendage. In the episode, Abbi, played by Abbi Jacobson, is asked to perform the act on her crush, Jeremy, who owns a very high-end green dildo called a Shinjo, which Abbi eventually ruins in the dishwasher. Though Jacobson and her costar/co-creator, Ilana Glazer, have discussed the now-infamous episode at length, we wanted to hear the nitty-gritty specifics from the show's prop master. Here, Tim Linden recounts how he created and sourced the almighty Shinjo.
"There's a pretty clear line of interpretation in terms of what Abbi and Ilana are looking for from the show's props. I think that probably comes from being of a similar age to them and living in Brooklyn. The scripts are so well-written and having put enough things in front of them, I kind of understand their tastes. For the second season I would get the scripts and shop them out and show them everything–we'd call it 'Show and Tell.' It's such a prop-heavy show that you have to be on a good wavelength with them.
There's definitely a dildo bin in the Broad City prop kit. What we need is usually so specific that it's usually hard to have one [single] source to go through. Usually we have to look at everything and try to find something that meets the parameters. My email is now spammed out from sex-toy stores I've had to buy things or request things from. You would think I was a freak from the junk email I get based on what I have to shop for for the show. And do things make their way out of the sex toy bin and into various practical jokes? All the time.
The Shinjo was probably the trickiest prop we had to deal with all last season. With sexual objects like that there are a lot of network considerations as far what we could show and what we couldn't. It's not allowed [for a sex toy] to appear anatomical or be at all flesh-colored, per Comedy Central. If you know anything about sex toys, dildos are often both of those things. They're often molded. You really have to start looking at butt plugs to get into weird shapes and a butt plug that big is really, really big. It was a weird hole to go down.
The second consideration was logistics. Does it actually fit all of the beats that are written in the scene? Because the girls are amazing and the physical humor is right there in the script. So is it big enough that it can get caught in the door? Will it hang in between her legs when they do the shot from The Graduate ? Will it warp, or can we make one that's warped when she puts it in the dishwasher? We had to make sure whatever we were bringing in could actually do all those logistic beats.
The last consideration we took was, Does it look the part? They made up the name–Shinjo – and that it's made from an organic mold and a handmade Japanese dildo. It was a talked-about prop. So, creatively, there was the consideration of whether it looked like something that could be made custom and that her love interest would obsess over.
We knew about it really early on, and we started looking into it really early on. But by the time we settled and got something on camera, it was probably about four weeks' worth of work. It was a long process. We were waiting to hear back from the network. We were waiting to hear back from fabricators. We were showing images to the girls. There were a lot of hoops to jump through on that one. With our time restraints, we wound up going through a guy on Etsy. And then the color had to be changed.
It's a hilarious scene. It's so infamous. And I was happy they were happy. The fake Shinjo, the one that Abbi buys to replace the one she ruins, definitely later ended up on the wall as a practical joke. It's such a classic: the ol' hang your coat on the dick."
