This train line uses retired Narita Express carriages, which once carried travelers between Narita International Airport and Tokyo. The town pays its respects to the celebrated artist with the Hokusai Museum and many points of interests to fill the creative soul. Obuse is a major production area for sweet chestnuts, within a prefecture that is already known for its excellent rice, buckwheat and sake, so you are sure to find plenty of tempting treats. Keep an eye out for this sign all over town, invitations to explore private gardens. The garden-loving owners keep them well-maintained in order to share the beauty of Japanese gardens with visitors. Be sure to stop by Kanten Papa , a shop dedicated to agar, a plant-based and vegan gelatin substance. Agar is rich in healthy fiber, and has been used in Japanese cuisine since the Edo period — in many desserts and even some savory dishes. No visit to Obuse is complete without savoring some of the locally grown chestnuts. The movie theater is said to be the oldest in Japan and has been operating for over one hundred years! This massive temple also offers lodgings for visitors interested in temple stays, a uniquely Japanese experience. So many of you here know Japan so well like the back of their hands. In fact, writing this post feels like telling the chef how to cook. If you guys find anything in my posts that is wrong or have any comment please correct me. You can save some money on this. I booked my ticket with Royal Brunei because it was the cheapest. The down side though is that the layover in Brunei on the way to Tokyo is seven hours and the airport is very small. Only a few shops and cafe. Airport Free wifi only gives one hour per day, which is outrageous. Airlines check Vaccination certificate at check-in so make sure you have it. I flew into Narita early in the morning via Brunei and we seemed to be the only flight. Nagano is the most appropriate base for this mission since I have to consider travelling to Hakuba later on. From Nagano there is a direct shuttle to Shoga Kogen, while Nozawa Onzen and Madarao can be reached by train to Iiyama station then shuttle bus to each resort. Shuttle buses are mostly cash only so make sure you have enough. Price is one way. I find that using the Non-reserved seat is the most convenient way on Shinkansen. No need to reserve in advance - just go there and walk to Non-reserved car and hop on. Skis and snowboards can be carried on the trains and shuttle busses without bags. I was worried at first but turned out fine. Large bags can be stored at the end of the carriage. Skis and snowboard bags can go on the overhead rack. Adding Suica card to my Apple Wallet makes payments much easier. It can be used at most places. If you can remember I once asked about buying ski too long. I looked up and found info that if I put the binding forward it will help. I tried and it seems to help. Still, the length of the tail of my ski is very noticeable after every turn. Now, time to comment on each resort. Last edited: Jan 30, Nozawa Onsen I started my ski trip at Nozawa Onsen. I took Shinkansen from Nagano to Iiyama which took only 12 minutes then took the shuttle bus from Bus Stop Buy the return ticket at Nozawa Onsen Chou Terminl locker room. The shuttle terminates at Nozawa Onsen Chou Terminal, which makes it easy to those like me who are not sure where to get off. This is where the first bad surprise happened. Once getting off there was nothing there. I expected the bus to terminate at the ticket office like they do in Australia which makes sense. But no. I needed to take the village bus to the main terminal. But once there buying ticket was easy. This is very good I think because the day trippers can use it once and throw away. Lift queue was mostly nonexistent except at the main gondola where it could take a couple of minutes or three - oh the horror!!! However, I noticed that no matter how many people are in the queue the lifties never ordered people to fill up the lift or gondola- the way they do in Australia. People also seemed to not want to ride the lift with strangers. The only people I rode the lifts with were Aussies and Kiwis. Not a single Japanese. Lifties brush snow of the seats!!! Very nice. Saved my butt from being wet. The Yamabiko red area was nice. I liked it. Stayed there for a while until the fog came in so I left. The Skyline run is nice and long. I liked it a lot. However, I made a mistake at the end of the run, thinking I could tackle the black run down to the side lift. It was so hard to get back up to retrieve skis and put them on because of soft snow. Never experienced this in Australia. The black runs at Kandahar were hard, but I managed to arrive at the bottom in one piece. I supposed they were groomed because they were not fluffy. That made it quite a bit easier for me. I tried again on another ungroomed black run Utopia and the same failure happened so I gave up and stayed around green and red. Their green runs through the tree are quite narrow. They can be quite steep for green at places too. Though, the middle section is so flat many snowboarders have to walk One thing I like is they have many large trail maps across the resort so you can look it up easily without having to take out the paper. Come to think of it, I like the way Thredbo does it. Large and clear. This time I had to stop often because my legs were so sore and would get a cramp if I pushed and not stopping. If arriving at Narita the buses direct to Tokyo train station may be the best option if catching the train from there. There is free wifi on the trains as well as at JR stations. There are power points low on the back of the seats as well as on the wall Highway buses are on option to Nagano especially if arriving in Japan late at night. They are a lot cheaper than the train. There was a small sign saying that I had to walk m to a restaurant called Heidi to buy a ticket. What are they gonna do? This ticket office building is at the lowest point of the valley, meaning from there to every freaking lifts you must walk up hill to reach them. Not only that. When they built their link runs they must have hated skiers so much, even more so for snowboarders, because they made so many unnecessary dips that riders have to walk up. Almost every single unload station requires walking up. There are gazillion tons of snow laying around. Now I understand what my friend meant when he said I have to be fit to ski in Japan They have the cutest lift I have ever seen - single chairlift. There is no safety bar or rope. The way people held on to the pole beside them when it swung back and forth after an unexpected stop was fun to watch. From the top there is no green run down the mountain, only a blue red cat track. I waited for other people to lead and follow them. However, after the first turn I stopped to take photo for 20 seconds when I looked back they were all gone. I continued alone and somehow missed the correct turn and ended up near the top of that black run I so dreaded. Looking down, those people had arrived at the bottom and I had no idea where they turned. I had no choice but to try and go down. I must say I was so proud of myself that I got down to the bottom in one piece. It was the first time I rode a chairlift with bubble. On the one hand I liked it that it kept mr from the elements. Watching people and things go by while riding chairlift is the joy I have to kill time. With the bubble I was deprived. Oh I once pushed it up to take a photo then tried to pull it back down. I had to endure snow and light wind for the rest of the trip Signage here is even worse than Nozawa Onsen. They really need to improve it for the sake of newcomers. I removed my laptop power cord to put something else in then forgot to put it back so now my laptop is out of battery. I have to write everything on my phone so it get mixed up easily. Right next to the ticket office is the link gondola that has the strangest gondola car layout I have ever seen. Instead of going one by one they stack three of them at a time. The gondola drop you off at the base of Giant ski area. Positive side is they are all linked by lifts so getting around is easy enough. There is also free shuttle bus, but who in their right minds want to ride a bus when they can ride lifts? I had a mission to visit as many ski areas as possible within the limited time, but I could only manage to ski the main runs once each at these 9 areas: Giant, Nishidateyama, Happo Bunadaira, Tagamagahara, Hagashidateyama, Ichinose Family, Ichinose Yamanogami, Yakebitaiyama, and Okushigakogen. Shiga kegen is the worst so far in this regard. Many lift loading stations are also up hill. The green forest run from Higashidateyama has many flat bits that I felt sorry for those unsuspecting snowboarders who had to walk many times. I know that did that to make it easier to get down of the steep bits, but why here across the whole run? Why not on the side? On the other side of the coin, the green forest run at Okushigakogen is really steep and winding. I was surprised they had high-speed double chair. Snow condition was perfect at all locations, although I was baffled that snow became sticky rather than faster on the new snow spots. By the time I reached the bottom of Okushigaoogen it was almost 3pm. There was no time to get back to the bus station so I just came back to Yakebitaiyama area and stayed there until 3. I met so many groups of Thai tourists here more like heard them talking in Thai. On one hand I wanted to say hello in hope that they may invite me to join them, as skiing alone is kinda lonely as a beginner-ish. Someone to talk with to kill time on the lifts. Someone to laugh together when I or they face plant. In all, I had a great time at Shiga Kogen. I wish I had more time to explore. At least seven days and stay at the resort would be perfect. My hotel is within walking distance from Happo Bus Terminal so it was easy for me. I went to the bus terminal the next day thinking I could find out all the information I needed and buy the valley pass there if I decided to. Not that simple. Just as finding information about other things in Japan, they have different mindset. The way they present the information makes sense to them but for us new tourists it is very confusing. There is also no brochure for information about lift prices that I can compare. The websites are hard to navigate as well. The saving grace is that the big Hakuba map has shuttle bus timetables on the back. I would have thought that since they promote Hakuba as one big place they would consolidate things together and make it a one stop shop. Alas, no. It would make sense if they did because this is the place where most people arrive. Each resort also seems to do their own things with no standardisation. I ended up walking to Happo Gondola to find out more about the pass. Snow wise, it had been snowing when I arrived so the snow quality have been very good except late in the afternoon of Mon 5, after two sunny days, that the snow turned Aussie style - sugary and icy at steeper slopes.
