This new edition has been entirely retranslated for the first time since its original 1910 English publication. It also includes two new Lupin vs. Holmes short stories, Arsène Lupin Arrives Too Late and The Unkindest Cut (written by J.-M. & Randy Lofficier) and a complete chronology of all the Holmes-Lupin adventures.

What a crossover between Iconic Characters should be
First and foremost this is about Sherlock Holmes trying to capture Arsene Lupin. It will certainly not disappoint in that regard. To people who may have got The Hollow Needle first and felt disappointed that in the main novel Holmes doesn't show up till late in it, this one will not be the same, he is a constant presence in the narrative, only the first couple of chapters lack his presence. As others have said they prove to be worthy adversaries with a mutual respect for each other. The original writer of the two Novells collected here is the original creator of Lupin, and these were among his earliest Lupin stories, written following the original 9 short stories collected in Gentleman Burgler, and before his most Iconic Epic adventures. So there is no question that Lupin is depicted accurately, these were part of what defined him to begin with. How Holmes is depicted is worth analyzing. Modern readers that are used to variations on Holmes basic personality should accept this easily. But for the desire to see it as actually fitting into the Doyle Canon, that's iffy. In Doyle's Canon's Holmes retires the year before this narrative opens (though that may not has been established at the time Leblanc wrote this) the new stories from the Translators acknowledge this fact, but the original Leblanc clearly seemed unaware of it. But that's a trivial issue. Mostly what seems odd to me is Holmes carrying and using a Gun (Watson had the Gun in Doyle's stories) and how Watson is used is odd, he is mostly benched frequently so Holmes has to team up mainly with Ganimard. As for two original stories form Jean-Mark and Randy Lofficer. The first "Arsene Lupin arrives to late" is very good, with one drawback I'll mention later. The other, "The Unkindest Cut", I didn't like. But it's the shortest story in the volume, only 2 and a half pages, so has minimal impact on the overall quality. The main reason I'll mention later, but the smaller reason is that even though it's set before the Hollow Needle it kinda spoils the ending of The Hollow Needle, the only thing really that reflects how this volume was written second when it should have been done first. A Spoiler I already knew because I'm a nerd who looks for spoilers online. But others who wanted to read the two volumes as a chronological sequence might be bugged by it. The Afterward provides some interesting history of Holmes Lupin crossovers (this must have been written before the recent Video Game however), and a timeline of the events relevant to this volume and the Hollow Needle. I unlike most bought this mainly for my curiosity over the third title character, who in the original French is refereed to as "La Dame Blonde" and in the older English Translation, The Blonde Lady. My desire to be pleasantly surprised by female characters in old literature (which I have been plenty) had me get my hopes up that this character would be something like a precursor to the Timely Comics Blonde Phantom or the Domino Lady. She wasn't, but still she and the main female lead of The Jewish Lamp were well written characters, for being written over 100 years ago Lebanc did pretty well, not as well as Paul Feval though. You would think the new stories by modern writers, a Husband and Wife team in fact, would do better by it's female characters. But if anything comparatively they did worse, by what I look for at least. In "Arsene Lupin arrives to late", the female lead is effectively a Damsel in Distress, that doesn't hurt how I view the story any really. That the Unkindest Cut decides to mention Irene Adler, but not actually depict her, merely to further create hostility between Holmes and Lupin really bothers me however. Well every criticism I have of this Volume I have mentioned or at least alluded to. But I did not even scratch the surface of what I enjoyed. So I highly recommend you buy this book, and many others from Black Coat Press.
